By The Sleepy Lagoon (Desert Island Discs theme tune) - Eric Coates (Stephen Hough version)

A rough transcription I did of a beautiful performance by Stephen Hough. Known in the UK as the theme to BBC Radio 4's Desert Island Discs. It's not perfect but it was a lot of fun to do!

Volodos' transcription of Tchaikovsky's Op.54 No.10 song, Lullaby in a storm. A bit messy...

Days of Heaven climax
Переглядів 15 тис.16 років тому
I have re-scored a 5 minute clip from the film Days of Heaven, which in its original form contains hardly any non-diegetic music at all. It is all midi apart from the player piano near the end which is acoustic. (an orchestra would have been used but this was a student project and funds were limited.) The idea behind it was to create a separate layer, which consists of different types of "music...
Beautifully played!
Excellent 👍
Well played
very beautifully played
Fantastische Melodie und SEHR SCHÖNE INTERPRETATION AUF DER "PIANO".. 🙏💞❣️💌🥰
Fantastic rendition of this piece. I have listened to this many times now. Your various videos create the perfect ambiance for any dinner party that needs superior piano music. Bravo!
This is some of the best piano playing I have ever heard. Truly a master at work with his instrument.
Beautifully done, G Hale. It sounds wonderful on UA-cam and iPhone.
I notice in April 2022 that the last entry here was three years ago. It is only within the past few weeks that Eric Coates' most popular of all his wonderful melodies "By the Sleepy Lagoon" has been played on Classic fm Radio. Although it is a piano solo by Stephen Hough and welcome, it was recorded by virtually every Orchestra of yesteryear including the London Symphony Orchestra but, like. all sensational tunes of days gone by, it drifted into oblivion. Unfortunately, we failed to pass on to following generations the genius of composers of so many fabulous tunes and we have regressed to primitive sounds. Days when BBC Radio Light Programme played all the wonderful music of the times are long gone. Coates composed "By the Sleepy Lagoon in 1930 and ten years later Jack Lawrence put lyrics to it and it swept the world as an International hit, the only one of Coates' compositions to do so. Great melodies are like great paintings, if you do not preserve them, you lose them.
MY FAVORITE VOCAL VERSION IS BY VIRGINIA LEE, on the Goue Treffers channel. With appreciation for your details.
Bravo!
Fantastic, loved it. Super relaxing and great depth.
Very nice! If you like this style, I would recommend Raimond Valgre, Estonian composer from that era.
This is, IMHO, the best interpretation of my favorite song!!! Such wonderful phrasing and dynamics, never losing sight of the melody. Absolutely soothing and relaxing. Exceptionally WELL DONE!!!! I'm sure Mr. Coates would also be quite laudatory!!! Perhaps you could do a video of Love Walked Right In???
Gere hitting the water was filmed by having him dunk his head into a fish aquarium at Sissy Spacek’s home. You’re welcome.
I heard someone playing this on solo piano on R4 the other day and thought it sounded better than the programme theme version. This one is even better. Thanks
please may I ask where I obtain this beautiful transcription which is better than the Lou Singer's transcription? Thank you for this rendition, thewayup. It is almost identical to Stephen Hough's and beautifully played by you.
Don't mess with what is not broken.
Beautiful and delicate......
Outstanding performance and transcription! Might you be willing to share or sell the sheets? I'd love to have a go...
Beautiful transcription by Eric Coates -- and beautifully played by 'thewayup'. I make it one of my eight Desert Island Discs! Has thewayup some Pat Metheny / Lyle Mays connection?
Nice! Someone else decided to learn this cool arrangement 😁
Say, did you learn this just from listening to my recording? Wow--this is so impressive. It reminds me of Oliver Poole who learned Andrew Gentile's masterful piano arrangement of Leroy Anderson's Sleigh Ride before Andrew's sheet music arrangement was published and made available. You guys rock!!
yep i did hear your performance of A. Gentile's "Sleigh Ride" as well as Oliver Poole's take (by ear) on the piece "Sleigh ride". You are all so amazing! But for folks like me who need to read something to play it, I was able to purchase Sleigh Ride online. Is there a chance I can get this arrangement of "Silent Night"? I absolutely love it!
This is so beautiful! I love hearing someone else play it. You bring such tenderness and warmth to it!
Jeffrey Biegel thank you very much Jeffrey, how nice to hear this from the man himself!
any sheet music anywhere to buy? i like it!
Tompiano999 dm me :)
thewayup, how do i do that please?
@@thewayup9714 I am also interested in getting the manuscript - please let me know how to obtain it!
I can only imagine how difficult it is to transcribe and play this. Well done!
I love this piece. You play it beautifully - not quite as good as Volodos! but you have the feel of it and it moves me.
Very well done!
I agree. Charles Munch and the Boston Symphony IS the finest realization of this work. I'm not sure that this performance is the one I recall.
beautiful playing, so elegant
mmm I don't know why but some parts of the beginning remind me of he year of the cat haha
Charles Munch conducting the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Dr Munch recorded "La valse" twice with the BSO, once in the mid-1950s and again in the early 1960s -- this is the later recording.

RELENTLESS!!! a one way trip to the end of a world...
The best recording I have heard is Arthur Fiedler's Boston Pops , but this is'nt it.
Dont know but this sounds like Siébel's music from Faust !!
this sounds hard to play
Performed waayyy too fast.
@BOSOX9004 No--this version is way too fast. Bernstein/NY Philharmonic is the best
This is amazing, what players do take your inspiration from?
I thought you did a masterful job of it. (no easy task) This has got to be one of the most beautiful films of all time and some of the best film and music combinations ever. I think your music fit well.
SOY YO coño, YO soy el que manda
I enjoyed your perfomance. Bravo from one musician to another :)
This gives me chills!!!
very scary. I keep expecting the devil to jump out of youtube at the end.
this is charles munch, I have this CD
This is indeed the best "La Valse" out there. Finally... Thanks for the upload, this should be obligatory listening for everyone playing this piece!
hi, i like ur playing so much.. Do u mind sharing with me what is the character of the piece? What is the composer trying to project in the piece? what picture should i relate to when interpreting the piece? Thanks a lot!
Awesome! Ravel is one of my favorite composers. His music is so harmonically rich. Superb expression too!
Munch with the BSO Easily the greatest interpretation there is.
Your playing is wonderful hai un suono della madonna
