What changes did Mercedes make to the 4x4 Sprinter?

Upon request, I made a video to show how Mercedes converted the T1N (W903) Sprinter into a 4x4. Unfortunately, I did not have a chance to compare it to a normal Sprinter, so I had to compare it to a dually. Clean machine!
@kodiak4240 Well, honestly, at the moment, all the doors are rusty, but I'm working on it. I have all the new body panels ready. Maybe this weekend, I'll finally have time to start welding.👌 but thank you😊
Can you re-store a ZG3? Best regards
@@wohnungsfrei yeah i think so. Im not sure will i post on next or after that a video where i change the seals on transfarecase and also rebuild my front driveshafts, just need time to get them edited.
What problems you have? Noisy bearings, chain or leaking?
@@Timosgarage85 My transfer case is causing vibrations and rattling. The dealer had lied to me about accident damage (the vehicle had hit the ground). translated with Google
Did you fill up the diesel filter with diesel before starting it? Mine wouldn’t start until I put some diesel in the filter first. Afterwards I read that if you crank it too long without it starting you can ruin your high pressure fuel pump cause it’s running without lubrication(diesel) for too long.
@rgbgfabian2 Yes, I did. That was an important step, but I didn't show it in the video. When left empty, it would take forever to bleed the air out.
I like the T1N short vans but now I must have a short 4 wheel drive with manual transmission the only problem is rust I guess .. now the question is how much and how much to import to US ??? Thanks for showing
Haha 😄 yeah, the short models are good for off-roading. Because they are rare, the prices for them are high and seem to be even rising. I paid €5800 for mine, which is extremely low! While the owner was selling it for €7000, I'm not selling mine because I got it as a project van. The lowest I have seen in my country was €9900, and even one for €14000 was sold quickly. I recommend looking at www.Mobile.de. There are some for sale, and maybe you can find one with a low-range gear transfer case.
What country are you in? Are you able to find 4x4 sprinter vans there in good condition? Thanks!
@@noah786 i'm in Finland. 4x4 sprinters here are very rare and prices are high and feels like the prices just keep rising on them.
Now I want to import one to the US
thisone has lowrange transfarecase and rear locker suchen.mobile.de/fahrzeuge/details.html?id=407922488&dam=false&fe=FOUR_WHEEL_DRIVE&isSearchRequest=true&ms=17200%3B116%3B%3B&od=up&ref=srp&refId=a3f1f562-81db-78f0-2592-26a2b0b8947a&s=Car&sb=p&searchId=a3f1f562-81db-78f0-2592-26a2b0b8947a&vc=Car
Very interesting and a cool garage. Surprised how basic the 'lift' on the 4x4 one is and now I know when I see these on the road. Basic, but it must work just fine. I don't think the 4x4 has a low ratio in the transfer box, but otherwise pretty capable. Thanks for sharing!
@stco2426 Yeah, mine doesn't have it. I was looking for one with low range. But because they are so rare, and this one came up with some "problems," it was the best opportunity to negotiate the price and get it. I think it's the zg3 transfer case that has low range.
Hi, you used 400 grid sandpaper and it didnt leave any visiblen scratches after finish? what type of clear coat did you use on them? I have a 4x4 316 with yellow eyes😅😅
@happyviking8888 Well, actually used 350 and then 400. It's a car dual-component clear coat. I asked Uno what brand it was.😄 and no, no scratch marks. Have done that way on atleast 9 cars as i remember. Oldest now 6 years and still same bright👌
Do you think converting a normal version to 4x4 version is possible? Or too expensive to try it? Thanks!
@alai It is possible. You need to change the front subframe, add blocks between the rear leaf springs and axle, and get front hubs, driveshafts, and so on. You will also need a different fuel tank and all the vacuum actuators. You may even need to program the ECU to shut off the ABS and traction control. If you can get a rusted-out 4x4 or a crashed one to take parts from, I'm sure it would be possible. I was thinking to convert my 416cdi 4x4 before i did not have the 313cdi
Do not copy the MB.... put an axle under it like DANA 60 - 70 and the same i rear.
@@rvarsigfusson6163 sorry, i didn't understand this 🙃
@@alai Just put some 60 - 70 Dana Spicer USA made axle under your Sprinter. Do not think of using the original Benz system. If you can buy 4x4 Sprinter then all good but other ways try to use real things as many others have been doing in many years.......
@@alai facebook.com/share/p/14eoD8QF14/ Here is one guy selling hes as doonor van, has all the 4x4 parts on it
Keep on doing Videos please! So calm and interesting! <3
You're comparing the two vans you have in front of you. There are more variations in different models and also at the same time more identical parts. I converted a USA 416 2wd automatic to VG2 manual AWD using the parts from a 416 in a scrap yard in UK. Brakes, shocks same. Transmission mount is different than yours.
@karlwestyman8387 Yeah, I wish I had an identical one. I used to have a 211 CDI. It was as basic as it could get, but it was the short and low model. I do have one friend who has one. Maybe I can make a better comparison.👌
@@karlwestyman8387 you had the fulltime awd?
@@Timosgarage85 ZG2 transfer case is fulltime 4WD. Center and rear locks. The parts I received were from a 416 ambulance.
@karloskelly Nice! Yeah, I have seen well-specced firefighters, ambulances, and even armored police vehicles. Which I could have had: the ZG3 transfer case with the low-speed gear.
