By The Sleepy Lagoon (Desert Island Discs theme tune) - Eric Coates (Stephen Hough version)

A rough transcription I did of a beautiful performance by Stephen Hough. Known in the UK as the theme to BBC Radio 4's Desert Island Discs. It's not perfect but it was a lot of fun to do!

Days of Heaven climax
Переглядів 15 тис.16 років тому
I have re-scored a 5 minute clip from the film Days of Heaven, which in its original form contains hardly any non-diegetic music at all. It is all midi apart from the player piano near the end which is acoustic. (an orchestra would have been used but this was a student project and funds were limited.) The idea behind it was to create a separate layer, which consists of different types of "music...

I notice in April 2022 that the last entry here was three years ago. It is only within the past few weeks that Eric Coates' most popular of all his wonderful melodies "By the Sleepy Lagoon" has been played on Classic fm Radio. Although it is a piano solo by Stephen Hough and welcome, it was recorded by virtually every Orchestra of yesteryear including the London Symphony Orchestra but, like. all sensational tunes of days gone by, it drifted into oblivion. Unfortunately, we failed to pass on to following generations the genius of composers of so many fabulous tunes and we have regressed to primitive sounds. Days when BBC Radio Light Programme played all the wonderful music of the times are long gone. Coates composed "By the Sleepy Lagoon in 1930 and ten years later Jack Lawrence put lyrics to it and it swept the world as an International hit, the only one of Coates' compositions to do so. Great melodies are like great paintings, if you do not preserve them, you lose them.

This is, IMHO, the best interpretation of my favorite song!!! Such wonderful phrasing and dynamics, never losing sight of the melody. Absolutely soothing and relaxing. Exceptionally WELL DONE!!!! I'm sure Mr. Coates would also be quite laudatory!!! Perhaps you could do a video of Love Walked Right In???

Say, did you learn this just from listening to my recording? Wow--this is so impressive. It reminds me of Oliver Poole who learned Andrew Gentile's masterful piano arrangement of Leroy Anderson's Sleigh Ride before Andrew's sheet music arrangement was published and made available. You guys rock!!

yep i did hear your performance of A. Gentile's "Sleigh Ride" as well as Oliver Poole's take (by ear) on the piece "Sleigh ride". You are all so amazing! But for folks like me who need to read something to play it, I was able to purchase Sleigh Ride online. Is there a chance I can get this arrangement of "Silent Night"? I absolutely love it!
