    Yeah, but for the lady to open the box and reveal that John Locke’s body was in it totally contradicts. What happens when Jack opened his father’s coffin. His father’s body wasn’t there which seems to hint at the fact that the black monster needs a dead body in order to walk around in it

      The box being empty in the case of Jack (especially in the final scene of the show) is a good point to bring up because it ties back into another aspect of the mystery box. Lost has the message that the destination is equally important to the journey (the mysteries are equally important to the character study). Ultimately, the mystery box is 'empty' because the individual Candidate/viewer brings everything to it. This is something that Jack struggles with. The idea that whatever was inside the Box has already gone somewhere else is a level of uncertainty that many people can struggle with. But when Jack comes face to face with that something in The End (his father) he is able to reconcile and find closure.

    Just watched through from this to 42. Great stuff! I love seeing everybody's different theory-of-everything interpretations. Everyone fills in the gaps differently. This might be the analysis that has made the most sense to me in terms of the Walt, Horse, Yemi, and Goodspeed apparitions all forwarding the Smoke Monster's goals. I also love any analysis that adds more continuity to the Locke->Smoke Locke character arc like this does.

    I do not remember seeing Damon saying this about the monster so thank you very much for bringing this up. I will have to think more about Jacob shaping island events through his subconscious. Jacob was not a white hatted good guy. He used and treated people terribly. He set up Locke and Ben. But MIB is as evil. No goodness there. He would have spread his evil, killed everyone, or put out the lights inside humanity if he had gotten free of the island. He was what Jacob corked up in the island.

    Thinking about this some more, if the MiB just waited, he would had won if Boone doesn't die. Desmond was at his braking point, and started to read his final book Penny gave him to keep his hope alive and to have something to look forward to when dealing with a difficult situation. Putting Boone in a situation which caused his death, made Locke question his visions the island gave him and bang on the hatch door, thus causing Demond to start to question what he was doing but continue to press the button a little longer. I think a plot hole with the story was Desmond heard Locke banging on the hatch door, but he didn't hear Locke and Boone digging around the hatch and trying break into it with various creative tools Locke created.

When Ben killed Jacob, Jacob told him he had a choice. Juliet could had pulled the shot with 21 seconds left on the clock, but didn't do it. Had she pulled the shot it would had released the gas and killed most of the people on the island. I also didn't make the connection that Jin was the MIB when Hurley was bing eating in his dream and how he almost blew up the hatch because of trick planted in Hurley's head from the MIB.

    So you believe Radzinsky created the dead man switch in hatch after the purge? That would explain why the Hostiles allowed him to live and why they didn’t replaced Kelvin. It would also explain why the training film stated that to only use the computer to press the button and to not use it for communications. Since Radzinsky knew nobody was reading the logs dumped in a field, pushing the button in the hatch was probably a meaningless test, so he removed that portion of training film. The only critical part was pushing the button. Maybe when he created the dead man switch is when he edited the film. One thing that doesn’t make sense is how the edited portion of the film ended up in the Arrow hatch. I would think he would had thrown it away. Lastly, I think after Radzinsky killed himself the Hostiles would had made contact with him to provide replacements since Kelvin would not be able to push the button forever. Pushing a button every 108 minutes is impossible for two people…but doing it alone would not work. The person would never get any sleep. Watching Kelvin and Desmond, they should had saw they both of them were starting to crack by staying in the hatch too long and they needed to interact with other people. Once Kelvin decided he was going to leave, he should had taken Desmond outside to train him how the supply drops worked. By not training Desmond how the supply trains worked, he was setting Desmond up to fail. That was also a great catch that Ben may not had pushed the button since the hatch was in a lock down mode because of a supply drop. I completely missed that and thought he pushed the button but said he didn’t to place doubt in John’s mind.

    Some interesting analysis, although I think you overemphasize the water bit. Remember, when Mother passed the torch as protector to Jacob, she used wine, not water. Also, how does the cork fit into this theory? If water was needed to cool the source by flowing freely into the opening, the cork, placed after the MiB was made into Smokey, would prevent the water from entering.

