    Just subscribed after finding you on tiktok. Does the apple cider vinegar work for tick repellent ? I've got a 6 month old working bred Gordon Setter x GWP puppy & recently started gundog training with her. As you can imagine, she's pretty hairy with the feathering and being all black, ticks won't be easy to find on her.

    Lovely video. We are with our 10 week old second lab pup right now and I can relate to wanting things to fast forward a couple of months! That said, it is a joy to watch him start to explore. Thankfully, our older lab has no interest in him yet, so I'm not struggling to get the pup's attention as much.

    • @northlawgundogs5254
      @northlawgundogs5254 28 днів тому

      Yes, the attention thing is sometimes an issue, I regularly remove him from the pack to do stuff one on one. Though, it’s certainly been the case with dog 2&3, they learn from each other, particularly stuff like walking as a team ‘to heal’.

      @@northlawgundogs5254 Definitely. A friend of mine told me about two dogs they had while he was growing up. The eldest died and they realised the youngest was useless at heel walking solo; it had just been following the other!

      Colins videos are brilliant. Watched them from the start with the auld fella and genuinely one of the reasons i got my Lab and have subsequently worked her in the beating line and done a little bit of picking up. He does deserve more views and subscribers, hope his subscribers keep going up. Quite therapeutic aswell, his choice of background music is always good. As someone who doesnt really like human beings and would rather spend my time away with my dog, Watching someone spending time with just him and his 4 dogs i enjoy. Also picked up a few training exercises thst Colins done that i then incorporated into training my own dog.

      Hi Jean, food wise, they are on kibble, nothing overly expensive £22-25 / 15kg sack price range ! Dr Johns range, Skinners field and trial in the game season. What ever they have there is quite often chicken off cuts or pigeon breast (I’ve a friend that does Pest Control for farmers) but probably the main thing to add is salmon oil, more in the winter for their joints. I never over feed in the off season always watching their condition, and bump up portions when they are working. Gus is naturally very lean, the amount of people that tell me I should be feeding him up is unbelievable…..the same people that’s dogs couldn’t run the length of themselves never mind come close to what Big Red does (aye, I’m easily riled when it comes to people questioning my boys condition!😂). Sonny is petite but developing a nice strong chest and shoulders….too early for Wee Enzo but he has a healthy appetite! Thanks for your support 😘

    Enjoyed the video Think you're right, pushing a spaniels out to 250-300m is no mean feat What I might have tried was to also drop a dummy just shy of the brow. Sent him out to pick that, then immediately sent him out for one of the others hoping he'd draw confidence from the successful pick to push on further. But getting it out as far as you did is good even if he failed to pick He's a bonny dog, seemed to enjoy himself in the woods. Shoot over mine so they rarely go that far for a fallen bird, more likely a really long retrieve would be on a runner where they've taking a line. Horses for course and all that. Anyway always enjoy your videos long or short, also (nowt to do with the dogs) I enjoy the music you have on the video too. All the best, cheers.

    • @northlawgundogs5254
      @northlawgundogs5254 Місяць тому

      Thanks Peter, the reason I persist (thus far anyway) with training him to ‘get out’ was an instance last season when the labs were out picking runners then a 3rd bloody runner dropped close to us and took off. Wee Sonny was the only tool in the box I had left, he seen it and I sent him, he took the line spot on but got so far out after and proceeded to slow up and circle round! Young dog in his first season and all that, confidence issue🤷🏼 I should have tried what you said today ! A fair distance he did go out though like you say. He is a braw wee guy, I should maybe just embrace what he excels at. It was good seeing Big Red back on song, his heads been up his ar$e recently. Thanks for your support Peter.

  • @gb_barr
    @gb_barr 2 місяці тому

    Incredible around the deer at the end! How do you train that / how do you build up the exposure to game for the younger dogs until they reach that level?

    • @northlawgundogs5254
      @northlawgundogs5254 2 місяці тому

      Repetition in a nutshell. They see deer quite often, not as close as that mind you. The black lab was the only one to ever chase when he was a youngster, he was made aware in no uncertain terms it wasn’t acceptable and his never done it since. When the other dogs came along if we came across deer it was a case of timing from me to growl “no” at them if they looked like they were too interested. It’s a case of putting the dog in the situation to put the correction into them….encouraging the dog to do wrong to make it do right! In the case of chasing the rabbit if I’d seen the rabbit I would have growled at them before they chased, I was talking at the time so missed it. But like I say they or the spaniel in particular ’did wrong’ and the situation gave me a chance to see if he would stop on the whistle under severe temptation. Also bare in mind they’d been scenting rabbits seconds before so the Springer was ‘wired’ already. He is a real steady Spaniel, I was really pleased at his response to ‘the stop’. To get that kind of steadiness it is purely a case of exposing them to the temptations as often as possible. The black lab is prone to ‘running in’ on a shoot if he’s not kept in check, but he was used to being the only dog for a few years, there is a certain amount of jealousy, he thinks every bird should be his. It’s all pretty interesting working a team of very differently wired dogs.

    Another good wee video Colin.the wee man coming on a treat, and the two big fellas are impeccably trained mate, their a credit to you. I’m just curious, do you have any notion as to how the formation came about? Has Gus assumed the Alpha in the kennel, genuinely thought the big fella might have been in their, not saying he’s better or anything but just because he’s the older head of the three.
