Our family restores old statues. Watch and learn how to do it yourself too! We repair and restore statues from across Canada and the US. Our videos document the restoration of various statues - some of them shattered into nearly 100 pieces. Some fairly new, but most a century old. From churches, to private possessions, to the National Shrine at Cap de Madeleine in Quebec Canada, our passion is the restoration of statues and sacramentals which help foster Christian prayer.
Contrary to the misconception, Catholics do not ever worship statues. They are forbidden from worshipping anyone but God.

@@JohnLovesMary actually this statue was made in Italy and as you can see at the :20 mark, it is embossed “Filomena.” That’s her name in Italian. 😊 We hope you enjoyed the short video. We invite you to watch the full restoration video too! God bless!
I just used polyfilla ready mix as i had a corner chuck missing on the base at the back of my plaster statue then sanded and used cheap vinyl paint from hobbycraft shop it looked perfect and cost about 6 pound (u.k) . Proper job 😂
If it works, it works!
Nice job! What is the pink paste you used, please?
Thanks Fernanda! We only use the pink plaster for small surface areas, or specific areas that are not under natural stress. (For example we would never use it to sculpt a finger). IT is called "DryDex" and the pink turns to bright white when it is fully dried. It's a simple house plaster. For thicker applications or where greater strength is needed, we usually use HydroCal plaster. I hope this helps!
@@BrushworksStatueRestoration It helped a lot! Thank you very much! Your channel is excellent, I loved finding it!
Oh my goodness, Beautiful work. Team Brushworks, you inspire me. In fact, you recently helped me with guidance on restoring Our Lady of Lourdes that had no hands. Your professional advice took me to another level of finishing a beautiful piece I did not know I could accomplish. Well, I am a firm believer that God gives you small jobs to break you in, and when you succeed, He gives you bigger jobs. So now, I am challenged with restoring a 49” St. Joseph with Baby Jesus in his arms. The world is missing the cross. The paint is shedding as I type. I brought him from the church and am letting him acclimate to my home temperature. I already vacuumed the surface dust off. My question is, do I wash their faces to remove the years of dust that have darken their skin tones? I plan to preserve the original faces since they look in good shape. How about washing the rest of the figure to remove the dust before I start removing the loose paint with a soft paint brush, soft dry sponge? I have not used sandpaper on him nor have I started patching him up. Both figures have beautiful glass eyes that I need to protect. Any ideas how to do that?. The hands and baby’s feet have a few chips, but that may be an easy match. Most important St. Joseph is missing his staff. I do have the three lilies needing restoration with a piercing nail at the end, which should go into a 1/2” dowel. I need to repair the lilies and leaves that are broken off. Any ideas on how to tackle that repair? Also, I used the product Clear Gesso by Liquitex on Our Lady of Lourdes and on a plastic restoration of St. Therese. The product worked beautifully. I was able to see the original colors under the Gesso and the finished pieces came out exceptional. Again, thank you for sharing your professional restoration advice with me. All is done for the Greater Glory of God to remind us of His faithful servants that served Him well. Respectfully, Margie
❤❤❤
Incredible work!!! 🤯 Well done!!!
For the fingers, does the “Epoxy Sculpt” have a brand? I need to repair fingers on an Infant of Prague and have no idea what to use.
Hello Chris-Alia. Apoxie Sculpt is the product name, and it is made by a company in Wisconsin called AVES. I'm not sure where you're from, but in Canada, it can be ordered through the Michaels chain, or from "Sculpture Supply Canada" in the Toronto area. If you're not in Canada, check out their website at avesstudio.com/shop/apoxie-sculpt/ . I hope this helps, and Good luck with your restoration project!

I have a 2ft plaster crucifix that was damaged in a fire and broken in early 1900s. It was brought up from the church basement and I was asked to repair it if able. The paint was flaking and tested positive for lead. Do you have any recommendations and methods of safety for removing the paint? Any special primer to use to cover it? (You were so gracious to answer my questions before. Thank you for your shared knowledge! )
Hello Melissa. When working with leaded paint, it's important to take proper precautions - particularly avoiding exposure to lead dust by young children. When we work with old statues that test positive for lead, I wear protective clothing (disposable cover-alls and gloves), wear gloves and a proper respirator (you should do better than the standard n95 particulate masks) and I make sure the seal around my face is air tight. A respirator is a mask that you can buy at Home Depot and it has TWO filter cans that stick out the front. This is one example but be sure that whatever you use clearly states that it will filter lead dust ( www.homedepot.ca/product/workhorse-dual-cartridge-half-mask-p100-asbestos-lead-respirator/1001104518 ). We find it is better to avoid sanding if possible, and gently reduce any peel edges with a light sandpaper (ie 400 grit) and once reduced, you can use a thick bonding primer such as Zinsser Peel-stop Plus, made by Rust-oleum. That goes on like a gel and dries almost like a thin rubber coat so it hides the old paint chip lines. It is definitely better to COVER and seal off old leaded paint than it is to sand it off and let the toxic dust float around or settle on things nearby. So a good bonding primer and then a premium paint should work for you. We can only provide general information here as we don't know your specific project details. We urge you to do some reading about safely removing or dealing with leaded paint before you delve into the actual work. It'll help you do it right, and give you peace of mind so you don't have to worry about exposure. I hope this helps! - steve
@@BrushworksStatueRestoration Thank you Steve for your quick response and generous advice! I'm very beginner at restoration, but a decent artist. We haven't handled this piece well so far, but are making new precautions from here forward. I had vacuumed up everything that was coming loose with a hepa filter vacuum. My husband, a carpenter, has the proper mask, which I'll now use. ✔️ I'll look for that paint! God bless you! - Melissa
A beautiful job. My husband and I restored a similar statue almost 5 ft tall that had been left out in the rain and had big holes throughout. It came up beautiful. St Therese pray for us.

