All the licks you could ever want in G! Also that lick that he plays over the C chord is sick! This break comes from Bluegrass Album Band Vol. 4.

I get asked very frequently about how to practice scales and to improve at improvising. Becoming familiar with all your major scales and being able to manipulate them are very powerful ways to get them under your fingers. Unfortunately, there is no quick way to do this. You just have to spend the time doing it and in this video we'll look at a few ways that will force your brain to crunch the s...

Happy Holidays everyone! This week for transcription Tuesday we have a well known and perhaps infamous Mark O'Connor solo on Freeborn Man from Merlefest in 1993. The year I was born! I'm pretty sure every fiddle player out there has seen this video and is in my opinion actually one of the best bluegrass fiddle breaks that exist on the internet. It truly is that good. This is incredible the pitch bends are so clean and snazzy 🫢
Fabulous!!!!
Nice ❤
Such a killer break! Impeccable playing.
Perfect. Fiddlers look so elegant and have so much finesse
Sounds so good
I wish I could make a noise on mine. I don’t know why fiddle has to be so hard
Pretty Dang Good 👍👍👍👍✌️❤️
Your lesson is a true gem, thanks! I've been working on old time by ear for a while, and your insights about bow speed, accents, ornamentation and your clear and articulate style just cleared up loads of stuff for me. Thanks again!
Nice!
Got that hicks tone!!!! Beautifully done!
But that's TOY HEART! Awesome job though!
Can you play 5-6-7-8 and may i make it my ringtone if you do?
Wow, that's great.🎉
Thank you!
I would love to wake up to that every morning. That would make my DAY.
Are you part of the infamous sawyer family? 🤯
Haha what Sawyer family is that????
@@lilliansawyerfiddle the family from the Texas chainsaw massacre
Crazy how my foot immediately started tapping. Thank you very much for the good music in my day. 👍
That's what I love to hear!
Beautiful! Thank you for sharing your talent👍💖💖 Never quite enough fiddlers to go around at the jams
Ok 👍
Love this!
Great job. I struggle with that lick that goes around :20 to :23....tough 3 seconds.
Czardas please 🙏 😢 😭 😫
I’m amazed that she learned it so well she didn’t even have to watch her hands!
Hell yes! What an awesome record and especially that song. You sound awesome!
Im absolutely in love with your playing. Nice work!
@@ryanj1262 That is so nice to hear! I’m really grateful. 🙏❤️
Great lesson! Beginners and intermediate need to learn more songs by ear. Learning just the notes makes us lazy and we don't really hear the song. Great lesson, thanks!
@@FrankJFerendo Thank you so much Frank!
I want go get myself a 5 sting after listening to this, just like you’re playing Lillian, and just like Bobby Hicks played.
@@martinmulvany1157 They’re awesome! There’s some good ones out there!
Hi Lillian, I’m a retired pianist getting into guitar. I’m wondering if you have any recommendations for people to listen to that specialize in this type of music?
@@onethousandtwonortheast8848 This Jim Mill’s Bound to Ride record is a good place to get the sound of bluegrass in your ear. As far as guitar goes anything by Tony Rice, Dan Tyminski, Bryan Sutton, Courtney Hartman.
@@lilliansawyerfiddle thank you so very much!
fantastic!!!
Unreal!
A lovely waltz and beautifully played!
“Bluegrass does not fall into this category” ie. music with a groove, music for dancing. That is a game changer for me.
I want to clarify the comment a bit because bluegrass is a groove based music BUT the modern tendency is to play smoothly and with an evenness to tone and attack where every note is played with more or less the same intensity. It could still be helpful for bluegrass but I don’t tend to use this approach when practicing bluegrass.
I wish I could play mine. You look so smooth and good doing it
It’s a Hammons tune.
Awesome thank you!
Great lesson. alot to digest here.
This is a difficult tune! I’m gonna do something easier for the next one!
@@lilliansawyerfiddle as a more intermediate player I like the content. It’s very easy to find beginner lessons so you should stick to what you want to show people ;). For instance I loved the Aubrie Haynie SSotM lesson and I have watched it a few times.
Wonderful lesson. Thank you.
You’re welcome!
I think You are talking about the most fundamental things. I do the same with singing or any other activity. I also practice Chi Gong which is like slow breathing and slow moving. Btw. I've changed the pich of all the music i work to 432 Hz tuning standard. I recommend this change to everyone. Thank You for Your education. ☯️🙏
Absolutely! Someone else made the same connection to Chi Gong!
Hi, hate to be negative but!… not sure what level of player you’re pitching this at, but how is this a “lesson” when you don’t teach the notes of the tune?? P.S. You have a great control of your technique, nice sound and you’re obviously an accomplished musician, but overall this video was dull. Must try harder! Nice playing though 👍🏻🎻
I appreciate the feedback! The idea is that you’re supposed to learn the tune by ear and that I have slowed it down and broken it into bite-sized chunks to digest. I think my content is currently targeted at people who already have a familiarity with the genre and have some understanding of the fundamentals of it.
@@lilliansawyerfiddle as a professional musician and violin teacher myself, this method is fine for me. I just think that it’s a big ask for a lot of students to be able to learn a tune by ear. Your control over your fingering hand (I can’t tell whether you’re right or left handed) is incredible and at times it’s like your fingers aren’t even moving, so it’s difficult to even guess where you’re playing. I just think even putting up the sheet music would at least be of use as not everyone can just use their ears. You’re a great player and I wish you all the best. I’m not an internet troll and never comment like this usually but I was compelled as a teacher to ! ☺️
@@jezking8816 Funny. I came here to say that this lesson was at exactly the right level, exactly in the goldilocks zone for me. I'm barely a beginner at the fiddle (but coming from other instruments), and very much into learning this style of music by ear. Thank you so much. I just wanted to counter the negative feedback a bit. I HATE lessons where tunes are taught note by note. I don't have the patience for those. All to say, for some of us, this was just perfection. Thanks!
@@engelsanchez I’m happy for you. My comment was merely as a professional violin teacher, in my experience very few students can work out tunes by ear. If you read my comment properly I basically just advised to attach the sheet music for assistance to the learner. It was just an observation using my experience as a teacher. 👍🏻🎻
@@engelsanchezI appreciate your feedback as well!
That is Awesome!! Playing. Thank You.
Thank you Dan!
Where you guys from?
You think that would be important information haha... we're both from Portland, OR. There is a really great scene over here and Josiah is one of the best!
@@lilliansawyerfiddle haha thanks i couldn't see the about info on my phone for some reason but you totally have it covered there which i can see on my laptop. thanks for replying you guys sound great if i was in the area i would want to jam :)
Fabulous playing and info - many thanks indeed :-) My question is really basic: are you really left-handed or is that just a technical quirk due to your filming method?
I think my phone just films in mirrored version? Not actually left handed haha
Very helpful, thanks!
I would say you have the metronome set to half-time with the metronome beats falling on 1 and 3. When you are set to 44 BPM, this is really 88 BPM while playing the piece. I do this same thing, but usually with the metronome beats falling on 2 and 4 instead. I love practicing with a metronome set to half-time in this way and also get a lot of good information from it. I think your intention to practice at slower tempos to establish a solid groove is a good way to go.
Anything with a tempo. Thumbs up again. Kewl.
One through seven the octave in any key. Thank you, Lil.
Lefty! And you play beautifully. Great lesson.
Brilliantly simple to try, maddeningly difficult to master!
Yup!
Thinking the same thing...
