Thanks Fernanda! We only use the pink plaster for small surface areas, or specific areas that are not under natural stress. (For example we would never use it to sculpt a finger). IT is called "DryDex" and the pink turns to bright white when it is fully dried. It's a simple house plaster. For thicker applications or where greater strength is needed, we usually use HydroCal plaster. I hope this helps!

Hello Melissa. When working with leaded paint, it's important to take proper precautions - particularly avoiding exposure to lead dust by young children. When we work with old statues that test positive for lead, I wear protective clothing (disposable cover-alls and gloves), wear gloves and a proper respirator (you should do better than the standard n95 particulate masks) and I make sure the seal around my face is air tight. A respirator is a mask that you can buy at Home Depot and it has TWO filter cans that stick out the front. This is one example but be sure that whatever you use clearly states that it will filter lead dust ( www.homedepot.ca/product/workhorse-dual-cartridge-half-mask-p100-asbestos-lead-respirator/1001104518 ). We find it is better to avoid sanding if possible, and gently reduce any peel edges with a light sandpaper (ie 400 grit) and once reduced, you can use a thick bonding primer such as Zinsser Peel-stop Plus, made by Rust-oleum. That goes on like a gel and dries almost like a thin rubber coat so it hides the old paint chip lines. It is definitely better to COVER and seal off old leaded paint than it is to sand it off and let the toxic dust float around or settle on things nearby. So a good bonding primer and then a premium paint should work for you. We can only provide general information here as we don't know your specific project details. We urge you to do some reading about safely removing or dealing with leaded paint before you delve into the actual work. It'll help you do it right, and give you peace of mind so you don't have to worry about exposure. I hope this helps! - steve

We haven't handled this piece well so far, but are making new precautions from here forward. I had vacuumed up everything that was coming loose with a hepa filter vacuum. Yes we know. If you read the captions, or listen to the explanation you will understand. There is some lack of clarity of whether this depicts the Immaculate Conception (Murillo) (scotland.op.org/murillos-assumption-of-the-blessed-virgin-mary/) or the Annunciation ( www.stuflesser.com/en/statues/our-lady-of-the-assumption/ ) . There are various artistic depictions of the Annunciation, of course. Some (like the painting by Jacopo Tintoretto at Scuola Grande di San Rocco, Venice, Italy) do depict the Virgin wearing a veil. Another is at Museum of the Convent of St. John the Baptist, Müstair, Switzerland. And still another is by Paolo Veneziano from 1838. (At the Getty Centre) So your point is well taken for the painting upon which this statue was likely based, but since our research suggested the addition of a veil was not an affront or disrespectful to Our Lady, we chose to proceed with this project, and another similar project for Our Lady of the Assumption church in Canada.

Hello ! This particular statue is plaster, not resin. But for indoor statues we most commonly use Zinsser primer then Behr premium paints in a matte sheen. For the more delicate areas such as skin tones and hand stencilling Pauline blends her own custom colours using professional grade acrylics such as Liquitex. I hope this answers your question. 🙏

The plaster around the torso breakage was not thick enough to implant sculpting wire or a dowel. Those options are good when dealing with two thick pieces such as a wrist, or neck, arms etc. Still, we felt that the length of the bonded joint was quite long and applying the epoxy PLUS plaster cloth would make it sufficiently strong without throwing off the centre of gravity by adding too much weight higher up. Hope this answers your question, and thank you for the compliment !

Normally we use Zinsser Bullseye primer, then Behr Premium paint. But for specialty areas such as faces, skin tones and flowers Pauline custom blends acrylic paints. Her preferred brand is Liquitex but it must be the professional grade (avoid using student or learner grade paints). Hope this helps! God bless!

Trying to remove multiple layers of paint is one of the great challenges of restoration. You can go to a specialty paint store and ask about nontoxic and non-abrasive natural paint thinners or removers. But beware that this requires a huge amount of time and effort to get done right. You may find that the easiest option and the most effective one is to gently sand off any paint drips with a very high grit sandpaper so you’re not taking off too much or damaging the plate itself. Once you’ve done that you can apply a light coat of primer and then try to repaint the area if you’ve been able to smooth out the area such as fingers or hands or wrists, etc. I hope this helps and good luck!
