You should definitely start wearing that red jacket! It looks really good on you! One of my best clothing purchases was a sleeveless sheath with a matching jacket, originally prices at $120 at Macy's, but marked down to $15 because of a long streak of black grease down one sleeve. When I got it home, I treated the jacket sleeve with a good degreaser, ran it through the washer and the stain came right out. I wore the outfit to church the next Sunday and got several nice compliments on it!

Because i haven’t been buying clothes this year, i watch the show The Good Wife and going to a website called worn on tv, you can see what they wore and hiw much it cost. They spent thousands $$$ on clothes for that show! Fun to see the outrageous prices 😊

I see why that poem made you cry. It sure brought tears to my eyes and a lump to my throat. And I agree with you on why we wear what we wear. I don't care that much about what anyone other than my husband thinks about my clothes. I dress in things I like that make me feel comfortable and happy with how I think I look. I think you're right about the ridiculous size of some people's homes! I like having space to spread out, but I don't want to have to spend all my time keeping it neat and clean! My husband and I like having room to have our own spaces to get away and do our own things. We have different preferences in what we watch/listen to. He like to listen to radio talk shows and watch bluegrass and country music videos on UA-cam. I prefer to read books, work on my computer and watch UA-cam videos and TV travel shows, documentaries, and mysteries and cooking and home decorating shows. And I like having space to work on my arts and crafts.

It makes me so sad to see a house empty😢 or uncared for. I think I mentioned in one of my videos about my house in Illinois, it had been vacant for 2 years. Worst house on the block and by the time i moved out 11 years later it looked really good! It seems i like fixing things up and making them better , a new house, everything is new, you just have to keep it maintained, i like improving a house😊

Robert and I have lived in 11 apartments and houses in our 54+ years together, and have learned to always check the number, placement and working order of light switches, overhead lighting, and electrical outlets (One apartment we looked at had NO electrical outlet in the bathroom, and a light switch by the front door that didn't work.); and the water pressure and water quality at all faucets and toilets. One house we rented had no outside faucet, so we couldn't water the lawn, and we had to fill watering cans in the bathtub and carry them outside to water the flowers and plants we were allowed to put in. Also let indoor water run long enough to check that the water heater delivers hot water in a timely manner. In one house we looked at the hot water arrived quickly to the bathroom, but the hot water to the kitchen took several minutes. We didn't rent that house! If appliances are furnished with the property, check them all out to be sure they are in working order! If some appliance, water or electrical feature doesn't work, ask that it be repaired or replaced before signing on the dotted line. If your request is refused, think twice or even three times before you choose that place. Feel free to pass along this information, Valerie. 🙂

Congratulations on a successful first No-Spend Week, Valerie! That "found" $40 was an unexpected bonus! I'm so glad that worked out for you! It's great that you were able to meet your friend for lunch without breaking your "no spend" policy! And it sounds like you had a wonderful Mother's Day. There are so many no-cost things to do for entertainment and education. That family hike is a classic example! Robert and I take advantage of a lot of library programs and classes that are offered for free. Our area also has a lot of festivals and other celebrations that offer various kinds of entertainment for no cost. Since Covid we've not been able to take advantage of them, but the internet and getting out into nature fulfill our needs for entertainment and education. The top you're wearing in this video is very good looking on you, especially the color. And the price was really right! And I'm sure you are correct that your family will enjoy watching your UA-cam videos long after you are gone. My family has home movies that we can watch to bring back all those special and everyday moments and memories.

I love the pattern and colors of this top. I had a blouse with ties on the sleeves like that, and I hated them because whenever I cooked or ate, they tended to drag through my food. Finally, I untied them and measured how big the opening needed to be to get my hands through, cut off the excess length of the ties, and sewed the ends together to make an appropriate size to get my hands through and fit comfortably around my wrists and forearms. I thoroughly enjoy wearing the blouse after that. In my opinion, it looked just as good, if not better, than the way it was designed.

