Episode 11, Cleaning Sprinter Bosch fuel injectors
The van still had starting problems when cold, even after the engine was serviced, fuel lines replaced, and high-pressure pump seals changed. The injectors were removed from the engine, disassembled, and cleaned in an ultrasonic cleaner. After that, they were tested, and now the engine runs perfectly.

Oh hi. So yours has a mechanical fuel pump. They are more bombproof and shouldn't have as many problems because they are much simpler. 👌 Thank you. I still have a lot to post here; I have been editing today, so maybe next week I will upload another video. Enjoy 🙏 And if you have any questions, I would be happy to help you.
@Timosgarage85 ok Bro,thanks a lot for your help
15:43 nice job! i was trying to do the same but i have troubles with releasing the twelve point nut. how powerful impach gun did you use or is there another trick?
It has to be an impact, because it will flex if you use a lever. The impact gun I use is a Milwaukee that has a maximum torque of 1356 Nm.
@Timosgarage85 tnx for info and quick response. I will try again with my impact. According to the specs, it should work, although i did not have any luck so far.
@luciusveracius Spray WD-40 on the nut and threads and let it sit for a few minutes. Maybe it will help.👌
I hope you put a new copper washer on the bottom of the injector. You didn’t mention it I think.
Oh, of course, I did. The old ones get always squished. The bottom of the injector holes were in perfect condition, so I used original-thickness copper spacers.
Dunning-kruger effect is strong here.
The old T1Ns still look great.
Thank you! Will look great when I get the bodywork done, painted, fender flares, a spertire in back, big new wheels, and get the engine tuned to 190 hp.😄
Is engine 2.7?
@IoIo-qu2vk no that’s the 2.2
@IoIo-qu2vk It's a straight 4; it's actually not so different from a straight 5. They do shear many parts. I do have the streight 5 in my dually
I had assumed rebuilding an injector was a massive undertaking, only to be tackled by expensive specialty shops. Thank you for documenting the process!
Well, it was not so difficult, just need to be careful because it contains lots of small parts. Keep them always clean and lubricated with diesel. As the diesel shop recommended, it would be always good to replace the head nuts of the injectors. Because I wanted to be 100% sure that they worked, I took them to be tested. Two of them were leaking. This is why it smoked and had a long crank start because it leaked the needed pressure from the fuel rail. The test and 2 nut change cost me 240€. Now it works perfectly. Starts right away😄
I would recommend sending them to a professional shop that has the skills and tools. Just wanted to show that if it's an emergency and the shop is far away, it is possible to clean it yourself.👌
Great Work!
🖐️🇰🇬
Hi Timo Great work man! i have an 07 sprinter which is going to need a lot of panels cut out, this has really helped me! what is the we tool you use for putting offset in the sheet metal? thanks
Well, you can make the holes for spot welding and then flip the head to make the offset step for welding. It's called a "hole punch seamer". www.biltema.fi/en-fi/tools/hand-tools/pliers/special-pliers/combined-hole-punch-and-seamer-2000019446
@@Timosgarage85 thank you!
I noticed that when you installed new back bottom piece you overlap the old and new and spot weld. Did you bend offset so it's on same level because you did for the front panel.
@JJ-ut5iv Oh, sorry, I misread it. No, I don't; it would be more precise if I could, but the shape is complicated to bend a small 1 mm step into it. That small overlap will not affect the seals or panel gaps. Also, when installing the skin sheet on the front side, that small change will not pull it so much inside that it would be visually noticeable.
That's still a good point you pointed out. Later I will smooth it out with filler, prime it with 2K primer, add body sealer on the back of the door edges where the skin was wrapped over the back panel, and then paint it all.
Top intro!
@@KatzederHund Thanks🙏😄
Cool!!! I will need lower aft.... Just under the plastic planc with 2 holes of spare tyre
The rear panel behind bumper? I changed that on my other sprinter😄
Hello friend can you help me with this sprinter w901 311 4x4. I bought it from a guy , it can’t engage 4x4 inside the cabin , i press the switch nothing happen, could you recomend check what wrong with it ? Thank you so much friend
@nhungoc3570 Hi, first I would check the fuses. After that, the vacuum line from under the brake reservoir to the solenoid under the car that its not dissconected or leaking. Do any of the light turn on the button when press 4x4 on?
@ it does not has any light on when i press the button, nothing happend
@ where is the 4x4 fuses where it locate friend
@nhungoc3570 I have to check, maybe under the driver's seat. If no lights come on or blink, then check that the plug behind the 4x4 lock switch is not disconnected. I have seen some cars where the plug was off.
@@Timosgarage85 the swith is connected not fall off. I think it is a bigger problems
You done a great job 👌 👍
Very nice proper professional work 👍👍👍
@MrNdz71 Thank you. I am learning all the time and getting more tools to work efficiently. But I do not yet see myself as a professional. 😄
I was told that on 906 the front subframes are the same with addition of spacers for 4x4, and also that front hubs from 2wd can be easily modified for shock absorber location and that they will take the axles once shock goes up? Any truth in this? Thanks
@samsonacc8081 I just checked; it seems like the steering knuckle/hub is very different because it has to be able to take a driveshaft to the hub. They are different. About the subframe, I'm not 100% sure if it's welded from the factory with a spacer or if it is added afterward. They usually want to weld it so they have fewer parts sandwiched together to ensure it's more rigid.
Yeah I had my doubts about knuckles. Thanks buddy, I appreciate you checking that👍
Hey Timo, again, really enjoyed the progress. There are drills for spotwelds, those are super handy! Keep up the good work - maybe add a small intro <3
@@KatzederHund yes, my father just told me today, he watched the wideo and sayd that can give me some. Also balm hammers, to work with the metall😄. Thank you🙏
wouldn't it be cheaper to buy a new door?
@@cotin18 parts where like 26+24€. New door...hmmm 683-730€ was for a high model van , low model van doors are rare, so may be 900-1000€
And I would have needed both rear doors, a side door, and both front doors. If each new one costs €600-1000, it would have been an expensive build. It is difficult to find rust-free spare doors, and if you do find them, they still ask a lot of money.😄
And it's much more fun rebuilding them than buying new ones 😂👍
@martincraig-je4vo Well, yeah, get more experience😄, and fear less to try. It feels great if you manage to fix something instead of just buying a new part.🙏
Un grande lavoro ,quanto dureranno i lamierati nuovi senza alcuna protezione interna ?
@@tonigugliotta1792 i will paint them from inside and outside with 2 compond primer and after that use gravitywax spray inside the doors. Should last fot years
dont you have a scrapyard there for a good secondhand door ? it wouldt be much easyer.
They are usualy very expencive of you find a door that does not have any rust damage. Even damaged doors are pricy. Maybe in germany could be cheeper, postage still costs something.. the parts that i used cost me 19+28€ + my own time to swap( took like 5h)😄
50k later, can't believe how cheap there made ,looks new🎉
You mean mercedes is made cheep or the parts?😄 and thank you. The replacement panels are cheep here, you can get them galvanized, or even thicker then the original. When i get all panels and welding work done, will paint them from in and outside with 2 compond primer and use gravityfax inside the doors and body. Then it should last for years😄. The original paint that mercedes had on sprinter is extreemly thin😂... i will paint the whole van over with 2 compond paint. It should be 3-4 times thicker👌

