How to Turn an 8
In this video you can see the 8 turn. Port side backs the blades and then starboard pulls. The two sides alternate these 2 maneuvers. Note that all 8 people move up and down the slide together. The boat should be balanced throughout the turn.
The command is: "Get ready to turn the boat: port to back, starboard to pull. Ready at your finish....and go".

In this video I show how a rower can turn a single. 1. The rower sits at the finish with port squared and starboard feathered. 2. The rower backs on port. Both hands move forward to the catch. 3. At the catch, port is reverse- feathered and starboard is squared. 4. Pull both hands to the body. The action can be called in this way: "Port to back, starboard to pull" The hands move together forwar...
Tap Drill for Beginner Rowers
Переглядів 5653 роки тому
New rowers sometimes struggle to get their blades out of the water at the finish. This can cause stress! The tap drill helps the new rower develop the skill of taking the blades out on the square (as opposed to feathering too soon). We can also work on hand positioning, body position and timing. An all round great drill!

What’s the name of these kinds of boats? I’ve always wanted to learn but don’t know how to find one to buy. So what is it actually called??

Oh If only it was this easy. She is an experienced rower pretending. Real beginners are all over the place and usually very nervous and wobbly. Nice to see no demands to 'get the blades off the water'. Leave that until they have learned these basics and you are teaching the real stroke, not this one which many scullers just get stuck in for ever.

@@urmom12_lovesme I fully agree with Bob. Do you think a first time rower would ever be able to remember, much less, do everything she says?

thank you for this informing video. Will the same drill help a beginner not touch the water with the feathered blades during recovery?

You can adapt this drill: after coming out on the square (tapping out), extend the arms forward : stay squared. Then sit back to the finish. Tap 3 times, then extend out on the square. This will help you keep the hands with a slight downward pressure on the handles and will definitely help you control the stroke out of the finish. Keep it up!!