I think you are correct, Valerie, about finding a home that has all the space you need, but is still a size that is easy to clean and maintain. When it comes to housekeeping, I'm really lucky. My husband does at least 90 percent of the cleaning because he thinks he does it better than I do! Who am I to argue with that??? He says he likes seeing immediate results of his work. I hope your dog is making a speedy and complete recovery from whatever's ailing him! On a totally different topic, I love the beautiful blue top you're wearing in this video! It's a great color on you. I look forward to hearing your report each week on the new challenge you're doing! I think I'll try to start doing 1-3 "No Spend" days a week, just to give it a little try! Maybe a small part of not allowing women on juries was to "spare their delicate feelings," and not make them face the oftentimes distasteful, gross, and sometimes horrific facts/acts that come out in the testimony. Or maybe they worried about things women might be aware of that men didn't know about. The one time I was called for jury duty and actually questioned, I was dismissed when it came out that I volunteered in the hospital pharmacy because the case involved prescription drugs, and the defense didn't want me on the jury.

Robert asked me, "Would you wear a ring if I bought you one?" I answered, "Yes!" and he took me to a nice jewelry store. I immediately headed for the diamond rings, and we looked at half a dozen of our favorite ones. It was a tie between a rose centered with a diamond, and a ring with four cattails, two on each side holding a diamond. He had just recently given me a handful of cattails, so I said that had to be the one. We bought it, and he drove to Union Station and gave me the ring while we sat in the car in the parking lot. On our twenty-fifth anniversary we were with friends who asked how we got engaged, and I told this story and had a hard time telling it because Robert kept laughing. When I was done, I asked him what was so funny, and he said, "When I asked if you'd wear a ring if I bought one, I was thinking of a birthstone!" So now he claims that I asked HIM to marry me, and he consented by giving me the ring I chose!

I love today's top. It looks really nice on you. I can't wait to hear about your no-spend every other week challenge goes! I need to figure out something similar for myself. My big problem is that I tend to shop a lot online since we avoid going into stores as much as possible since Covid. I'm frequently getting packages delivered at home, and usually by the time they get here I've forgotten exactly what it was I ordered. So, it's always a little bit like Christmas when I get a package! I'm now working hard on trying to control my buying impulses online. I've gotten too many poorly-made things from China to trust online sellers unless the product says specifically that it was Made in the USA, and has an American address and contact phone number that I can check out before ordering! So little is actually made in the USA these days. We need to bring manufacturers back home. I am willing to pay a little more for high quality Made in the USA products!!

I'm working on downsizing my wardrobe, books (I have literally thousands), magazines, cassettes, CDs and DVDs. Next up will be kitchen items, decorative pieces, arts and crafts materials and office supplies. Then I'll move on to purses, tote bags, and odds and ends. When I talk to Robert about something I'm thinking of buying, he's quick to ask, "Is that a 'want' or a 'need'?" He's never told me NOT to buy something, but he makes sure I give it full consideration. If I REALLY want something, I go ahead and buy it, but I find it easier to pass up on things when I really give it some thought. I agree with you on the difficulty of saying "NO" to people! Since Covid started, we've avoided all social situations, so that hasn't really been an issue. We've even avoided my famiy's big get-togethers with all the kids and grandkids. We did meet twice with my sibs and their spouses at a sister's home where there was room for everyone to be spread out. That was wonderful! Robert and I are very good at noticing and appreciating the "little" things. We give each other pretty or interesting rocks and leaves, pick up pennies and other coins and paperclips, etc. whenever we find them. We look for faces and figures in the clouds. And when we take drives in the country, we count hawks and categorize them by where they were spotted: On a pole or post, on a bale, wire, fence, roof or ground, in flight, etc. Our record on a road trip from Independence, MO, home to Lyons, Kansas was 124 hawks. All my friends are on Facebook. I have four that I interact with on a daily basis, and now I also count YOU! I pray a number of times every day about all kinds of things! And I made and posted an artistic little sign for myself that says, "Breathe - Relax - Enjoy!". And, by the way, Valerie, this post was NOT too long! I really enjoyed it!!

