Tuning my Noble & Cooley Snare Drum
A real quick video describing the relationship of the top and bottom heads of my Noble and Cooley snare drum. It’s a solid shell, so it sounds wonderful because of the way it’s built, but it also has a lot to do with tuning and how you hit it. I hope you enjoy.

Bass Drum Triplet (Double) Control And Ghost Note Exercise Drum Lesson
Переглядів 2495 років тому
Here’s a simple exercise that will work both your right (bass drum) foot as well as your left hand ghost/grace notes (at the same time). It’s based on triplets and will help you develop a flow for more interesting grooves around the drum set. Spend some time with this, practicing with a metronome, and you will see results fairly quickly. "Like" and "Subscribe"!

Without warming up on a practice pad, I sat down and filmed a chunk of morning playing. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, warming up on the practice pad is essential and I can clearly see from watching this that I hadn’t. Filming is a great way to learn about your playing and see what refinements you need to make in order to be a better player. While I’m not totally happy with this, I ...

My take on Mama Help Me by Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians. Came out pretty good. I wasn't trying to cover it exactly lick for lick-trying more for the incredible feel Matt Chamberlain has on this particular drum track. Mixed and synced with iMovie.
A true drumming master.
@@caferrara well, hey, thanks! Might be time to upload some new vids as it’s been a minute. Glad you enjoyed that!
Im lookin at a 6.5x14 maple. Just lookin through sound sample vids and this popped up.. your set siumds awesome man!!🤘
@@cobra1995xx you should get it. Don’t even think twice. It’s got everything you could want in a snare drum!
Good video . Enjoy your drum.
Great video Don. I agree with your comments. Like you, my Eames bebop birch kit was made by Joe and I use the same N&C snare with similar tuning as your snare drum. I use a small piece of moon gel tucked near the rim...works great. Great drumming man! Cheers from Vegas.
Amazing! I’m glad you self indulged 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Thanks, man!!
I have a 5 piece set of these in turquoise blue. Great instruments.
They just sound…amazing. Clear heads, coated.. it doesn’t matter. Perfect balance of warmth and definition.
@@Shylastahl1 yeah I have clear heads but I might try coated sometime. Just for fun? 🤩
Hi, your Ride Cymbal? Appreciate the info.
20” Paiste Traditionals Med Light Ride. She’s my #1. Not too “ding-y”, icy bell, and not too much definition. Soft feel too.
FINALLY!!! Someone out there agrees with me about offing the moon gel and letting the drum do its thing. And I love the Honk!! Drummers have to stop butchering their equipment. I wish some one would do a good video on this subject. Thanks!
One more note: Don't let that moon gel touch your expensive lacquer finish, it will leave a non-removable stain.

See my Description. I posted a correction after I made the video.
Love your bass drum sound! How do you tune it? Would love to get that tone outta of mine as well
Aquarian Super Kick I (Clear) with a single ply ebony front head and a fleece throw inside the drum barely touching the front and back heads. I also installed a Kickport on the front head years ago. It might have boosted the “punch” and low end a bit. The 20” size of the bass drum needed a bit more low end. That’s it. Oh, I also bought DW beaters so I could use the plastic/felt sides at will. In this vid I’m prob using the plastic side. Can’t be sure.
I should also mention that the tension on the back head is just above minimal. Pretty loose.
Hey Don. I love the sounds you get from tuning your snare like this. I might have to steal this trick on my Noble & Cooley walnut snare. Thanks for this video. Simon Phillips is a monster on the scene!
Right on man...
Nice playin" for sure! as a fellow Eames drum owner; may I ask what bass pedal U are using? Thanks!
Thanks, Drummz! Probably Pearl Eliminator with blue cams. If it wasn’t, then it was a Flying Dragon by Yamaha. What I really miss are those Sonor drums. Should have never sold them! So punchy.

Excellent playing, Don!!!
Thanks! I was channeling my “inner Steve Gadd”, just playing what the music called for, nothing more!
@@Shylastahl1 - I absolutely love it. I would love to see more content from you. You're of the same ilk as Gadd, Vinnie, Weckl, Bissonette - the world class guys.