Great Video again! Love to see the progress.. Have a look under the plastic cover of the footstep - might be rusted too.. Merry Christmas!
@KatzederHund Thank you, yes, I will get there. 😄 On other sprinter, they were rotten; I need to clean and make a bigger hole for water to drain.
Nice one! finally got around to do this on my 4x4 sprinter today after seeing your video. Thank you from Norway! Had the exact same problem, both wires to that connector was torn off. Have had to doble-press the remote for 2 years to lock all the doors with remote, or lock twice with the door lock (thats the trick to locking them even without some doors being connected). Also the back door hinge seems to make it so its not always connecting the points of contact causing the central locking to only lock on double-press. Did this for soldering: stripped the copper wires, splitt the strands in two and twisted the strands a little together to make distance on the insulated cable side, before twisting them around the pole, then flux added and solder was added. Made a solid connection. Not needing cable lugs.
oh, there was a part number on it, witch one was broken, the upper or lower? which i would have had checked them 1st with multimeter :D
Nice one. It's interesting to see the similarities and differences in 4x4 technology between different manufacturers. For example Toyota tend (tended?) to put the front disks on the inner side of the front hub frange so you have to take the hub off to change the disks and their wheels tend to be on studs rather than bolts. That said all these mostly share similar ways of working. When chasing down vibrations I've sometimes used a phone app or similar to log the rate then worked out whether this is at engine speed, gear / transmission speed or wheel speed. This is sometimes useful when the vibration is obvious, but its location is not. Glad you sorted and figured this might be prop shaft balance / alignment without more involved work. Can you grease the prop shaft spiders on your van? This might help if they are tight.
@stco2426 Thank you, yes, you are right. No, they unfortunately do not have grease nipples. They do last long. On my first Strinter, the rear axle joint went bad. I did get a spare cross for the rear, but they do not have any C-clips/locks holding the universal joint cups in; they are just locked in by squeezing the metal to deform, so it keeps it in place. Mercedes wants you to replace the whole driveshaft. Here are companies here who may swap the joints and balance the shaft.
Nice job Timo. I just got the seals for the transfer case. I thaught you need to take the whole case down to service it! but yeah this is pretty self explanatory :) Can you just tell me what size is the special key to open the axle heads from the transfer case! thanks!
Hi Sorin, yes, it was easy. This is why I made the videos to show that the work is not so complicated, and people will not be scared to do this.😊, i think the socket was 32mm for the frontaxle nut and 30mm for the ones on the transfare case.
<3
Ill check my factory markings aswell, hope thats the cause of my vibrations too... Lucky for you its solved!
@KatzederHund Yes, it came to mind to check because the previous owner told me that he had the clutch and flywheel replaced. So, whoever removed them never checked the markings.
You can move the ABS ring from the old knuckle to the new. Just carefully knock it off the old knuckle.
@dardanjo Yes, if the outer diameter had been the same size. Heat could have removed the ABS ring. Later, I checked that these front drive axles were meant for W901 models that did not have ABS. The outside bodies looked slightly different. I did not measure the bodies; maybe they would have been the same size. Luckily, the balls and internals were the same size.
To losen the net chisel and hammer is fine. To tighten it correctly you need the Merc tool. Its only 50€ though. As far as I know the drive shafts never have the ABS rings installed. You need to take your old ones off or order them seperately.
Really? As far as I know, you should tighten the wheel bearing nut to 200 Nm and then 120 degrees. For a 50, it would not be so bad. Hmm, about the driveshaft ABS ring. Autodoc also sells them with the ABS ring. Well, you could maybe heat it up and remove it that way. Autodoc also sells complete driveshafts.
Could you throw s link where you found it so cheep?
@@Timosgarage85 and how did you manage the 200nm plus 120 degrees with the chisel? 😅
@rgbgfabian2 I didn't 😂 I took a 36mm socket, grinded the head so it had exactly 4 tabs that matched the nut 😄. Used it to tighten and then loosened it a little bit. Well, I could actually do the same without. Just remember not to tighten it too much that it starts to bind, and loosen it a little bit, because when the bearing warms up when driving it has some room to expand 😄👌 just that i broke the socket that i made, just incase would be good to have a original one😂

