My wife, Bella Almendras Dial, in 1948 was only 2 years old, afflicted with polio and whooping cough. Her father, Gerardo Almendras, used to bring her to the shore of Panguil Bay to exercise her legs and absorb the ocean breeze in hope of relieving her cough. Then her father would carry her a few steps away to the Spanish Fort of Ozamis where a relief image of the Blessed Virgin Mary was claimed to have miraculously formed on the surface walls. She would be raised up by her father to touch the image of Mary on the wall. In time, she was healed and came back about 30 years later, not only to thank the "Birhen sa Cotta" but to introduce the unknown devotion of the Divine Mercy to Ozamis and the Filipino people.