I get my hair cut at Great Clips when they have a coupon and pay extra to have my hair washed AFTER the cut to get rid of the little bits of hair that make my head itch until they're gone. I buy cheap glasses frames but pay extra for all the bells and whistles on the lenses! I spend a lot trying different creams and lotions trying to find something to make my psoriasis more comfortable. None of the prescription meds I've tried have helped, and a number of them have had bad side effects! (I really like this top. It's very attractive on you, Valerie!) 😀

I was born with white-blond hair. Eventually, as I got older, my hair got darker until about high school it was dirty blonde. After I got married, I started dying it back to a truer blond shade. I stopped in 2000 when I got psoriasis. My hair now is dishwater blond, going grey. Style-wise, I stick with a pixie cut for ease and how the style looks on me. Our closest Savers is a 30-minute drive away, but we still have occasional business in that area, so take advantage of it when we're nearby. I love their bargains, and I give them occasional donations as I'm downsizing. I love the wardrobe you've displayed so far! Are you planning to use Patreon in the future? My husband and I eloped and spent next to nothing on it. We had gotten engaged in July and had gotten our blood tests and marriage license at that time. (The guy drawing our blood told Robert, "The down payment is cheap, but the upkeep will kill you!") In mid-October, we decided to get married during colleges' Christmas break so siblings could participate in the wedding. That's when we found out my church was already booked up for December, and his brother had plans to go skiing over break and couldn't be best man. I had turned in my resignation at work to be effective November 11, 1969, so I'd have time to concentrate on finalizing wedding plans and getting ready to move to Robert's home. On November 8, Robert had come to Kansas City (where I was based) to spend the weekend and we discussed all the issues we were having getting the wedding planned. On Sunday, we decided to drive to K-State in Manhattan, KS and have my sister, Evelyn, and her boyfriend witness our ceremony at her church there. I called her to be sure they would be free on Monday afternoon. Then I called in sick for my last scheduled flight as an airline stewardess. Monday, November 10, I followed him to Manhattan with my car. After a quick lunch, we stopped at my sister's church and asked to speak to the pastor. We told him we wanted to get married. He asked "When?" and we said, "Today." (Talk about last-minute planning! We were lucky it worked out!) He asked if we had our license, which, fortunately Robert kept in his glove box along with the wedding rings we had chosen. The pastor said, "Well, I usually meet with couples several times before I consent to marry them, but I guess we've got some time for a good talk." So, we talked about anything and everything for a couple hours, and finally he said, "Well, it sounds to me like you're a good match. Be back at four o'clock and we'll do this!" On the way to Evelyn's, we stopped at a flower shop and ordered a small bridal bouquet, bride's maid bouquet, and two boutonnieres to be picked up in an hour or so. We changed clothes at her house, while she ran back and forth between us asking us if we were sure we wanted to do it this way (knowing the way our parents might react), and we both assured her that we did. I had recently bought a camel-colored wool suit that I put on for the ceremony. Her guy picked her up and we said we'd meet them at the church. On the way there, Robert and I picked up the flowers, and realized we'd want pictures, but had no camera, so we went to a drugstore and bought a little Kodak camera and film. By that time, we were about 10-15 minutes late to our own wedding! After the brief ceremony, signing the license, and taking photos, we checked in to a local hotel and called our parents to tell them. Robert called his folks first and they were surprised but very happy for us. My Dad (a farmer) was out in the field, so I broke the news to just my Mom who shrieked and asked for details then told me to call back in an hour or two to talk to my Dad. Then we took Evelyn and her guy out for a nice supper. By the time we got back to our room, and I called home again, my Mom had called Robert's parents (whom they had never met, and whom I had met once), his local aunt, and all my area relatives and invited them to a reception dinner the next night at our local hotel restaurant where she had made all the arrangements. She'd ordered a wedding cake (from Robert's aunt who was the best baker in town!), printed napkins, and a floral centerpiece, and called the local newspaper to place a wedding announcement. This is even more impressive when you know that businesses in my hometown roll up the sidewalks at 5 p.m. (so she was calling business people at home to get this all done)! We had a wonderful reception. My Mom took Robert aside and told him that she'd raised me and knew how difficult I could be and if he ever had any issues with me, she'd be on his side. Robert's Mom told me, "That Robert! He's just like his father! If you ever have any problems with him, I'll be on your side!" When we talked about the reception later, Robert and I decided that if we ever had any problems in our marriage, he'd go home to my mother, and I'd go home to his!" Robert got along fine with my parents, and I loved his folks to pieces!! They've all been gone for decades now, and we miss them greatly!

