3dlabprint Switchblade 3D printed jet with Xicoy X45 turbine
This is a 3D printed jet from 3DLabprint (3DLab gang) modified from EDF to Xicoy X45 turbine. It is printed out of PLA-LW with a 2k epoxy coating. The airframe has lots of carbon reinforcements and the fuselage is very strong. This plane crashed after I made an error and is currently being re-printed as the internals were unharmed. That's the joy of 3D printing: Just make a new one!

Wanted to share my great summer evening, despite the bad quality movie you can watch how fast and great-sounding this plane is! This is my “German camo” Freewing T-33 equipped with the superb Xicoy X-45 gas turbine. A 4,5kg turbine on a 3,7kg plane = FUN. Fully grass capable but be careful with the nose retract.
Freewing Gripen turbine conversion how-to
Quick how-to convert a standard ARF Freewing JAS-39 Gripen into a turbine model using the awesome Xicoy X45 miniature turbine. This model is certainly not for beginners as it is very fast and super agile. You can build a model like this for about €2500,- all-in, providing you already have a good quality 8ch Transmitter and receiver.

Sorry about the blurry bit, cameraman was just as nervous as me. This is a Freewing Saab JAS39 Gripen, modified for a Xicoy X45 micro turbine. The thrust pipe is double-walled and made by Paul Appelbaum from the US. Tank is based on an HDPE 850mL french fries-sauce flask. Aluminum UAT by Intairco. The model is extremely fast at 88cm wingspan, 3780gr fully fuelled weight and over 4,5kg thrust. I...
Freewing Avanti S with Xicoy X45 turbine first start

Very first start of the tiny X45 in my Freewing Avanti S. This is by far the easiest and trouble-free turbine I ever saw. Only thing you need to do is learn the ECU the TX min-max, and flow all air out of the system by means of the prime function in the very cute “mini dash”. By letting the turbine stay at a certain throttle setpoint it will auto-adjust its mixture.

After a year of not flying the SlowPoke I needed to get used to it again. So a bit boring video this time (not so boring if you are flying it I can assure you!). Accidently the banking limit was switched on on the Arkbird Tiny GPS unit so no upside down flying possible this time. The Arkbird GPS will make the plane circle the field at 30m in case it loses TX signal and I can switch it to this "...

Was soll das wackeln?
Can this build just using a pla+ fillament only?
The original design is for PLA-LW with some parts in PLA for strength.
can i build this with PLA+ fillament only?@@marcovandevelde
I don’t know mate, pls contact the author of the Switchblade design
Really great! Never tought that a turbine would fit in the switchblade. Well done :)
Fitting the turbine was the easy part. Fitting the 1L tank was more difficult. I modified the STLs to make space for it. Also modified STLs of the cover to accommodate the “cheater” vents on top.
Could you please tell me what size tank you used and how many minutes of flight time you are getting? Thanks!
Tank size is 1.2 litre. The X45 uses about 100mL/min at max throttle. In real life 10 min flights with adequate reserve are usual.
Could you please tell me what size tank you used and how many minutes of flight time you are getting? Thanks!
Hi Marco, what Fbl control unit did you use? Vstabi, beastx, other? thank you Luca
Hi Luca, I used a BeastX in this video. Later on I replaced the Raptor mech with a Trex600 (beltdrive tail) which made it work much better with the 5-blade head and BeastX.
Thank you Marco! Awesome model. I got one with a titan 50 and now i m converting it in Ep.
Hi Marco, is possible receive any pics of your ep conversion with a TREX 600e? so i can check how it is your very nice job. it is a big help. Please let me know. i'd want to do the same thing and fit a penta blades head. Thank you.
Can i ask your opinion? I have a plan put a turbo in Ninja 250 FI, using a bosch external fuel pump as scavenge pump, is it good?
Hello ,I know this is an old post but how did you wire it.
Yes it's an old post but still going strong! I have wired the Facet pump directly to the battery by means of a separate fuse and a relay. The relay gets switched on by the ignition barrel. I'm currently looking at fitting a delayed-off relay so the pump goes on for say another 10 seconds after the ignition key was turned off. This is specifically for my oil-return reservoir that sometimes overflows after stopping the engine.
so nice of this friend
Marco, great job! Question, where did you get the lights? Peace from California!😎
Thanks David, the brand is URUAV and they are offered in different sets and at places like Amazon. Be sure to order them in a set with the little charging unit. The cheaper offers are just the lights.
Cross wind takeoff ........Brave for a maiden...!!
Thanks, we often fly from an airbase taxi strip so used to sidewind take-offs
take the FMS 80 Inrunner EDF 8S with 5 KG Trust....its the same...and much cheaper....of course for me :)
A good solution if you only look at thrust. But the Gripen already has difficulty with the CG by fitting a 6S5000mAh lipo. An 8S would make it nose heavy, thus hard to take-off. And the total take-off weight would be a lot higher still. Mine gets lighter the longer I fly, and easy 6-8 mins flying time. For me, turbine wins always.
@@marcovandevelde i put an FMS Inrunner Pro with 3,5 KG Trust on my Mig21 for handlaunch...everything is possible...got flights.... ua-cam.com/video/6an2BGaAL7w/v-deo.html

