I ended up not using the included rivnuts but just pulled down the headliner slightly and just used nuts and bolts. My -71 f100 poured fluid everywhere, turned out to be the cap in the bottom of the piston that was corroded to crumbles, you can see it in the top of the picture at about 7:00, with a hex head, causing the fluid to run around as it liked...

    Question: what is the order of parts below the sector shaft bearing? Is it the oil seal, then dust cap, then snap ring, then Pitman arm? Or is it bearing, then oil seal, then snap ring, then dust seal, then Pitman arm? I am repairing mine and looks like the old snap ring fell out a long time ago

    Just like I post on other videos I don't see how people are putting this on and saying it last forever and "tough". I can't get it to stick for anything. The glue surface barely has any glue on it at all and it's not very sticky it peels off immediately as soon as you brush against anything or even touch it. I just don't see how you can wash it or wear it anytime and have it hold. I even heated it with a lighter to try to get the glue to melt into the the down jacket shell that I was putting it onto, let it cool and it still would not stick.

    Did you have any trouble removing the nut for the adjustment? the one i'm working on goes to the end and them jams up. Can't get it off the stud. Also my Pittman (sector)shaft is rusted and pitted at the bottom where it goes in the seal. I polished it and then applied JB weld to the area to fill in the pits . Will sand down to where just the pits are filled with JB Weld . I don't know if it will last but right now is just an experiment. Will soak in fluid and see if it softens up or not. Who know I may end up replacing the whole gear box.

  • @steamy1225

    Yes this was very helpful . As I am about to embark on this journey of rebuilding or resealing the gear box on my 83 F100. Actually a spare one and then replace it. mine leaks bad. Anyway a good fluid to use on reassembly is ATF (auto trans fluid) as it is the fluid that Ford used in those gear boxes. Or power steering fluid is good too. Thanks.

    Did an install today. Avoided the rivnuts & was able to put the bolts in from the top. My trick was I superglued the M8 nylon nut to some large flat washers. These nut-washers weren't too hard to navigate around the airbag & into position under the 5/8" holes drilled. Once they were lined up with the hole (visible from above) then I worked in the bolt from above (used the provided M8x40 bolts with a flat & lock washer from above). Before tightening I forced some RV silicon into the holes & then torqued up the bolts.

    Good video! I’m about to install the Slimline II on my ZR2 and their install application only uses nuts and bolts no rivnuts. The instructions show installing the nut from the bottom but I’m glad I saw your tip about installing the bolt/nut in reverse.. this helps. I was also just going to put a piece of tape on the drill bit and drop the headliner before I start drilling as to physically see when the bit penetrates the steel roof.

    • @peakbaggerwolf1837
      @peakbaggerwolf1837 6 років тому

      Yeah it was definitely a lot easier to install that way. I tried for about 30 min to get it threaded and the silicone was just getting everywhere, so I cleaned it up and tried this way and was done in 3 minutes. And dropping the headliner is a good idea too. It was helpful to see where everything was and also there was a ton of metal shavings that needed to be vacuumed out. Good luck on your install!

  • @marccawley2110
    @marccawley2110 6 років тому

    As for those bolts sticking up through the top of the roof, I would just add an acorn nut on the end of each one to protect the threads as well as anything else that might potentially get damaged by rubbing up against the threads (e.g. cargo, skin..). If there aren't an excessive number of exposed threads on the end of the bolt you might also get the added benefit of the acorn acting as a jam nut (but if the nuts can't be tightened against each other you can always add some blue Loctite to the acorns). I had to do something similar on my boat transom this past summer and it worked out great. Cheers.

      There aren't any issues that I've noticed yet. When I have the cover pulled back the noise is considerably louder, which isn't that surprising, but with the cover closed it is deadened quite a bit. The glass isn't blocked too much. I would say maybe 50%. The nice thing is that the slats are removable so you could take out 2 or 3 and have the full view again. As for the picture, I couldn't figure out a way to post in the comments so just message me your email and I can send it to you.
