Idea to Image: Planning and Blocking
This video opens with a discussion of getting from your idea to your image, using sketching techniques (blind and semi-blind contour) and the value of a study. I go over methods of enlarging the study and using sightlines within the composition to aid in layout. The video concludes with using the paintbrush as a sketching tool and application of the blocking technique to start the painting.
This is part of a series using the 'block/build/refine technique.' See phases 1, 2 & 3 for more on the development of this image.

Phase 1: Blocking technique for painting
Переглядів 7782 роки тому
This video talks about the initial phase of your painting using the the block, build, refine technique. See how to block in a drawing quickly so you have a foundation of color to respond to. This phase is the fastest and should take no longer than an hour. Note: Typically less time for blocking is needed once it is a familiar part of your practice - time also depends on the scale you are workin...

Slow down, use smaller brushes (I really like the filbert) and try out different blending techniques. Continue to bounce around the composition to establish visual harmony and an even level of finish. Take bre...
Phase 2: Building technique for painting

This video is a demonstration of the building technique, the second phase of the block, build, refine approach. It begins with a quick look at how I got from idea to image, using sketches and a small study. My demo painting is already blocked out - this is fast and loose, a gesture of what colors will appear and where things will 'live' in the picture plane. What you'll see in this video it bui...

    apply some carbon paper, and trace out the drawing with it. That works best as you get greater detail in the transfer

    I tried with a different wrap and it doesn't work to paint at least half of what you are able to do. Saran Wrap is not available in Europe and so I need to go to plexiglass probably. Thank you for this tutorial!

      I had better success using tube watercolor and very little water to activate. I recently learned that you can run your brush over a bar of soap and that will help the paint to stick when you’re making a monotype. frosted duralar is a good surface if you can get it. If you use plexi, you might also try lightly sanding it. I’m going to experiment more this semester! Good luck, glad you came across my video!

    Great tutorial - Just getting into the printing process. Have you tried using a rolling pin also instead of a spoon? Just wondering I will experiment with both. Wanted to share this. I recently did a print workshop and we worked on large presses and these mini presses which I just order. Search for "open press project'

      Hi Scott! I like the spoon because I can get more directed pressure in areas of the drawing. A rolling pin may work, but I think it will end up printing light. Let me know how it goes - I'll check out your project, thank you!

    Have you ever used this process on arches water color paper, can I use wax paper instead of tracing paper??I bought a roll of arches 10yds at xmas (which took a while to save up for that )lol so I dont feel guilty if I try a few new media watercolor aspects of art form and expanding my watercolor art. My art teacher ed cooper from UK was talking about how he started in the ink and printing process of art went to oil and such and now hes teaching watercolor so I was like yes maybe watercolor could be used somehow and I dont need to use ink. Also michele webber used ink for a drawing and painting ,there was also another art teacher who use india ink in a watercolor simple drawing anne kerr used ink and it inspired me to say hey I wonder🤔 if I could really use a watercolor media that would look like there ink process paintings , it's funny how watching a few of your teachers in one form of median and those teachers added some form of wc to do their median inspires your thought process and creativity and So I started looking on ytube to see if theres anyone in the art community who has thought thru this process with using watercolors....🥳🥳yeah thank you for this video.......before I had gotten my wcp I always wanted to try to see if there was many different forms of watercolor applications, I also like the India ink but I know it's a potential spill issue for me as I'm not very steady....this process you've taught us on this video seems very doable for me to achieve on a limited art budget....also it's a way to accomplish more paintings....thanks for any help from a older older beginning artist..🎨👩‍🎨pardon xbox orange guy daughter is a gamer and we share internet connection....

      The Arches paper will work well, the soaking time will vary depending on the weight of the paper. Do you know what lb it is? If it is 90 lb, try a 5 minute soak. Once you've printed on it, you may want to sandwich it with some interleaving (put a piece of copy paper over the image, a piece of cardboard and weight it down with a book). This will prevent it from buckling as it dries. You can also tape it once printed with pre-gummed paper tape and then continue to paint on top as you would with a typical watercolor. There are a lot of possibilities! As far as wax paper, I think the paint will buckle more because of the coating, but test it out. If you have sandpaper, try giving it a light scuff before you paint to give it something to hold on to.

      This process was born out of limited materials when Covid shut down our campus and my students were without their materials. I tried out lots of different things that I thought my students would have easy access to at home and could print by hand-I'm all about experimentation and mixing media, I hope you enjoy trying it out!

      Hi Dhruv, I printed on Stonehenge for the bird and got good results-just blot the paper well before printing. I also tried Masa for the moon print and got decent results, but don’t soak it as long since it is thinner paper. It’s all about experimentation, my students were using whatever they had available at the time.

    What is your inking slab made of? It looks like foil?

    • @rachaelmariebower
      @rachaelmariebower 3 роки тому

      Hi Lorraine! Yes, it’s just tin foil taped down on all sides. I made a bunch of these videos with limited household supplies when we first went remote, things I knew students would have on hand. Plus cleanup is easy, just toss when you’re done! Typically I use a plexi plate taped down to my work table so I can mix the ink with a palette knife, it cleans up easy with baby oil.

      You could definitely use acrylics for a monotype, but I wouldn't let it dry. The watercolor can dry on the surface since it reactivates with water.

    • @rachaelmariebower
      @rachaelmariebower 4 роки тому

      No varnish, I printed directly from the surface! The foil allowed the paint to release easily, the way a varnished surface would.

  • @digitalbrayer
    @digitalbrayer 4 роки тому

    It came out nicer than I thought it would, being as it was relief. . Thanks again - by the way did you just glue scrunched up tin foil onto a cardboard disc?

    • @rachaelmariebower
      @rachaelmariebower 4 роки тому

      Thanks! I was pleasantly surprised-yep, just wrinkled tin foil! It lends such a nice texture to break up the flats and you can achieve a lot of variety, since the surface smooths back down as you print more. Here you can see how the watercolor slightly fades when soaking the paper for a second layer.

    Are you using oil based ink for this process?

    • @rachaelmariebower
      @rachaelmariebower 4 роки тому

      Aine, yes, I used Speedball oil based ink (clean up with baby oil or vegetable oil). I tried with acrylic paint as well, but the first trace yielded a lot of plate tone. I was all ab out experimenting with these processes with my students due to remote working and a lot of them had good results with paint (though it took more trial and error). I found acrylic paint worked really well with the collagraph process I show in another video.

  • @digitalbrayer
    @digitalbrayer 4 роки тому

    thanks for sharing - yep its a shame about the blotting issue. Have you ever tried over printing a second watercolor layer onto a dried and re-soaked watercolor print?

    • @rachaelmariebower
      @rachaelmariebower 4 роки тому

      Yes, I tried it a few ways with varying results...I found that the watercolor had the tendency to lift off if soaked too long. Did a few tests and still was able to get a good impression with minimal fading of first layer with a quick dunk and very soft blot-think of it like a quick swipe, just enough to lift off the surface of water droplets without pressing into the paper too much. When I blotted with more pressure like I would with a regular sheet, it pulled off more of the first layer.