Exactly
The Immaculate Conception don't used veil
Yes we know. If you read the captions, or listen to the explanation you will understand. There is some lack of clarity of whether this depicts the Immaculate Conception (Murillo) (scotland.op.org/murillos-assumption-of-the-blessed-virgin-mary/) or the Annunciation ( www.stuflesser.com/en/statues/our-lady-of-the-assumption/ ) . There are various artistic depictions of the Annunciation, of course. Some (like the painting by Jacopo Tintoretto at Scuola Grande di San Rocco, Venice, Italy) do depict the Virgin wearing a veil. Another is at Museum of the Convent of St. John the Baptist, Müstair, Switzerland. And still another is by Paolo Veneziano from 1838. (At the Getty Centre) So your point is well taken for the painting upon which this statue was likely based, but since our research suggested the addition of a veil was not an affront or disrespectful to Our Lady, we chose to proceed with this project, and another similar project for Our Lady of the Assumption church in Canada.

Do you have any suggestions for sculpting and patching antique outside marble statues? The statues I'm working on are about 100 years old and at one time had been vandalized and arms and fingers are broken. They sit on a missionary site in Wisconsin. Thanks again for your help. Gail Smith
Hello: You said the statue is resin. I want to know what kind of paints did you use?
Hello ! This particular statue is plaster, not resin. But for indoor statues we most commonly use Zinsser primer then Behr premium paints in a matte sheen. For the more delicate areas such as skin tones and hand stencilling Pauline blends her own custom colours using professional grade acrylics such as Liquitex. I hope this answers your question. 🙏
That was fascinating ti watch! Thanks for sharing your skills!
I was wondering why you did not use pegs in her larger part of her torso along with the epoxy glue ... Beautiful job ...
The plaster around the torso breakage was not thick enough to implant sculpting wire or a dowel. Those options are good when dealing with two thick pieces such as a wrist, or neck, arms etc. Still, we felt that the length of the bonded joint was quite long and applying the epoxy PLUS plaster cloth would make it sufficiently strong without throwing off the centre of gravity by adding too much weight higher up. Hope this answers your question, and thank you for the compliment !
Your work is beautiful! Woukd you mind telling me what paint you use, I purchased an old chalkware nativity set and it needs touch up. Thanks
We use Zinsser primer and Behr premium latex paints for outdoor statues. For indoor statues we use Behr and a blend of custom-mixed acrylic paints. Usually Liquitex. Hope this helps! As for skin tones, they are fairly complex based on the statue and its positioning and expected lighting. In the near future, we hope to produce a short series of “how to “videos. In one of those I will ask Pauline to speak specifically to skin tones and how to blend them.

I am just learning about proper restoration, and was wondering what your favorite paint brand is? What colors do you choose to blend for skintones? Thank you!

Thank you Tim! That's very kind of you. We hope to post a couple new videos in the next couple of weeks.
Beautuful work !!! Can i ask, do you use acrylic paints ?
Normally we use Zinsser Bullseye primer, then Behr Premium paint. But for specialty areas such as faces, skin tones and flowers Pauline custom blends acrylic paints. Her preferred brand is Liquitex but it must be the professional grade (avoid using student or learner grade paints). Hope this helps! God bless!
Momma Mary pray for me.
I’m glad I’m watching I now remember a lot more now thanks . My problem is what I can do to take so many paint coats off the last person put the paint on and there are drips all over her on hands Face everywhere
Trying to remove multiple layers of paint is one of the great challenges of restoration. You can go to a specialty paint store and ask about nontoxic and non-abrasive natural paint thinners or removers. But beware that this requires a huge amount of time and effort to get done right. You may find that the easiest option and the most effective one is to gently sand off any paint drips with a very high grit sandpaper so you’re not taking off too much or damaging the plate itself. Once you’ve done that you can apply a light coat of primer and then try to repaint the area if you’ve been able to smooth out the area such as fingers or hands or wrists, etc. I hope this helps and good luck!