I've found that one of the benefits of getting older (I'm 76) is that you really don't care that much any more about what people think about you and your financial situation. Hubby and I drive cars that are from the mid-1990s, and wear clothes that are years old (some of his favorite t-shirts are from 2011 and 2012. We could afford to have current things, but really don't see the need. We'd rather use our money to give to causes we care about (veterans, cats, health research, literacy, hunger/water, missions, etc.) We're fine if people who see us out in public in our old clothes and ancient cars think we're barely getting by because we know what we have and what we could have if we wanted it. I'm going to find that book and read it. It sounds inspirational and uplifting.

I LOVE Linda Ronstadt's singing ... especially her Spanish songs!! I play those frequently. I've listened to them often enough that I can sing along on most of them. I haven't danced to them. I'll have to try that.

I love the different outfits you wear for each new video. You are so right about the joy of shopping in thrift stores! Back before Covid, we used to go to thrift stores quite frequently, but we haven't been in one since then. We really need to go thrift shopping again soon, as a lot of our t-shirts are getting rather "hole-y" and raggedy looking. We drive a '90's Hyundai. We always park it in our garage. We're lucky that our area in Independence, MO isn't quite as bad as St. Louis, but it's getting worse every day. Your double ordeal was a real horror story! I'm so glad you've now got your honey of a car!! I agree with you about "assets!" Also, I really appreciate your testimony about the goodness of God! I've definitely had miracles in my life that I didn't deserve, but God gave them to me anyway.

Thank you Beverly! It was an ordeal having my car stolen. Thank you so much for the comment. I have had many Hyundai's and have always thought of them as great cars. It is something I never want to experience again. I do love thrift stores. You can get such quality. I have been doing well so far not buying anything clotheswise so far for the year. How did you find my channet? I am so new at this and have a hard time finding my channel myself!

Thanks for recommending Kay Harms, "Dressed for My Day." I'll definitely check that out! Talking about the pale pink nail polish, I've read that that is all that is worn by the women in the British Royal Family. My fingernails are short and not very attractive, so I don't want to call attention to them. I only wear clear polish on them, when I use polish. I DO polish my toenails in the summer and prefer shimmery neutral polishes. It sounds like you've had some of the world's worst houseguests!

I was a huge Diana fan. Was devastated when she passed away. I was up in the middle of the night when she and Charles got married, also William and Kate, Harry and Megyn. I know everything in Britain is understated, which I think is a really nice thing. Kay Harms channel is really wonderful and I look forward to her video every week.

Hi, Valorie! You're off to a great start. I've really enjoyed your first seven videos and look forward to seeing many more! It was nice to hear part of your life story. My husband and I both grew up on small farms in Kansas where our Dads raised wheat, corn, milo, alfalfa and soybeans, as well as milk cows (and sometimes pigs - my Dad; and sometimes chickens - Robert's Dad). After college, Robert went to work for the USDA Soil Conservation Service (now the Natural Resources Conservation Service) until he retired about 15 years ago. Because of his promotions, we lived in Stockton, Atwood, and Wellington, Kansas and in Independence, Missouri since September 1976. We both went to school at Fort Hays State College in Hays, KS (now Fort Hays University). My work history since that time includes: the college library (picking and shelving books in the stacks), The Hays Daily News (proofreader), Stockton High School (secretary), USDA SCS volunteer in Atwood, The Wellington Daily News (typesetter), The Independence Daily News (pasteup artist, to dispatcher [laid out ads arrangement for each page], to society page copywriter, to special interest/personality profile reporter); Birchwood Baptist Church (education secretary - because I am Presbyterian they teased me that there was nothing wrong with me that a little deeper water couldn't cure!), insurance agency (office manager), 13 years hospital volunteer (pharmacy, surgery waiting room attendant, and maternity ward assistant), and many years USDA NRCS volunteer (office and field work). And, starting at the hospital waiting room, entertaining as The Balloon Lady. Eventually, I was doing gigs that made me as much as $75 an hour ... completely self-taught from books and UA-cam videos ... I got paid to play!! Had to retire when I got psoriasis and parents were reluctant to have their kids accept balloons from me because it was on my hands (looked terrible), and I couldn't do the twisting while wearing gloves. I got tired of explaining that it isn't contagious. Now that we're retired, we don't know how we ever found time to go to work! We are loving our retirement! WOW! Talk about getting carried away ... I get started and forget to stop!

