Now that Shout finally acquired the deal with Golden Princess which I never have thought that it would happen ever, I’m eager to see what’s the right boutique label to release these classic John Woo films, maybe an ultimate box set that includes A Better Tomorrow trilogy, The Killer, Bullet in the Head, etc.? Arrow, perhaps?

As hyped as I am but what sucks is that means only region A versions of these great films are coming unless 88 Film, Arrow, Radiance or Eureka come along to save the day for us UK folk

Hope somebody hooks me up with Shout Factory! I would like to rework on the english translations for Ringo Lam's School of Fire. Last time, Joy Sales by no fault of their own, gave me the Mandarin dub transcript. I only had that to base my translations on.

Chinese Ghost Story is one of my favorite movies. Got a okay blu ray (with terrible subtitles; about as bad as the old Teng Seng DVD), but I'd be willing to double-dip on that, especially if they release a box set of the trilogy like they did of The Brave Archer series. I was pretty happy with the first volume of Shout's Shaw Bros. Classics, although I haven't explored it fully yet. Only misstep I found so far are the subtitles on Sword of Swords.

Luckily Shout has sublicensing rights for non-Asian territories so UK labels will have a crack at these films. Super stoked!!!

Cool news, but I'm not the biggest shout fan. I'll give them props for the Shaw bros sets. Keeping my fingers cross hopefully Arrow gets them across the pond. They would give those films a proper treatment. 👊👊

Yeah I have doubts too about Shout Factory (especially because to me this means more imports......), and I definitely would've preferred Arrow or 88 Films to handle this. But the important thing is that these titles ar finally FREE. I can't find your video with Djeng talking about the difficulties of this licensing, is it still up..?

Holy shit, this is great news. I'd say you're right, shout will probably want to licence them to other distributors in different territories to try and recoup some of the costs. Fingers crossed this happens

What's the price & how was the video quality?

Fortune Star wouldn't let me touch the John Woo movies with a ten foot pole even back in my Joy Sales days. From my understanding, they were okay with me retranslating all non-remastered releases but have some kinda rule stating that all remastered films are to be left intact, including English subtitles. We had a huge debacle over Ringo Lam's "School of Fire". Got so bad that we caved in and just released it without any remastering. On a sidenote, upon finally watching School of Fire with my English translations for subtitles, I was not very happy with the end result. Turns out I was only given the Mandarin dub dialog subtitle transcript as reference and I wanted to translate directly from its original Cantonese from the very start.

It looks like you are serious collector!! There is a label in China that releases nice blus. It's called Disk Kino. Worth getting some of those.

Bey Logan's 'Hong Kong Action Cinema' is also a top-tier book about the genre. I doubt it is still in print, though. Logan has been pretty much cancelled in the last few years do to some unsavoury allegations, particularly some made during his time working for Miramax. But the guy IS the encyclopedia of HK film. And not just as a fanboy, but from directly inside the industry. He knows it on a molecular level. It's a shame his excellent commentaries have been scrubbed from subsequent releases of these classic films.

I managed to get a copy of this for 87 pounds. It's certainly not cheap on the after market, but some people are trying to sell it for hundreds of pounds! Crazy...

I have the original version with the black cover that came out in the 90s. Like everything Eastern Heroes put out back then it seemed pretty cheaply made. The binding in the spine started to disintegrate almost immediately and big chunks of the book just fall out.. The video tapes they used to put their films on were absolute garbage as well. But their content was always A+. I'm Australian so getting the magazine and books was incredibly expensive and time-consuming. Actually, all of the best HK movie content was coming out of the UK. There was a great video label called 'Made in Hong Kong' that I bought a lot of stuff from. Ahhh those were the days...
