What can we say about this performance by Craig de Faoite as Michael Collins in Sligo Gaol? Wow is a good start. Totally blown away. Collins was incarcerated in the Gaol in April 1918 after making a speech against conscription in Longford. During his three week incarceration he wrote a prison diary, in which he remarked on the conditions he experienced in the gaol. The tours were part of our Mi...

Very interesting. I came across this video whilst researching my family tree. A person, that we think was the father in law of my great great grandmother through her second marriage, was in Sligo Gaol for a short while in 1849. The record says his charge was "Rescuing himself from the custody when arrested on a barrister decree and for discharging a loaded pistol at Thady Lang" - even more interesting was that two of his relatives with the same surname were also in at the same time for the charge of "Aiding and assisting in a rescue and escape." Their ages are half his, so maybe his sons helped him escape his initial arrest. It records that they were bailed, and then no other record found except that a family that have the same names appear in England shortly after that time and one of the sons - James Early married my great great grandmother.

It is so fascinating to research family history, I am here for the same reason - a relative appears to have spent some time in there. I commented above, he was in there in 1849 for a short while.

An Offaly woman with a wide interest and intellect surrounding Sligo Gaol. Far greater than most native people in Sligo.
