I have an Equity Kaleidoscope alarm clock, mine says "Hong Kong" on it and not much else. You've done a great job on the dial
@@Polysixchick Thanks!, the Equity kaleidoscope dial won a design award in 1961 but they were made for quite a while. Does yours have the earlier movement like this one, or the later design? The company behind them was called Chiap Hua,and I've probably said this already in the video but just in case I forgot
@VACC I've never opened the back but I did have it repaired, I wound it up one morning and the clock went "Bang!", the key snapped agents my thumb! I showed it to my dad who use to do clock and watch repairs and some ratchet bit had snapped. The clock is a 70s one I think, he said it was about that age, it has a black dial but no Equity logo
See you there!
I have a load of Diamond Shanghai clocks, I have the chicken, 2 panda ones, a Sylvester & Tweety Pie one, the owl, Chairman Mao (I think that ones a Diamond) and a Scooby doo one. I love animated mechanical clocks
As for what happened in the video, don’t worry too much about it. I’ll have to come back and re-watch it to get a better idea as to why that hand doesn’t feel like coming off. I’d try heating it up, honestly.
I might try that with knobs and stuff but I don't want to risk burning the dial, ideally I would get one of those hand removers
Spent my study break working on a telechron (with a power eye that didn’t wanna flip red when the power went out) and listening to you work on this. I was glancing over to see what was up, and this clock almost looks 50’s from that silver dial. I could be dead wrong on that though.
The movement and overall construction of it suggests 30s to me but I see what you mean I've never seen this kind of metallic finish on a paper dial before
“It’s not my time I’m wasting, it’s your time.”
Declare it officially wasted
🎉 (the subscribe if you want to wake up tommorow tho 😭)
"What does the clock say?" It says "OW! OW! OW!" Sorry the alarm hand was such a pit - makes me wonder whether that arbor is designed to come out with the hand on it (that'd be weird). I recall the woodworking advice of "once you've made two small mistakes, stop and take a break." Thank you again for putting up this video 'warts and all' - very instructive.
@@BradfordNeedham I suppose it could be possible to take the whole alarm arbor outwnd keeping it with the dial although it would be inconvenient. Ideally I would have some kind of dedicated tool for this but it's not usually this bad
Thanks, it worked for me. By the way I think the first watch in the video contains radium. But it is not dangerous as long as you dont consume it.
I think it does, don't worry I keep everything under control
19:31 That solder's a dead giveaway that somebody adjusted/bent that arm too often and broke it. It's a hint that "adjusting" the arm might not be the way to fix a problem with striking. I loved watching the assembly - thanks!
thanks for the shoutout man. You’ve mastered the process of filming plate re-assemblies.
This is the best thing ever

It's good to see you struggling with locating the pivots. So many people cut this important (and often frustrating) step out of their videos. Keep 'em coming - thanks!

Nice work 😃😄 cheers mate!!
Cute
I think that movement is screaming for service, thank for sharing your challenge
Hey, I've really enjoyed your posts on clocks we don't see everyone working on, the Veglia was one that comes to mind! some guy named Rex
I am looking for date of production .
Hi. I have Westclox made in Scotland , movement JK 44
Hi, is it a later single key movement? In that case it probably says "UK 44". Most of them don't have date codes, but if it's brass it's probably 1964-1967, and later if it's aluminium. What model clock is yours?
Hi, it is JK 44 aluminium . I am looking for year and model...
It is singel key movement...
@VACC I would like to send you a photo of this clock, may I have your email address please?

i love your work. i would have some watches for you. made in serbia russia and germany. greetings from Serbia
Hi thanks for watching! I don't do actual repairs for people but feel free to use my videos to help
@@VACC that's what I thought. donation for the video. I want to hear and see your opinion about domestic watches. if you are interested
@@vladinica6003 I appreciate the offer but to be honest I don't really do much of this nowadays. Thanks for the comment though