Great playing, Don! I'd love to hear more about your stick grip. I had to sub, because you're a great player, and seem like a genuinely great guy. Thanks!
Ok, I haven’t done avid in awhile, so… that’ll be next! Standby.
Were you able to figure out which model these were, Don? Not many people are playing the uber-thick 12ply series (which I personally loved). Maybe these were the 9ply?
Phil-I have not, but your question is now making me wonder again. Finetone/6 ply, Naturaltone/9 or Mastertone/12 ply? I’ve been away from that kit for 2 weeks (got Covid. BOOO!!), but I’ll check and get back to you on Wed. Cool?
@@Shylastahl1 Shit, brother! Take care of yourself. Don’t worry about me, brother. Health comes first. Wheel carry-on, once you get your health back.👍
Man....I'd love to hear those mic'd up really well. I had a set of the Mastertone's back in the day, and every sound engineer that mic'd them up said they were the best sounding kit they've ever heard. Super thick, deep shells, that despite their size and thickness were soooo musical, and warm sounding. Recorded spectacularly. Very cool to see someone playing these. And, yes Massachusetts seems to be the custom drum capital of the world...lol. What model snare is that Don? Brilliant playing. You've got an incredibly beautiful sound going on with that setup. Well done, brother!
Nice drumming. I have only just heard of Eames. Long time TAMA player but looking to change to a new brand. Those drums sound nice
Man...they sound AWESOME
Can we get some low tuning clips with the die cast and wide open? Curious to see how low it goes at the 5’ depth. Drum sounds great!
Hi Don, great sound and playing all around! I‘m about to do a lot of new UA-cam clips soon, especially on my snare drums. So yours is very inspiring!

Hello from Colorado

Thanks, man!!
Hi! I just came across this. Very cool! I have an Eames kit that Joe made me back in 1992. I gigged this thing all over Mass and up and down the east coast until 2001 when I moved away. I still have them... they just need new heads and a good cleaning and they are ready do go. 8x10, 9x12, 14x14, and a 15x15 (weird I know) and a 16x22 bass drum, natural birch finish. I used Yamaha Tour Custom hardware, RIMS mounts and Yamaha 9000 series tom mounts and bass drum legs. (looks very much like yours!) Your kit sounds great! I wish I had gotten a snare....
Clean em and put some new heads on! Don’t wait!

Killer sounding set of drums, man I want one of these
@Fusion72 you’re right-clear heads, coated heads, thick OR thin...they’re all great on an Eames kit. You get attack and thunder. I’ll NEVER sell them. It’s a beautiful kit in looks and sound and WHEN I DO take them out, they’re all anyone can talk about. I need to do a proper video, mixed thru Apple Logic. Thanks for the comment!!
Have you ever considered Sponsorships from the manufacturers and sellers of the equipment you use ? I manage a few artists and have a small Record Label and pursue this angle for income and free advertisement for the artists and product we produce. Artist's reap a 50% income for all revenues. Each spiff gets a contract of course that is negotiable at anytime.
Oh.. BTW.. your video tech is great as well as the sound. If you ok it we could include this content in any product that Rock n I create for Drumming Up Hope as well as the TV Station .. content for the public. Up to you... I never do anything that creators OR subjects that do not approve FIRST.
hEY Don .. David Land here GoTVweb Productions and FCPublicMedia.org (me n Rock are station PRODUCERS at ) Comcast Cable-vision Television Ch97 (do you have this Cable service ???) Thanks for all your music and Fun over the years ! Yes, we are working with Tim to get all the sign-offs. Editing is major time consuming as me n' Rock work a lot for so many clients. But your approved by the station and you can sign off when we get done with the first release to the TV Station. Me n Rock also.. got our RockTVProduction and GoTVweb and GoToJam Records content as well and no "signoff" is required as we are Independant Executive Producers with OUR OWN OWNERSHIP COPYRIGHTED HD CONTENT for Tim and the org.. and of course any drummer's that want stuff from Tim . Everyone thinks video is "snap and go" but it takes many months in post-editing and creation of CD DVD 360DEGREE VIDEO(that we also got as well) and even "3D" versions but takes forever and a day as like the music artists our paying customers must come 1st. Still owe Mer some stuff from (2) events in 2018. See ya' in da' movies Kid ! Will text ya' when rushes on DVD are available (no sign off needed) for you own personal archive and uses. ) Just subscribed to your channel. I have 3 channels on UA-cam.
I have an Eames 10/14/18 kit and also have Larrie Londin's 14" x 4' 15 ply triple vented Eames Master Model Snare (built in 1981). Eames have all the bite and attack of high end Sonors along with the pure tone of say a Yamaha Recording Custom. Fantastic drums and definitely my "go to" kit.
They're amazing. You're right about the Yamaha sound quality. They're VERY similar. I really need to get on ordering a 22" kick for it. The 20" is OK (and seems to be a very "East Coast thing"), but I NEED the thump of a bigger bass. Thanks for the comment!!!
Kendall Turnage a 14x4 15 ply Eames owned by Larry Londin... priceless, to be sure!
Wow! Great Playing here!
DrumScripts Thanks! Be sure to check out the other clips (and share with your buds).
Evan-Get some! The tone IS pretty great and while having a sound that’s their own, they work for every musical situation. I’ll own these forever.
Looking into picking up a Eames 6.5 x 14 snare myself. These drums sound killer even through the phone ..nice even attack and tone on those toms.
Nicely done Don
