Sir Nigel Gresley. Class A4 Approaching Shrewsbury
In this short video you can see the great Class A$ named after its designer Sire Nigel Gresley.
Approaching Shrewsbury (Bayston Hill) just before the quarry on the 27/07/2023
I tried to keep up with it with my drone, but even in sports mode there was no keeping up.

Approaching Berwick Tunnels south portal. Completed in 1797 this tunnel is an impressive piece of architecture. As we fly up from Berwick wharf we come across the magnificent south portal of Berwick tunnel which is still standing today and holding water.

Shrewsbury Newport Canal A short flight showing the Shrewsbury canal running from the A5 end to the north portal of Berwick Tunnel. Across the A5 you will see the railway line. Under that bridge and along is where the canal ran. I fly as far as I can towards the other end of the tunnel which is around 900 yards long. I will be posting further videos on this lovely disused canal which is being l...
Where is part 3?
Never understood why they built a tunnel as they could have dug a cutting. Probably like a few railways were they built tunnels because the parasites that owned the land didn’t want it intruded upon. Funny that, as they usually were responsible for clearing the highlands… like the Levinson Gower shower of shit did
1:49 The drone is flying along the length of the old canal tunnel which still exists and is being restored. If you want to find out more, Google Shrewsbury and Newport Canal… although there are many good attempts to reopen her, the people of Newport clearly are not interested which is really sad.
1:14 Blimey Lubstree wharf Imwas there a week or two ago looking to have a look at the tunnel portals
Could do with some description of what we're looking at
It’s the Shrewsbury and Newport Canal and the tunnel which is being restored. Further along the canal route goes through to Roden where Thomas Telford built a smallish cast iron aqueduct which is still in good shape although cut off from the canal at both ends as the embankment has been levelled.
Excellent and very interesting hoping part 3 will appear one day
Absolutely brilliant research. Are we going to see part 3 soon? At Kinnersley there was a bridge over the canal which has been demolished. My dad took me fishing there as a very young boy. I plan to go and see the place where I believe it was. I’ve found a couple of photographs. Do you have any information about it?
Fascinating video. Was part 3 ever released? I looked on your channel but didn't see it. Parts 1 and 2 are just fantastic!
Is there a part 3 ?
Super video, didn’t know this canal existed. Really interesting to find out more about it.
Hi, is that Tommy Jobson's voice I hear?
It’s such a shame that there is so little will to restore the canal, certainly at Newport, all the key influencers seem to be casting so much doubt on its feasibility that it seems to block the idea. At one time I was subscribing and contributing to the canals funding and then realised Bugger all was ever going to happen. Such a shame
Excellent video. Very interesting to see inside the tunnel. I used to live in sundorne & spent many Happy hours as a boy playing down by the old canal. It would be so good to see it fully restored & reinstated back on the main network👍.
A friend showed this to me today and told me a little of its history, never knew there was a hidden canal under the fields. I like the drone footage on this and the other videos. Subscribed :)
This is the Norbury Junction to Shrewsbury canal near to Upton Magna and the A5
Awesome spot & Martyn is doing a great job of keeping it tidy !
Another great video. Looking forward to part 3👍👍
Coming soon!
Really good video, explaining where the canal began in Shrewsbury. 👍👍👍
Fascinating. Thank you very much. Looking forward to part 3. I grew up in a house that backed onto the canal in Newport and as a local history living adult, this really hit the spot.
thanks very much. Working on part 3 now, a lot to cover in this one so is taking a little longer to put together, but will have it out asap.
Interesting Video
climate change in 1700s causing abnormal flooding ! the river roden runs so fast under this aquaduct,.
Fantastic research. Thank you
pleasure! its great fun putting this all together.
Certain parts of canal have been built over already in Ditherington and Castlefields, and gas mains buried in what was canal.
they have, but the plans are to re open as much as possible.
I'm surprised you didn't mention canal cottage in Withington which still has the canal bridge in place
its no longer there
I can assure you it is because we own it!
@@paullawrence-wyatt7960 Hi Paul, well thats interesting. I was told that it wasn't there anymore. But if you would let me come and take some videos and pictures it would be great to add in as an update in part 3. Would that be ok with you??
Fascinating, like part 1. I note that the cast iron strapping post on the outside of the top lock gate (the swinging gate) appears to be of the standard Shropshire Union design, of which there's still quite a few on the Audlem flight where we are. So there was some standardisation, which I guess I would expect.
thats interesting, i hadn't thought of that. but it makes sense
Interesting
wonderful, thanks
national highways now have to restoration of any heritage asset that the building of Trunk Road ect more info on this legislation please
Ill speak to the trust and pass on any information they have. What Ive put in here is the information that I was given after the first video.

superb presentation,well done.
Absolutely brilliant, you have put so much work into this, equally as important as those great guys doing the restoration work! Thanks.
Really excellent presentation, thanks. Re the canal gates going to London- you could enquire of the London Canal museum at King’s Cross which I visited recently- very knowledgeable and helpful there, although I saw no gates at the exhibition.
Thanks for the reply. I have since found out they did go down, but as far as I know they weren't displayed. They were cut up for fire wood in the end. which is very sad.
@@Stuvon101 ah pity, thanks for the update
very informative and excellent presentation. Brilliant, well done and thank you.
Thanks, Kathy
Great video - please check out my 2 part film about the Trench arm of the shropshire canal on Telford Ultimate Guide - Good research !
shall do! ill be covering that very shortly, so will for sure give it a watch
Fantastic work! Thankyou from DownUnder. 🙃
Thanks very much. Glad ive reached that far! Part 2 should completed in the next couple of days :-)
Fascinating. I've lived by the Shroppie at Audlem for 15 years, but knew little about this part of it, except that I published the book "Shropshire Union Fly-Boats, The Jack Roberts Story", which talks about boating along the canal well over 100 years ago. It's great to actually see what Jack described. Looking forward to the next instalment!
Thanks peter, should be out in the next few days hopefully.
Interesting stuff, thanks for the video.
Hi, great to watch. I have done alot of work with my drone for Shropshire Canals. Here is link to video I done of Berwick Wharf ua-cam.com/video/-BNp-CFYrAo/v-deo.html . Please take a look at my UA-cam site for alot more footage. Happy to help. Just search for gfap media on you tube.
Nice video, thank you. Tree roots have grown into the tunnel, so there are a myriad of fine hanging roots to get thru if you are going to fly thru. You might need the hedge trimmer attachment for your drone !
I was hoping to send the drone through, losing the GPS would make it impossible to get nice footage. So we will walk through with the go pro in a couple of months when we get the go ahead.
@@Stuvon101 You'll have trouble walking thr - the water is deep & there is no towpath !
well done on producing this, anything that gets the canal in front of people, helps to get more chance of it all coming back to life...!
