Kilimanjaro 2023

After much reflection I realized that Camino Del Norte is probably not going to fit into my 2023. So, I decided that a 10 day Kilimanjaro climb would my my next goal.

Hi I need some advise from SA Pelgrims plse. Anyways I can connect?
Thx for sharing this gear review. How much did it cost to check in the walking sticks on international flights?
Was for free
I watched every episode of your journey, I don't even know your name, but I feel I know you now.
Thank you for watching. My name is Andre
I have watched your journey twice. I loved it the first time and it is even better now I have booked my Camino. I hope you are well. Tony, Scotland
Well done! You are going to love your journey..
Andre: like I said below, I retraced my steps (and yours) and started from the beginning of your videos. I had an extremely similar experience as you did. Bravo my friend for capturing the raw emotions and social aspects of the Camino. I have watched many Camino videos since completing my own last summer, but yours were the most real for me. I think you and I would have clicked well had we met. My fiancé agrees (she met me at the finish line). Sadly, I too am now leaving you and your friends behind. Buen Camino
Who knows, maybe we meet on the Camino one day. Thank you dor following my journey.
It's too bad you didn't spend a day in Burgos. Loved that city. For me, part of the Camino was actually being a tourist (history buff here), so I took three days off at Pamplona, Burgos and Leon to explore. Maybe next time!
Wonderful Pyrénées! First time across, slept in Orisson, second time, having walked from Le Puy, went straight through to Roncesvalles. Dreaming of another crossing! Thank you for the happy memories!
That was a job well done. Congrats. A privilege to watch and take in your advice
Thank you kindly!
I enjoyed the woods, the trees, the shade! I stayed at the same albergue....loved it...and they made the best pizzas there.
I drank beer...every...single....day. I would never do that at home. But the thirst on the Camino is something else
The hardest part of the Camino for me was saying goodbye...especially an early goodbye. Hopefully you are still in contact with her
Yes we all still have contact
I didn't stay in Logrono...I pushed on to Navarette instead.....the heatwave forced me to divide two long days into three smaller ones
You are bringing back a lot of memories :)
Another excruciating downhill past the metal pilgrims. By this time my knees were going to kill me
I don't remember the noisy church - I guess I got lucky! Unfortunately when I arrived in Pamplona it was on a Saturday of a festival weekend and there was no place to stay anywhere - albergues, hostels and hotels. It was crazy. I had to take a taxi 10 km outside Pamplona to get a cheap hotel. The next day the taxi dropped me off at the town square. Beware of festivals in cities!
I thought the 5km downhill on that gouged rock to Zubiri was worse than the uphill climbs. My knees were hurting badly - good thing I was wearing knee braces and had a staff! The river in Zubiri was amazing and you have some good shots of it.
I mentioned in the comments of your Santiago final video that I would watch from the beginning so here I am :) I started on May 26th and went the whole way to Roncesvalles as you did. What day did you start your Camino?
I think it was 20 July 2022
Hey Camino brother. I completed mine on July 2nd of 2022, and your experiences here at the end mirrored my own. I was a mental wreck. As much as it was exciting to finish, this Camino for me was about relationships/friendships. Normally I am an introvert and of course I started solo, but by the end I had a group of friends that was extremely difficult to say goodbye to. Thanks for your honesty and emotion. Strangely enough, I watched your last video...now I am going to have to retrace mine and your steps and watch from the beginning. Cheers man...oh and I am going again this year (September this time to escape the heat waves!) Buen Camino
Where can we catch that boat at? We are coming through there in May.
I am afraid you will have to take the clues from the Video. I can not remember the exact location now. Kind of why I made the videos..😁
I have watched many videos on the Camino. I have to say there is something about yours that have moved me. I have walked sections of the Camino six times and I think you have captured the spirit and emotion of The Way so well. I saw in you a transformation from Day 1 to the final days. Well done and thank you. I am heading back to to a section in September, like you last year I walked in 42 degrees and it was a killer. Being from Ireland I am not used to that kind of weather. Many fields burst into flames and we had to make many a detour -- but hay that's the Camino. Buen Camino to you and "go raibh maith agat".