What gear ratios do you have in diffs?
@@JJ-ut5iv on the 313cdi 4x4 its 4,375 and on the 416cdi its 4,111🤔
@Timosgarage85 for us in USA a UK company Quaife is going to build a Torsen limited slip for 3.73 gears soon I tried the one for 4.37 and the offset was 3/8" too much to shim.
@JJ-ut5iv Yeah, I saw your post on Facebook. It would be cool to have a Torsen differential. I forgot to mention that. On the 416 CDI, the differential lock can be engaged even at speeds like 60-80 km/h. In 4x4, it will disengage the rear differential lock if speeds go above 50 km/h. And 4x4, I think, was disengaged above 80 km/h. I wonder what differential ratio options the Sprinters had in total.
@@Timosgarage85 in USA THE T1N had 3.73 & 4.11 maybe the cab and chassis could have bigger option
Tyfys. Great video. Subscribed
Thanks for sharing. Looks Wonderful! Great Job!
Thank you. Still a lot of clips to edit from other things I have done.🙏
Hey mate, what globes are you running? Are they LED replacements?
www.puuilo.fi/c-bright-led-muunnossarja-h7 Parking lights are Osram Led. 6000k w5w On other sprinter have had them for 5 years and work still great. Had the headlights also restored on it and shine as bright as can get and does not heatup the headlight somuch has halogens.
Keep the videos coming. Looking forward to the next.
I've got a similar issue with my T1N, but it's the rear door that won't lock. I'll lock the slider with the key, I'll hear actuators go twice, and the rear door stays unlocked. Not every time but most of the time. I have to go around back, open the door, push the lock paddle to get it to lock properly. I've tried cleaning the contacts on both the pillar and the door but that hasn't seemed to help. I guess I should try pulling those pieces out and checking the wire connections. Doesn't seem like there's much to those that they would need replacing?
Now that I found the problem, I recommend testing the door pins with a multimeter. Open the rear door and set the multimeter to "continuity" mode. So when it beeps, it has a complete electrical circuit. On rear door you can take the cover off and look inside. Are the wires Ok on the pins. If they are broken. Also, the doorlock has a microswitch inside the lock. It can sometimes pop out of place.
@@Timosgarage85 I'll give that a try, though I don't think the wiring is the issue. The actuator functions, it just won't stay in the locked postiion.
@wanderingzythophile9083 Did the others stay locked? Close all the doors, then press the lock button on the remote. (It will lock and unlock because it's faulty.) Immediately press lock again. (It should then lock the functioning doors and the faulty one stays open, so you can be sure the problem is with this door.)
@@Timosgarage85 So I did some experiments while inside the van with the fob that I never use, hah. When locking, slider actuator works fine. Rear door actuator extends and then retracts straight away. I did continuity tests on the contacts on the pillar and door. I've got two sets, each with two contacts. Top pillar/door contacts have continuity, bottom pillar/door contacts, no continuity. Weird thing though, and I don't know what this means: touching a top pillar contact pad (either one) with a bottom pillar contact pad (either one) gets me a repeating beeping, not a constant tone.
@wanderingzythophile9083 I recommend you now take off the plug from the door actuator and test with a multimeter, one end on the door pin and the other on the plug's pin. This is to make sure that the wire from the plug to the pin top is okay.
Got a lot done today.👍
@Ms.Frankenbuilder Thanks. That was actually done 1.5 weeks ago.🤭 Today, I changed the windshield and restored the headlights with a new clear coat. Yesterday, I restored the front driveshafts, changed the front drive units seals, and replaced the steering rack rubber boots. I'll edit and upload the work soon. Stay tuned!🙏
Lubrication is important in the door mechanism. And don't clean live power contacts with metal brushes. I see the brass brush in your hand and I can guess what happened. I think showing that would have been educational and comical. We all make mistakes. No need to edit them out.
Yes, a soft brush. Or it will damage the layer and start to rust. Should have said that.
@@Timosgarage85 if you use a conductive brush to clean the contact plates on the door jam it will spark like crazy. I see you cleaned the pins with sand paper and I hope you also cleaned the contact plates they meet.
Yeah, there i used a brush. Hmm righ😄 it could technicaly spatk if use a brush cos may have electrical contact. I think it would be good to use 800 or higher grid paper
Great vids! Thanks! Recently bought a 2006 313 4x4 too. Idea is to slowly turn it into family weekender adventure van. Will be following your project with interest!! 👍
Oh, thank you. Did you have any problems with yours, or was everything working? Two days ago, it snowed here a lot. I had the chance to test it out in the snow. I have studded Nokian winter tires on the van now. In RWD mode, it still struggles. If there were weight on the rear axle, it would be better. When 4x4 was engaged and the rear locker was on, it felt like it could go anywhere.😄
Really hope that’s all the rust you have to deal with. Mine looked fine on first and second look. 👀 Then not so fine anymore 😅 Another thing. What’s the small vacuum you’re using. I am looking for sth small in the car like this.
@rgbgfabian2 yeah, i also drive a duallwheel sprinter, that was in much worse shape. Just about to finish rebuilding it. Had to weld about 50 places 😄. The small vacum is a hilti vc 2d-22 battery vacumcleaner. www.hilti.fi/c/CLS_DUST_WATER_MANAGEMENT/CLS_CONSTRUCTION_VACUUMS_DUST_EXTRACTORS/r18834779