Wow! You have done a lot! I was a hairdresser for 10 years and I had a client that had psoriasis. It isn't contagious but like you said I doesn't look good and people I think act weird when they just don't know! i never could do anything with balloons! Thank you so much for sharing. I am so excited to be on UA-cam and I have been waiting for comments. My son says I am doing well. I am not the most computer savvy person but have been learning how to do this.

Like you, I sort my wardrobe by type (slacks/jeans, shirts/blouses, and a few vests, jackets, dresses) and color. A majority of my clothes are solid colors, with a few tops that are patterns or prints/florals. I have a collection of beautiful scarves that I wear with the solid color tops. It makes it easy to put outfits together. Like you, I love V-neck tops. I love your wardrobe that I've seen so far. I started with your most recent video and have been watching them in order back to your first one. I agree with everything I've heard you say so far! I am in awe of the way you've been able to save money and increase your income. You've gotten some amazing tips, which shows how well you serve your customers. They really LIKE you!! On a different topic, my husband Robert and I are definitely "save-y" as he calls us. When we were first married 54+ years ago, we saved as much money as we could and bought savings bonds, used coupons, and shopped in thrift stores. We are still driving our compact cars from 1996 and '97. Those taxes are low, and our gas mileage is high ... and they are easy to park because they are smaller models. When we eat out (pick up carry out since Covid), we use credit card reward gift cards, or coupons, or our AARP card for discounts. We buy a majority of our groceries at Aldi's, and we use coupons at grocery stores and drug stores. Clothes we buy at thrift stores, and shoes from Shoe Carnival when they have great coupons or special sales. (We haven't bought any shoes in several years.) We never had children, so we have saved a lot and are very comfortably well off these days, but we still save and spend the same as we did in the early days. Then it was from necessity. Now we do it as a game for fun!

I do like clothes I just won't spend an arm and a leg for them. With thrift stores you don't have to. You and your husband have been on the same page as far as money. Kids cost a lot! I have a new video coming out tomorrow morning, I think you will like it. The top I am wearing is not a thrift store find, it was from Macys , which I never go into but was shopping with my daughter-in-law's mom while we were looking for dresses for the wedding. Thank you so much for watching and tell a friend!!

I use my one credit card when ordering online, or for my super expensive prescriptions. I fully pay it off every month. I use the rewards program for gift cards to restaurants and stores that we would normally not go to. They pay for our splurges! I really appreciate my credit card company because they have caught unauthorized charges several times, notified me, and sent me new cards. I do use auto-pay, but still receive paper records of my charges each month. I use your same financial management of not buying anything that I can't immediately pay for. My Dad taught me that! He said that the only thing you should buy without the cash on hand is land. I buy my clothes at thrift stores, except for underwear (bras, panties, hose and socks) and shoes. And those, I only buy on good sales. You are right that it can be amazing what great things you can find. Several years ago I bought a beautiful silk blouse at the Salvation Army thrift store for 75 cents. I wore it to a wedding and got several compliments on it. I've still got it. Until last week, I hadn't bought any new clothes since Covid started (neither hubby (80) nor I (76) have any real immunity left, so we don't socialize, and keep people at a distance as much as possible when out in public). Anyway, last week I finally went to Kohl's and bought a couple new bras, and a set of new panties as my old ones were very worn and losing their elasticity and "holding power." I got everything at 30 percent off. It felt nice to freshen up my undies!