@@wohnungsfrei yeah i think so. Im not sure will i post on next or after that a video where i change the seals on transfarecase and also rebuild my front driveshafts, just need time to get them edited.
What problems you have? Noisy bearings, chain or leaking?
@@Timosgarage85 My transfer case is causing vibrations and rattling. The dealer had lied to me about accident damage (the vehicle had hit the ground). translated with Google
Did you fill up the diesel filter with diesel before starting it? Mine wouldn’t start until I put some diesel in the filter first. Afterwards I read that if you crank it too long without it starting you can ruin your high pressure fuel pump cause it’s running without lubrication(diesel) for too long.
@rgbgfabian2 Yes, I did. That was an important step, but I didn't show it in the video. When left empty, it would take forever to bleed the air out.
I like the T1N short vans but now I must have a short 4 wheel drive with manual transmission the only problem is rust I guess .. now the question is how much and how much to import to US ??? Thanks for showing
Haha 😄 yeah, the short models are good for off-roading. Because they are rare, the prices for them are high and seem to be even rising. I paid €5800 for mine, which is extremely low! While the owner was selling it for €7000, I'm not selling mine because I got it as a project van. The lowest I have seen in my country was €9900, and even one for €14000 was sold quickly. I recommend looking at www.Mobile.de. There are some for sale, and maybe you can find one with a low-range gear transfer case.
What country are you in? Are you able to find 4x4 sprinter vans there in good condition? Thanks!

Very interesting and a cool garage. Surprised how basic the 'lift' on the 4x4 one is and now I know when I see these on the road. Basic, but it must work just fine. I don't think the 4x4 has a low ratio in the transfer box, but otherwise pretty capable. Thanks for sharing!
@stco2426 Yeah, mine doesn't have it. I was looking for one with low range. But because they are so rare, and this one came up with some "problems," it was the best opportunity to negotiate the price and get it. I think it's the zg3 transfer case that has low range.
Hi, you used 400 grid sandpaper and it didnt leave any visiblen scratches after finish? what type of clear coat did you use on them? I have a 4x4 316 with yellow eyes😅😅
@happyviking8888 Well, actually used 350 and then 400. It's a car dual-component clear coat. I asked Uno what brand it was.😄 and no, no scratch marks. Have done that way on atleast 9 cars as i remember. Oldest now 6 years and still same bright👌
Do you think converting a normal version to 4x4 version is possible? Or too expensive to try it? Thanks!
@alai It is possible. You need to change the front subframe, add blocks between the rear leaf springs and axle, and get front hubs, driveshafts, and so on. You will also need a different fuel tank and all the vacuum actuators. You may even need to program the ECU to shut off the ABS and traction control. If you can get a rusted-out 4x4 or a crashed one to take parts from, I'm sure it would be possible. I was thinking to convert my 416cdi 4x4 before i did not have the 313cdi

@JJ-ut5iv Yeah, I saw your post on Facebook. It would be cool to have a Torsen differential. I forgot to mention that. On the 416 CDI, the differential lock can be engaged even at speeds like 60-80 km/h. In 4x4, it will disengage the rear differential lock if speeds go above 50 km/h.