    You brought up some interesting points on the video. One thing I’m going to disagree with, though, is the idea that the Egyptians were there and gone long before Jacob and the MiB. I think there’s quite a bit of evidence to the contrary in the show. Keep in mind that the the Egyptian civilization coexisted with Rome at this time (2,000 years ago). 1. Jacob’s tapestry. It seems to depict the history of the Egyptians on the island. It shows a hand touching people (like Jacob does to bring candidates to the island), a conflict, then (all or some) of them leaving by boat. Given the history the Mother taught Jacob, how could he know this? Why would he have such an affinity for a culture that left the island long before he was born (even using an ankh as his personal seal)? 2. Lack of buildings/monuments. We never see the Temple, lighthouse or statue of Taweret in Across the Sea. Mother lives in the caves because there are no other structures on the Island. Even Claudia’s people live in a village made from scratch. In the 20 or so years the MiB was with them exploring and digging wells, you’d think they’d come across something. 3. Heart of the Island. When Mother shows the boys the heart of the Island, the light is way brighter than when Jack gets there with Desmond and Fake Locke. This is because the “cork” has been placed there due to the “ancient incident”. The cork, obviously placed after “Across the Sea” is inscribed with hieroglyphics and cuneiform script. 4. Donkey wheel chamber. After Mother fills in the chamber excavated by the MiB, another one is dug later in the spot where Sawyer lowers Locke in the well next to the Orchid (after the time flash, the rope is left in the ground, and that’s where it was dug. This is obviously a different location (in the jungle as opposed to the field where the MiB well was located). This chamber is covered in hieroglyphics, but has the same structure (and wheel) as the chamber Mother destroyed, but was obviously dug at a later point in time.

      I never noticed the history being told in the tapestry before! I go back and forth on the timeline placement, but something visual like the history on the tapestry I find pretty convincing. Great point!

    I like the idea Mother was a previous Smoke Monster. Cool. No issues there. But you're wrong about the monster not being her or MIB. It's not some essence, it's them. Why would ghosts of people they haunted haunt something that isn't them? It wouldn't. It's because the people who killed them - now Smoke Monsters - are living with he guilt. Great video though. I love discussing LOST.

    • @gibby525
      @gibby525 3 місяці тому

      Definitely check out the other videos if you haven't because I go into this more. I think it's something the show is asking, and there isn't possibly a clear answer to: Are we just the sum of our memories or is there something else? If a perfect copy of Mother's or the MiB's memories can be transferred (or, to me, copied) to a cloud of some magnetized exotic matter or metal, that can replicate their old bodies to the cell, and their original body is left behind, are they technically still their selves or are they 'dead?' I would argue dead, and you would argue that they are not, I think. We don't see an indication of what happens to the MiB or Mother in a sideways, so we don't know when they technically 'died.' These theories are from a specifically materialist view point I guess, and I don't really disagree with you. There were other pieces from other videos that focus on the Monster becoming more like John Locke and Christian over time. This better explains 'Christian' taking Claire, or the Monster becoming more like Locke over time, eventually repeating his trick of c4 hidden in a back pack to destroy the submarine. Also Smoke Locke manipulates Ben into killing the one person Ben seeks the approval of, as revenge for Linus making John kill Anthony Cooper, the one person he sought the approval of. The Monster is struggling with its identity, but so was the MiB, and so was Locke, because aren't we all trying to figure out who we are?

    I like your ending with Faith built atop of Knowledge. I think that was the key difference between Jack and John. Jack questioned things which helped him understand and to have faith island. John blindly followed the signs he got from the island. After Boone’s death he decided that his death was the sacrifice the island wanted. After causing the death of a friend who believed in him, he should have been more cautious and talked to others about what he was seeing to try and make the right decision. When John blew up the Flame and the Sub, he was right that people should not leave the island to prevent others from coming…but he should have spoke to people first before he made that decision for everyone. Ben was right when he told Locke that the Sub was good for people’s morale since it gave them the belief they could leave the island if they no longer wanted to be there. The Flame was a critical station since it allowed the Others to know what was going on in the world and if there was a threat to the island.

      There's a great quote about him that Terry O'Quinn said in the clip show before the Series Finale, that Locke was not a man of faith but a man in search of faith. He wanted to be able to believe in something so badly, in order to begin healing, that it made him an irresistible mark for manipulative people and/or forces.