Thank you very much for your kind words.
Really enjoying your series. It's fun to see you stay at many of the same alburges as did I. I even sent a postcard to that little shop!
You are too funny!!! " I nearly died twice".
Never done a hike before so lots of good information for me. I fly out May 15/2023 to start my Camino Frances. I have bought a few things so far and glad to see you have used them also. I have the different coloured sea to summit dry sacks and cloths line. Never thought about a ventilated so I will get one of those also a dirty cloths bag. Two of my biggest dilemmas have been sleeping and wet gear. I have a sleeping bag liner and light weight sleeping bag and a rain jacket and rain pants. Lot of people said just sleeping bag liner no sleeping bag and rain jacket no pants. I guess time of year makes a difference.
For sure not waterproof pants, I had them but left them behind in the first few days. Liner is good enough as it is summer but if you are happy to sleep outdoors if need be then a full sleeping bag is obviously better. Enjoy the journey, it is amazing!
At least you Got to see it, walked it in May fog amd rain
I'm a stranger hoping to walk the camino next year. I really appreciate your honest and unpretentious presentation of your journey.
Well done, brother peregrino. Thanks for bringing us along.
Such language! Lack of finesse!
I am an African, we don't have finesse. I had to google it just to know what it is...😂
To me, this is the hardest stage of the whole camino.
oh, but so enchanting, didn't you think? Cebreiro in the rain was a bit... taxing however!
OMG, I've just finished binge watching all your videos - I'm in New Zealand.... I've been sitting 'on the fence' not making a decision about next year and walking the Camino in full. Its weird cause after watching your vid's - and your humour and honesty - you almost have a kiwi personality 😉 Time to find a new adventure and get posting new vid's. 🍺🍺🍺
Thank you, glad you enjoyed my journey. New one coming soon. Do the Camino, you won’t regret it!
That's quite an impressive watch. Outside temp distance etc. Does it show altitude? May I ask what make and model. I'm enjoying your videos.
It is a Garmin Fenix watch, yes you can set it to show altitude.
My wife did it about 7 years ago. I hope to do it in a few years when I retire. I appreciate your good energy and humility. Have fun. I look forward to following your progress.
Hi Andre, What a fabulous series of videos which I had to binge watch. Has anyone told you that you have a Daniel Craig (the last James Bond) vibe about you? Almost all the Camino videos I have watched the pilgrims seems to be grinding their way to SdC, however you had the most amazing pilgrim family. Hans what a trooper with the wrong footwear and blisters, Catherine - a delight, Ulrich the utmost human machine, so calm, always a smile. The meet up with Ulrich's wife at Leon was so special to watch. then walking alone for a while UNTIL... you joined the most fun and joyful group of pilgrims including Daniel, Conrad, Julia and the one and only Pamela who must be the only pilgrim that was bitten on her arse by a dog! On each video I tracked your progress on the maps in John Brierley's book and noted your boat trip from Boadilla to Fromista with interest and the alternative route you took to Sarria via Samos with an outdoor overnight stay. . So the keto diet was no possible but the journey was powered by cold beer! I would like your comments on what guide book/ apps did you find the most useful? What was the model of the Garmin watch did you have and would you use it again? How did you manage the money? Did you use debit/credit cards, take lots of cash and used ATMs? Once all the Covid restrictions are removed for the non vaccinated then I will be on my way and hopefully that will be before I am 80 (it is getting close!) Again, thanks for a fabulous series of videos recording such a unique and memorable experience. All the best
Hi Laura, Thank you so much for your wonderful comment. Yes, I often get the Daniel Craig comments, I have some funny stories of me in China and Taiwan when people mistook me for the actor. I never used any guidebook, the most useful app was Camino Ninja, but Ulrich showed me Komoot which was nice to use as it gave the profile for each day and you can use it during to day to know how far you still have to go. I did see some nice guidebooks which I think is worth the weight. I used a Garmin Fenix 6 watch to track all my "vitals" so to speak. I am a big fan of Garmin Watches and I have all the data now in my history which is really nice to analyse for future walks. ATM's is really a Camino rarity, I did not carry allot of cash as I found that really most places started taking cards. What I did was to use my card every now and then and pay for my friends as well and they give me the cash, that was my way of getting cash. I think I only drew 200 euros at an ATM throughout the Camino. The Camino is really an amazing experience and I will for sure do it again, everybody you see on the videos were strangers to each other at the beginning of the journey, but ended up as a close family. I hope you get to do the Camino soon, Good luck. Regards Andre
Hi Andre. Thanks for your long reply and as a result I have just bought the Garmin fenix 6 pro solar and now the challenge is to learn all its functionality. As we are all getting older every day I would highly recommend this book: Outlive: the science and art of longevity by Peter Attia. Great information and I will be upping my range of physical fitness activities to increase my longevity. Take care
it gets worse after leon
Nah, the last 10km before O’Cebreiro was ruff but otherwise nothing came close to the Pyrenees.