Castle 10A BEC, Freewing A3-L gyro in delta-config on main wing only
Did you use the recommended CG?
No, marking 15mm to the back, so a bit more tail heavy.
Marco, great vid! How did you program the stabilizer? I have flown my X-45 powered Gripen twice now and not very stable.
Simply set as “Delta wing” and use it only on the main wing. I have a knob on the transmitter to set the gain as I go.
Mooi Marco👌👌
whats the flying weight at this configuration? slow landing speed
Hi, could you share the plans, I want to make the same one but I don't know how to distribute the power
I would be afraid to stand so close to these rotating parts.
Well he knows what he is doing. But I can assure you that we all were quickly stepping back because of the sheer noise and violence
47G not 46.
Very nice small jet and nice flying ! Do you think the new Ares Mini would be ble to take off from similar grass airfield with the same turbine ?
According to specs the Ares mini is suitable for 45N+ turbines, and will weigh 4,7kg without fuel. The Avanti weighs less than 4kg fully fuelled so will be capable of unlimited verticals straight away. Then the wheels of the Ares seem very small. My grass flying field is so rough even the big wheels and long travel landing gear are suffering. In conclusion, the Ares will not perform the same. Lovely plane though! I’d fit the Xicoy X90 to this if it were mine…
@@marcovandevelde Thank you Marco !

Ben benieuwd!

Awesome setup and nice flight! Oh my...are those huge piles of poop on the grass field?
Hi Mike, those piles are provided by a family of moles that likes to mess up our strip instead of ripping the neighboring fields apart
Mooi hoor💪💪
Did you upgrade any of the servos or just keep them stock
Everything is stock, except for the Castle 10A BEC. The Avanti is a very strong plane
That’s awesome and good to know
@@thehanger3436 Only thing I added (also on the stock Avanti) was a little HobbyEagle A3-L gyro. The Avanti doesn't really need it, but it will then make landing-approaches like it's on rails.
very nice, maybe more info about fuel tank and pipe version/install? thnx a lot and happy flying
The custom made epoxy tank and double-walled pipe can be ordered through Paul Appelbaum on Pkappelbaum@sbcglobal.net See his conversion yt videos on how-to. There is no heat shielding necessary anywhere at all in this foam model.
Heerlijk dat geluid
Mooi hoor, have fun👌👌
He leuk!
Hi - what is your problem with this heli that you have to shake it ? Other identical Alouettes do not show this problem. Could you solve it ? 01:48 Your tail rotor definately needs to be balanced - nearly all Alouettes need this "service". This brief shaking during spooling up may look harmless, but the tail rotor ball bearings are really suffering ! Imagine what happens, if one of these would jam during flight ...
The guy in the movie is an expert pilot that thought the shaking would help. I’ve never repeated this myself and has proven unneccesary. I’ve changed the main rotor to 3-blade and switched rhe tail rotor to the right side. Tail rotor is perfectly balanced and I’be flown many times since.
Hi - from where did you get these nice looking cockpit seats ? My Vario Alouette still needs a pair !
The cockpit was partially built when I got it. As far as I know they are the standard Vario ones, but covered in linnen fabric from a carrier bag
@@marcovandevelde Thanks very much and have a great Christmas time !
i would love to know how you did this.
brian dewsbury Well the Moskito can be built to turn CW or CCW. So you build one of each then connect them with the original tailbelt. The mixing was done fully mechanical with a separate gyro for nick, roll, tail functions.
Marco van de Velde hi,thank you for sharing that.
Mooie vlucht.👌
I have a question about your Thundertiger Mi-24 Hind,Is there any electric helicopter for this fuselage ?
Has nothing to do with the F/A-18 but hey I'll answer. If you have the complete ThunderTiger Hind fuselage kit, then you also have the short belt drive for the high tailrotor. Then any Thundertiger tailbelt driven mech will fit as they have the same pitch toothed belt drive. Types like the Raptor 550e are well known to be used. Ofcourse an electrified Raptor50 will work too. In any case you'll need the Raptor50 length taildrive belt. I fitted an early type Align Trex 600 as they too came with belt drive in the same pitch but a little narrower. I found this works very well. And clones like the HK600 will ofcourse also work well. What ever you fit in there DON'T use the stupid Z-drive system that goes with the kit. A direct drive will work lots better.
Dear Marco, I set up a Moskito XXL just in May 2020, which I havn't used for 10 years. Carb had to be cleand by heat pistol an ultrasonic. The adjustment of the carb took two days, but now it's flying like a charm. Is your Moskito still flying?
Hi Ortwin, nice to hear from you. Yes the Moskito is still alive but I have worn bearings in the engine so currently not ready to fly. Also I have changed the long exhaust for the muffler"pot" that the Moskito came with. Also still working on the TwinMoskito tandemheli, see other vid. ua-cam.com/video/yA75uK4GLSs/v-deo.html
Ga eerst jouw opzet uitwerken. Groet, JW
This pump has enough flow to keep up with the oil? What viscosity oil are you running and is your turbo Journal bearing?
Elliot Yes the pump has more than enough to handle the oilfliow. I run standard GSXR1100 oil and it is a plain bearing turbo. TD05L-16G if I’m correct. There is a restrictor in the turbo oil supply.
Restrictor? Why would you have to do that? Does that affect bearing life? @@marcovandevelde
@@drabfab3014Because the turbo needs one to stop over-oiling the bearings and the engine needs sufficient oil aswell
This is great! I had thought a low pressure electric fuel pump would work well as a turbo scavenge pump, but not much info around. Still working well? I’ll have to give it a go!
Mansel it still works, pumping hot frothy turbo oil back into the sump. I never had any issues. May relocate it as it limits ground clearance in corners.
Marco van de Velde Thank you indeed, glad it’s still working, this will be put to use in my next project. Cheers, have a nice day!
Am i seeing correctly? Are you using both an electric and mechanical scavenge pumps??? Thinking of going with that combination to aide the electrical one.
stunter956 No, it’s electric pump only. I just used the empty mechanical pump housing as a temporary sump return point
