Book Restoration Gone Wrong... And How I Fixed it
The Benziger Brothers were some of the most prolific Catholic book printers in the 19th century. This antique second edition of "My First Communion: The Happiest Day of My Life" was translated from the original German and printed in the late 1800s. The book was meant to be both a remembrance and sacramental preparation for first Holy Communion in the Catholic Church.
Using various book binding, book conservation, and book restoration techniques, I attempt to transform this raggedy rare book to a usable statement piece for my bookshelf.

For that swell all you have to do is place a wooden board on each side of the book block as close to the spine edge as possible and place in a flat press for an over night session! This should correct it!!

You did an excellent job in restoring the Liber Usualis, which is a book of the liturgical chants of the Roman Rite year. I know what it is because I own one myself, having been part of the schola at a SSPX chapel for some years. If you have a chance, come visit St. Mary's, KS, and our new Immaculata Church. The bookstore on the main street perhaps sells some of these books you are restoring. God bless.

Very well-made video! I appreciated the alternations between book work and commentary. It flowed well. I personally would have loved to see even more of the restoration process, as I could tell there was a lot you probably decided to cut from the final video. I'm fascinated by the process and can tell you are a master!

It is impressive!
Do you have to put some sort of sealant over the gold after it’s been tooled into the leather to keep it from flaking?
Typically no. This is gold heat activated foil so it adheres pretty well. Old school gold tooling with real gold was adhered with an egg white base and seldom flakes off.

It's very interior me as I have old family books and old books I have bought that need attention, but are only worth something to me, so seeing this makes me think I might be able to find put more Nd maybe repair some of the issues my old books have and of cause the first question I have is what to uses eg, glue do I use that will do no further harm to the books. Paperwise I know about archival, acid free paper, but there's a lot to think about and find out before I touch anything 😊 Thank you for showing us your work, every old book is worth keeping and not either throwing away or cutting up for scrap type books 😢
Breaks my heart to see old books cut up for scrap. If you’re looking to repair your books I suggest using starch paste. It’s reversible.
I see you have covered up the information on the inside covers. Surely that is part of the history of the book. Is it now lost or can your work be undone and Mr Harrison's name and 1883 be restored? Nice to watch you work Malik