Nothing comes close to day one crossing the Pyrenees, and IMO the first 10km is the hardest. The guide book I used for my journey said day one was a Baptism of Fire and I have to agree. If you want to arrive in Roncevalles you have to just keep going. I can’t imagine starting the day at 5am though and regularly cursed pilgrims who shone a lamp on my bunk and rustled bags and “whispered “ at 5am. I just don’t see the point of walking in the dark. But each of our journeys is different.
Tough day, but you did it. Beautiful view well worth the hike. You got great company to motivate you. Hope you had pulpo (octopus) while you’re in Galicia, so good. Thanks for sharing your journey. Epic hike today. Buen Camino!!!
Thank you. I saw lots of the Pulpo but I am allergic so sadly never tried it.
Way so short track during the day?
I approve your choice of being a Fokker. In Dutch we have a saying “Ik ben niet gek, ik ben een vliegtuig“. I guess that's what the Meseta is doing to you. 😀
Hahaha, thx. Yeh the Meseta made me hear Mariah Carey Christmas songs in my head🤪
glad u shared your videos. anyone who watches them will want to go
Thank you.
Where did you catch the boat? I’ve enjoyed your videos thank you
Just the last 5km, did it just for fun..
I am a stranger who stumbled upon your videos. Thank you for your honesty and humour. It was an honour for me to watch your journey. ❤️
Thank you very much. 🙏
if i had any doubts about doing the camino they are now gone.
Just do it! It will change your life forever…
Happy Happy Birthday 🎉
Thank you for bringing us along. I really enjoyed your videos. I’m planning on walking the Camino from St Jean next Sept. I’m very excited to get there. Thanks again.
You will have an amazing time! Buen Camino
I have thoroughly enjoyed your journey, as a future pilgrim, I have watched a number of these, however, yours has easily been the most enjoyable. A mix of emotions, the social aspect and conclusion. Forget the air insurance business and become a travel blogger. Thank you.
Thank you so much for your wonderful comment. My love and passion is airplanes but I truly enjoyed this journey and will do it again. Who knows, I might follow your advice🤔😊
I have really been thinking about your comment! Sometimes all it takes is a few words to alter the entire course of your life.🙏
You have to have done the Camino to feel what you do on the last day, other experiences come close but not quite the same. Great following you on your way, cheers 4 sharing
What an amazing experience. We enjoyed watching your videos and seeing the friendships grow. Thanks
Fantastic!!
Thanks for posting these, I’ll be walking the same route in October & can’t wait
You will have the time of your life! Enjoy
Loved it when that stranger wished you said buen camino senor. Just so pure and open, not something you'll see in SA.
You said you booked Orisson but did you pay for it In advance? I booked it in June for September and I had to pay the full amount in advance. It said it was nonrefundable also.
I said I will pay at arrival. When I got there I canceled the booking. They did ask for advance payment but I did not do that.
I booked Orisson because I was worried that I wont make the way to Roncevalles, but I reached Orisson by 8am, better to rake the rest of the day and make the whole way. It is hard but really not that bad.
@@findingmyway4327 I don't believe I had any choice.
@@findingmyway4327 I'm sure I can make it all the way but with a history of back problems I did not want to chance it the first day out. I hear people that go all the way to Roncevalles in 1 day are really sore the next day.
@@me-lg1yw I guess it all depends on your own health.
