So Marc had a severe case of writers block and to clear his head he took a trip to Memphis. It was literally raining when he landed at the terminal. He really did attend a tabernacle revival hosted by Rev. Al Greene. He said that he wept the entire time, because he's not an overly religious man, but he felt the spirit that day. He really did go The Hollywood to play in an open mic and Muriel was a real woman who frequented there. In between sets the got to know each other and he had mentioned that he had never gotten over the death of his mother. Their last song of the night was Amazing Grace. After the song she leaned into his ear and said "you can let go, honey". He said from that day on he was a changed man. Came home and wrote Walking Memphis.

Loved Madonna's career up to this point, but when she released this song in 1986 I knew that she was here to stay and that she was an incredible talent. This song has so much meaning and is so deep that she has continued to sing it as a tribute to AIDS victims the world over in many of her tours. BTW, the young man in the video is actor Sean Penn who was Madonna's husband at the time. Great reaction!
