The problem: Playing action just over 1/8th inch at the 12th fret, should be around 5/64th bass side and 4/64th treble, neck has pulled up since manufactured in 1974. The remedy: Using steam and a jig watch how I remove the neck on an acoustic guitar. The neck will be 're-set' to the correct angle once dried out and the guitar will be playable once more. Of course a re-fret and setup with 'sett...

Nick on bike riding around stage prior to Weather With You. Sound quality poor when song starts though, blame it on my iPhone sorry. Good improvising by Neil on piano though :) Julyan Wallis.
Before I noticed I immediately unintentionally darkened the clear coat around the backside of the bridge using a similar process.
0:28 Just the tip
any of you uses this method? what could go wrong?
This video has truly helped me. Thanks
Thank you sm
I was there for that gig, and had my phone taken off me by security!
Good job sir. I recommend you stuff the entire hole in this type of job and also cover the hole and around it to simply void excess water you need to wipe. You can even use a sheet of plastic wrap over the hole and area. It works well. But really stuff the hole with rags that will soak up any water and steam as opposed to it wandering on the bottom and sides and even top underside
Do you remove the nut first?
good and easy way.
Great
In a different video (not one of yours) a person suggested scoring around the bridge with a razor. He said doing so would make it less likely to pull finish around the bridge as its moved. What are your thoughts on his comment? Have you had any issues with sections of the finish coming off using this method? Thank you, the video is super helpful.
Jiggy camera makes it hard to watch. Recruit a tripod or friend.
Painters tape, too late when you've gouged the finish.
I can't find a bridge that fits my guitar anywhere, is it fairly commonplace that you have to form your own bridge from a blank.
If you mean the wooden bridge, unfortunately yes, if an exact one can't be found. If you mean the saddle then these are easier to make.
This totally justifies me buying an espresso machine
Where are you located? And how much would it cost to swap necks on a Martin hd-35?
Penzance, Cornwall UK.
Luckily I watched several vids before attempting this. As it's clear you made an error why not put this in your description? Anyone can make a mistake but why leave it there unnoted for novices to potentially copy.?
Should I remove the frets before I take the fingerboard off?
Watched all three and found that this is not very useful, not everyone has all the equipment you have, more trouble than its worth.
Since you were replacing it, Put a peice of parchment paper and let the iron rest and it will come off all in one
Hi enjoyed the vid I have a question for you, I'm touring Thailand on my motorbike and need a travel guitar, can't afford a furch little Jane so I'm toying with the idea of buying a cheap guitar locally and using your technique of removing the neck and then inserting bolts to make it detachable for traveling, just wondered if you think this is feasible or should I abandon the idea, bearing in mind I don't need a professional instrument ,just something to bash out a few songs, it doesn't have to look pretty, I just need something that is useable
Try a Martin Backpacker.
How deep is two holes on the 12fret should be? Just enough upto fretboard thickness or it should go all way thru neck joint(dovetail in this case)
Deep enough to soften the glue down the whole join... note how deep the steam wand goes in, in the video.
You drilled the holes in the 12th fret but I've seen other videos where they drill the holes at the 13th fret, or the first one after where the neck meets the body. Is there a reason for this difference? For my guitar, I have drilled holes at the 13th and steamed it but can't get it loose. Maybe I should try the 12th too? It is a hofner fro the 60s, so maybe it is a more difficult glue or something.
I have never done this, but the idea is to make holes so you can heat the area nearest the join to soften the glue. Understanding the type of join is the key, and making sure any bolts or screws have also been removed.
bad video
Name the Tool to remove Guitar neck.
I get the idea of thinning it with a grinder brilliant!
That was fucking knarly..... where do you het the "spatula"? great fucking video thanks!!!!
Did you cut the finish, first? If not, what prevented the lacquer (or poly) from cracking or tearing as you opened up the joint?
I felt dizzy with ur camera
Oh man this must feel like watching a beloved one having a surgery live.
Can i use elmer's glue?
sHOULD HEAT THE BRIDGE BECAUSE HEATING THE KNIFE WILL SPREAD OLD GLUE ON THE FINISH.
DriftinDoug so clean the glue off 😉
What materials used to repair
What brand of espresso machine is that?
Matt Marino make is incidental. Don’t know it stopped working a couple of years later.
@@JulyanWallis I have to do this job but dont have a coffee machine and I got thrown out of Costa Coffee LOL ....I thought a useful tool would be one of those steam wall paper strippers which boil away and I`ve put a bit of garden hosepipe on its nozzle and then a long turkey basting needle on the other end. It does seem to direct a lot of steam out of the nozzle. If your coffee machine ever breaks down this might be a good solution...lol
You are amazing
Genius...thank you
If you repair this yourself never go against the grain ever. If you do will be replacing your saddle/and or bridge very often.
Sometimes you have to go against the grain, learning how to do that properly is another thing.
So many of you people calling yourselves LUTHIERS are giving out crap information. Cover all the area around the neck end with cardboard. cover that again with a piece of crap wood or even ply. Place the domestic iron on the end of the fret board for 5-10 minutes. remove iron and simply slide the scraper under the fret board in 1 fell swoop. DONE. takes 12 minutes and saves the body from devastating scratches.
i dont understand they are not removeing the bridge the bridge sets in the saddle .so he's removeing the saddle
The saddle sits in the bridge, not the other way around.
Nice job.
Very helpful! Thank you. God bless you and yours.😁👍
Very useful thank you
How to fix the bridge again ?
Hi i never made a video for that so check another on youtube Govi sorry :-)
how did you know where along the 12th fret you need to drilll the holes?
Its always (as far as i know) at the fret where the neck joins the body, this being a guitar where the neck joins the body at the 12th fret you drill there, where most acoustics join at the 14th fret so youd drill there
You are making the holes to heat the area, not to break the join, so you are just taking your best guess at the position along the fret. And you are really just using the nearest fret to the join so you can hide the holes afterwards.
This DOESN'T harm the finish?
It does if you're not careful obviously, I've pulled hundreds of bridges and assess each one whether I need to mask off or not, this was always going to come off easily.
4/64th=2/32nd=1/16 treble side, and 1/16th+1/64 bass side = 1.15 mm. Convert to metric if u don't like math, trust me.
Julyan, here are the photos ua-cam.com/video/6SGEQTOfA4E/v-deo.html
Ok thanks, not a clue sorry, looks like it probably comes from the late 50's early 60's, thats all I can say really.
Hello Julyan, could you give me some information about the guitar? The reason I am asking is because I have a guitar with the same exact halberd (combination of ax and spear) inlays. However, it is a no name manufacturer. Not on the headstock or anywhere on the body. It does have a serial number inside, however. I have also googled "guitar with halberd inlays" and most that come up are places that sell fretboard stickers. So any information you can give about the guitar, especially where the neck came from, would be appreciated. Thanks.
Dirk o'shea photos please? Or email to julyan@guitardoctor.co.uk
You seem to know a lot and like your opinions, maybe I haven't had time until now to reply?
What would you do if there is a truss rod
Truss rod would be immediately beneath the fretboard and will lift out with same.
Tripod, tripod, tripod!
