Companies used to (and still do it) because it keeps containers and paper separated. It makes it a lot easier for the sorters at the recycling facility, and it keeps contamination (mostly from food found in containers) from getting on and ruining the paper. A lot of companies have moved on from it because they've noticed their own problems with it (like the one shown in this video, this is just an old can that's still out) but cities like Milpitas and Winsor have split recycling still.

@@Josh-os4qk if you're talking about different colors of trash cans, they're all full of trash. The blue carts are from the old company and the grey ones are from the new company. If you're meaning that each can seems to have both recycling and trash in it then you're right. These apartments are rented by college students. It's where the highest amount of contamination occurs in the city. A lot of the time they think it's someone else's job to separate their waste so most of it just ends up at the landfill.

@@RecologyChaser I get it. In this vids those were just garbage and I saw lots of cans and glass bottles, plastics mixed with other trash when they are recyclable. Lack of education and laziness of Americans lol

You'd be right, Salem runs a handful of STARRs regularly and has been replacing them with 520 Durapack Rapid Rails from Heil as time continues. Jefferson likely runs some as well, I'll bet they operate from the same yard. I grew up in Salem with the STARRs, man, they made my childhood!

This truck isn't split, just an old can. However there are still split rapid rails. They're just called "co-collectors". They've got the standard padel packer but will only pack when told to by the driver. Same way a split labrie will only flip the panel when told to.

@@Omaharefuseshorts all recycling here used to be split until probably 2014 or so. Then we switched to non split trucks. Then in 2016 or 2017 they replaced most of the split lids with non split lids. They got most of the cans, but not all of them. This one is just one of the few that was left over. Thanks for the comment : )

The blue side I believe is meant for plastic/glass/aluminium and the green side is for paper/cardboard. These are old bins so you don't see them to often.

This kind of truck had a packer known as a "cp" (circle pack or continuous packer). There is always contamination but some areas have more than others.

@@roguedisposalguy long ago, when Arcata Garbage Company still existed (probably around 2009 to 2010) residents in arcata wanted a can smaller than a 32 gallon cart. So to satisfy their customers, AGC bought basically little buckets that fit, and screw into 32 gallon toters. These inserts only have a 20 gallon capacity. Nowadays, companies will just buy 20 gallon cans, but they didn't exist when these carts were bought. Have a great rest of your week too!! : )

@@roguedisposalguy trucks are slow in the morning just because it's cold and hydraulics are just slow at that time. Some trucks are worse than others. This truck is just slow to begin with but it also depends on how fast the joystick is moved around. Glad you enjoyed!! Have a great day too : )