Nice work... greetings from Serbia.. cheers mate !!😄🤗
Most of my collection is animated mechanical alarm clocks, I have a "Space" Westclox with a spinning moon, I'd love a "Woody's Cafe" one, I saw one on eBay but they wanted about £90 for it!
The movement looks similar to the Chinese Diamond Shanghai one
I restored a wall clock with a type 2 “deluxe” self-starting movement, and it had that same verdigris colored oxidation on the rotor. I believe the clock had been hanging in a factory for many years, and the possibly moist environment there probably contributed to the corrosion. After cleaning, polishing, greasing, and oiling, the ~85 year old clock runs like new
I was rooting for you the whole time you were fighting the coiled spring. I can't see, but did you try turning the alarm arbor until the alarm pin dropped into that low spot in the 'skateboard ramp'? (you probably did) That might give you the leeway you need to get the pin into the other end. I assume the factory had some sort of compression clamp just for that spring. Thanks for the video - it's always good to see what other clock repairers struggle with.
Yeah, I did try but that spring was just really strong even with the alarm tripped. Thanks for watching!
9:24 Full Points for using a mainspring clamp - whee! It's a lovely clock.
Near the end of the video I can see punch marks around the mainspring pivot hole. I wonder whether someone punched the inside of that plate, without support, and bent the plate out a bit. It's a puzzler. Thanks for the video - it's heartening to see videos of others' struggles with clocks.
Yeah, I saw that too, I suppose it wore itself out at one point. Thanks for watching!
Very helpful - thank you. I have a Mark 4 which looks similar. Do you know what the two little screws at the back of the bakelite casing are for? I was wondering if the casing was in two halves ( i.e. a flat disc at the back and the sides) attached by the screws.
The bakelite casing (on the mark V at least) is one piece, the only way in is from the front where the dial is. I think those 2 bolts are there to hold the unit in the shroud (in my case, the chrome case), but in other cases they probably hold the movement inside extra secure
I have the chicken and panda clocks, made by Diamond, I love them, I have a Seven Star chicken clock as well. I have a Chairman Mao clock too with a woman waving her red book and a jet going round as the second hand. It has that Chinese movement but I don't know the brand
Those are cool, all the Mao clocks I've seen are Double Rhomb brand
There were lots of brands that used that mechanism: Diamond Tic-Tac Season Seven Star Five Rams/Fairy Ram Double Rhomb Helm Zeon Hero Polaris Golden Cock/Rooster/Tone Xisen Knight Maxim Lico Ross plus many others I'm sure. I have 5 Diamond brand ones, a Double Rhomb one and a 60s Chairman Mao one but I don't know the brand
Interesting video...did you do a follow-up showing the cleaning and reassembly of this clock? I have a Ferranti mantel clock that has a very similar mains-powered mechanism which has become unreliable presumably because it is so dirty.
@@emitterfollower ua-cam.com/video/ZlGurxrlgKA/v-deo.htmlsi=1g_evgKeMNqoov8l. Hi the whole series is on my channel. I cleaned it with isopropyl alcohol, make sure you clean out the worm gears and pivot holes
It would be great to make a video on how to fit the spring in there!!!!
It would be great to make a video on how to fit the spring in there!!!!!
Dont hworry it wasnt yer fault<3
It was a Jewish German company who moved their business to the uk.
Do you know when the clock container was switched to plastic? I'm trying to date my Model 11038 Baby Ben without pulling the hands and face. The container is held together with 3 nuts, and the adjustment knobs are steel without holes in them. I'm guessing it's from the early to mid 70s. I also had an orange alarm clock as a child, I'm hoping my mum still has it in her messy house.
The gong needs tuning. It sounds like hitting pots and pans.
I've got a john D francis alarm clock that I can't find on the Internet seems unusual wondering if its one of the first produced . It has a wooden base and the face surround is attatched by little metal pipes on one side ..... Wonder if you can help identify for me. I will post picture tomorrow. Great video thank you

Im currently working on a virtually identical movement. Its got almost exactly the same issues too! To get the pin out, i bought a 0.4mm staking punch, spent ages getting it set up in my staking set and then gave it some percussive maintenence to push the old pin stub out. I had to do the same to the regulator as there was nothing there to interact with the hair spring. That got harvested from my stash of alarm clock parts and soldered in. To the washer you said you might replace with a spring - mine had a spring washer there. It was still loose, and pushing the brass collar up tight against it seems to have sorted it. Its got similar wear on the centre pinion, but that doesnt seem to be stopping it running. Ive had to straighten the hairnspring, and currently just trying to get the thing to run for more than a few seconds without the pallet fork catching on the pin on the escape wheel.
