The village sleeps again (look at life 1962)
It was never perfect. But people had a lot more of a moral compass than nowadays. Shame how things have turned out. Brighton born and bred, so l know.
My old home town until 1985, when I moved to California. Brighton is in my heart daily, I have lots of family there. Great to see the old footage of the town I grew up in. The best town in the country for fun and sun and everything else in between!
Am i missing something but people were dressed to kill and many more people less overweight and morso looked happier. 😢what has happened i can answer but i wont anyone that is clever can work it out very sad world now 😢
We want our town back! Remigration now
Wow... When Northampton "Market Square" still had a Market!
Some of these comments are a disgrace. Id like to think Northamptonians back then were not quite as ignorant and dumb as the ones commenting here.
Not full of foreigners
Why are all the people white 🤔
George Formby at the Windmill dates it to 1959.
No jihadi threats at christmas markets
🙄 Off to GBNews with ya.
K.
Footage is from the early 60's as I can see a Morris Mini and Ford Anglia, introduced in 1959.
Nice. ❤
Now Brighton Looks Like A Shit Hole .
This was the year my family moved to Lowestoft!
Mass imigration has destroyed this country and Britain culture
What a beautiful place before they ruined it
Happy days. Look at that bustling market.
doe's anyone remember the Curtain Club, with baby Jane on the door, I was on holiday from Bradford in Yorkshire my god what an eye opener I ended up staying for 16 years.....😎got a job driving trucks for PD Transport Shoreham and lived out in Moulscombe at the Highway.......what a time I had, thank you Roger and Brighton....
Great music!
Excellent old film, super interesting. Thanks for posting👍
I remember the stamp shop in Meeting House Lane.
Nice.❤
Looks clean. Happy and bright.. like most of the uk before being infected with hate and neglect.. better times. Im sad i was born 1985.. i only saw upto the 2000s before it started going downhill.. miss simpler times. Thanks for the vid
what are you talking about. Simpler times! Thatchers Britain - huge unemployed queues - destruction of Brighton's manufacturing Industry, homelessness, hence the Queenspark Book`s Brighton on the Rocks
Why no mention of football, cricket or ice hockey? or music venues?
Is clacton on sea?
Nice
Wow is a great video
Born and bred in Brighton (1957) Thanks for the memories..I remember the sceens you captured for the filming of the poignant musical"Oh What A Lovely War". Mostly filmed on the old West Pier which is showing the temporary movie sign saying "World War One". The pier is now sadly just a derelict skeleton in the sea. I now live just outside Brighton but hardly ever visit as sadly it,s gone downhill over the years
When Brighton was clean and quirky, and unique. Nowhere else like it ,Now a expensive dump.
Although we only lived in Brighton for a short time in 1962, my sister Heather & I had a lot of fun there. Sadly, we lost touch with the friends we made two by the name of Geraldine & Stephanie
My great grandfather was an engineer on Volks Electric Railway, shown here. It was very innovative at the time. He was once described as Magnus Volk's "right-hand man".
Compare those streets to today.. most front gardens gone, paved over for car parking, and the streets themselves, cars nose to tail, blocking footpaths.. Very few had cars back then. Now it’s at least 2 per household. These were the last few years..before ‘multiculturalism’ & ‘entitlement’ took over.. not for the better, sadly.
That was extraordinary. Like being dragged back through the door into a half forgotten world. All looks about 1969-70, and i remember as @ 9 year old, being really p'd off that West Pier was closed for filming OWALW during the summer hols! Outrageous! I must have been in one or two of those crowd scenes. Nowadays, whenever I have to go back to Brighton, i get a really strong urge to thoroughly wash my hands upon leaving.
OWALW was filmed in the summer of 1968. I was 13.
Pre-invasion England. Sad to look at now.
My home town family moved to london in the 50s but as a young lad in the 50s and 60s would spend some of my summer hlidays staying with my Aunt in Coombe road spending all day on front and piers spending my pennies and then catching the bus back .felt so safe .Unhappily when l go back its gone downhill
Brighton born and bred . What a lovely town( as it was called then) it was in the past especially in the 50's , 60's and 70's . Now in 2024 a pale shadow of it's former glory . Dirty , rundown , neglected and why people still decide to holiday here is a mystery to me . Thank God people of my generation can look back and remember how it once was .
Must be down to Labour and the Greens having no pride in the ‘city’. Born and bred here but never seen it as bad along with the state of Hove. Until Brighton and Hove were made a ‘city’, Hove was kept clean. Those were the days !
Rubbish most of the damage to the town was done in the 60s and 70s by philistine architects and planners
Our family moved to Stevenage in 1954 to 63 Broad water crescent opposite the roebuck shops ,well there wasn't any then lol.We loved Stevenage then
Interesting to spot Harding's fishmonger in the open market. I used to shop there in the 80s-90s. Probably long gone...?
Wow absolutely fantastic. Lived in sos till 1974. Terrible now. Such a shame. Thanks for putting this up great memories.
Mr uploader, if you put timestamps in the description it will add chapters to the video, people can click through to bits like: 00:00 - Place 1 02:15 - Place 2 etc etc
Wow! This was like finding a time machine! Although I wasn't around until the 80s I can recognise most of the places in this video. I remember that funny little boating pool used to have round "bumper boats" in my day, and not those traditional boats. I cannot work out where that area along the seafront is with all the flowers would have been. I remember the paddling pool though. That Post Office vending machine selling stamps, cards and envelopes seems like a good idea. Why don't they have those now? The Open Market is as I remember it, apart from that weird wall bit at the entrance. I used to HATE the fish bit in the middle and would always run through it, holding my breath. I am pretty sure one of the squares featured is Palmeira Square, technically in Hove, looking north towards the Floral Clock. "English's" in the Lanes became Forfars bakery and had a café above where I used to eat jacket potatoes. It's adjacent to Donatello's! Those parking meters! Look how smart the traffic warden was! Look how relaxed everyone seemed, especially the hippies walking along the seafront.
I wish Christian was still like this now instead of all the Americanised commercial corporate crap it is now 😢
Also, back then, toys were toys made of metal, unlike the plastic crap all made in China.
I spent my first nine years during that decade and things were less complicated back then! Rather different now, as I am now aged fifty four!
Sound steel 💪🏻
council and other related authority: we call it moving with the times, progression and well-being general public: we call it destroying a once fuctional town with rural sights and some outstanding buildings, public transport that worked and didnt bail out at 10 bays (north gate bus station) and not 1 but 3 train stations (st johns street and bridge street), high street shops that were practicle and of course a thriving market.
Lived there in 1975 Worked in Tuttles record department
Oh my gosh, I remember this 😢
You can walk in the town centre and not hear any English spoken at all.
Thank god some people still visit the town centre then or there would be literally no one there at all. Maybe us Engliah speakers should use it more.
..look at the dress code am amazed and please upload more vids