    • @gibby525
      @gibby525 4 місяці тому

      @@Lost.History- I think so, yes, mainly because of the sinister nature and because island Dave tries to get Hurley to kill himself. But it goes deeper too. Per Lindelof, self-forgiveness is the biggest theme in Lost, present even earlier than Faith & Destiny. Guilt is a uniting factor both in flashback stories and in Monster appearances, since Smokey is working against self-forgiveness & trying to elicit behavior that will cause more guilt (because Jacob's guilt, as current protector, is the overriding influence on Smokey until a replacement is found. The MiB is the symbol of his guilt, like Dave is for Hurley). Hurley saw Dave off-Island initially because he felt guilty about the deck collapse, and Dave was how Hurley punished himself (Dave pushing him to eat). On-Island, Hurley's decision to destroy the hoarded food, coupled with the food drop, allowed enough conflict within Hurley around this topic for the Monster to then manifest as Dave. He tells him "I'm part of your subconscious" and when Hurley is talking about the imaginary Dave being the most normal person in Santa Rosa, the Dr points out that Dave still doesn't want him to change. A very symbolic exchange. While the MiB/Monster's skepticism about the Island's purpose is 'normal,' it runs counter to their purpose on the Island, to change and grow beyond their past mistakes. Jacob is conflicted about human nature, which results in people being brought to the Island by the magic box, but also manipulated and endangered by the magic box, because of the memory of Jacob's shortcomings and doubts/fear that his late brother & mother are right about human nature. MiB/Monster as Dave is Hurley's guilt undermining his desire to change, something Libby supports. Love Dave, a really powerful episode.

    Christian’s appearance in “Something Nice Back Home” is actually Christian’s spirit, guiding Jack back to The Island. That appearance is not the smoke monster. It’s his real ghost, only in that one episode. All other appearances on the island, after his death, is the monster.

    • @gibby525
      @gibby525 5 місяців тому

      So, thanks for watching & commenting, first of all. I looked at it as Christian's spirit for a long time, and I understand that is the common interpretation, BUT there are more Easter eggs and clues suggesting that it was the Monster appearing off-Island, through Jack's 'infected' mind. Character episodes were broken in the writers' room a few at a time, meaning that Something Nice Back Home was written with the plots of 316 and The Lighthouse in mind. 316 is when Hawking refers to Locke as a Substitute (for Christian) and the Lighthouse is about Jack learning of his Candidacy/purpose on the Island to stop the Monster. An interesting detail about off-Island Christian is that Jack is lured out to the lobby by a beeping SMOKE alarm. The second detail about this is that Christian is dressed the same as he was in White Rabbit (later explicitly confirmed as the Monster). A third reason is the sinister nature of this appearance, especially considering comments Damon Lindelof made in 2020 about Walt also being the Monster and the scary nature of any ambiguous apparitions. Is the sinister nature of appearances a more important uniting factor than later-developed 'rules' of the Monster's imprisonment (at the time of season 4 it was still the abandoned Cabin angle)? Is the reason they must return also because they have brought a small piece of the Monster with them into the outside world? If they all drank from cave water, and were all infected, did they risk spreading it beyond the Island? Is Michael's presence on the Freighter the source of the cabin fever (Smoky was Walt on the computer, and Libby, always the one guilting Michael, pushing him to make his initial mistakes then guiltily return to help Ben sabotage the freighter/trigger the loophole)? I have (hopefully) lots more videos to come on each character. I know a canon has formed around the show but I'm hoping to somehow shake it up.

      @@gibby525Damon and Carleton also said “trust the story, not the storytellers”. Any theory must be consistent with what actually aired, whether or not it agrees with something the show runners said at some point in time (when the story wasn’t completely fleshed out or some outside force made them deviate from what they may have planned). According to show canon, the monster cannot leave the Island, so Christian in Jack’s waiting room simply cannot be Smokey. The smoke alarm is an obvious red herring, not an Easter egg. The writers loved to throw in misdirection (the whole flash-sideways started as a misdirection). I would also argue that it’s quite a stretch to say that because he was dressed the same as he was when he led Jack to the caves, and there is “proof” that it was Smokey. We know that Smokey lies to everyone in order to manipulate them: he lied to Richard, lied to Locke, lied to Claire, lied to Sayid, etc. It’s extremely hard to believe that the only time he actually told the truth when trying to manipulate someone was to Jack. I would actually go a step further (although it’s not a popular theory) and say that every time we see Christian in a suit, it’s his ghost, while every time he’s seen in in that old button-down shirt, it’s Smokey. To put it shortly, the times we know for sure it’s Christian, he’s wearing the suit; when we know for sure it’s Smokey, he’s wearing the button-down shirt. The appearances and interactions of Christian in the different outfits are qualitatively different. “Suit Christian” only appears to Jack, never speaks with him, appears at a distance, and no one else can see him. “Shirt Christian”, on the other hand, can be seen by everyone, appears in their midst, talks with and touches people. This clear difference points to two different entities.

    That was the best explanation why the MiB killed Echo…he could not be manipulated on the island like John was so many times.
