December 8, 2024 - "The Gatherings"
My mind scurries from memory to memory as I race through both personal experiences and visceral reminders of the beauty of community during this season.
That picture, of course, changes constantly over time, and it’s never perfect, but it certainly leaves many of us with amazing memories and warm hearts.
Then, there is the inevitable hyper-romanticization of The Gatherings that we see in movies and television.
One of my favorites is the final scene in “It’s a Wonderful Life” where the whole town is cycling through George and Mary’s living room.
There is no denying the powerful force of The Gatherings.
When people of like mind and spirit gather in one place, a unique power becomes evident.
A power that is beneficial to us in our walk on this earth as disciples of Christ.

December 1, 2024 - "Christmas Memories : Anticipation"

“Anticipation” is a powerful emotion. It’s what gets us out of bed before dawn on the first day of vacation. It’s what brings deep satisfaction in our soul as we look forward to our children’s future. And, if you’ll pardon the hard transition, it is what sustained the Israelites for generations as they endured hardship, slavery, and defeat. They were sustained for millennia by the Anticipation ...

It is hard for us to even imagine what life would have been like as a first-century Christian. But as we review the latter half of Paul’s instruction to the church in Thessalonica, I want us to do our best to remember the context. This was no back-water town. This was a cultural and economic center with relative freedom of movement, a sense of localized leadership that didn’t feel overly oppres...

In this brief series we are reviewing a couple of Paul’s letters to the churches - his Epistles - gathering practical insight and instruction on how to live out our faith in the midst of the inevitable challenges of life. As we do so, I would like to remind us of the proverbial “chicken or the egg”…almost circular gymnastics that accompany any discussion around practical application. It’s the r...

Our scripture reading (John 17) is the source of a famous phrase in Christian circles - that we are to be “in but not of the world.” It’s catchy. It rolls off the tongue. It’s also very meaningful. It is filled with purpose. But this phrase is also often misrepresented and misunderstood. The context of the phrase, more often than not, goes something like this: • Life is tough. It’s ugly around ...

Throughout the course of history we see evidence of people who were willing to be The Pioneer - the first to venture into new spaces, new ideas, new practices, and new frontiers... We don’t often think of Jesus in this light, but the writer of Hebrews takes us there on at least a couple occasions. There was a pioneer spirit in Jesus that is not only worthy of note, but I believe it is worthy of...

Job was a man that seemed to have every good thing in life…and had it all taken away from him - his possessions, his family, and his health. Let’s just say, he had questions for God. Serious, valid questions. After chapter upon chapter of questionable advice from friends and Job’s deep questions for God, the Father spends four whole chapters reminding Job of his place in this universe. That he ...

Our brains respond differently to questions than they do other forms of speech. A statement often initiates a relatively binary response. It is either true or false. It either agrees with our worldview, or it challenges it. A statement is processed as a more settled matter. Questions, on the other hand, encourage introspection, consideration, and discovery. They challenge us to justify a positi...

Definitions matter. Fundamental definitions are critical not only to base understanding… …but they allow us to build on their foundation and combine them together to answer more complex questions with consistency and accuracy. Said another way, if we get the base definition wrong, then any subsequent and more complex decisions made based on our errant understanding of a definition will be wrong...

I was an athletic-thespian-band-church kid that never quite fit in. I was “An Odd Duck”. And I couldn’t be more thankful for that reality. Because - and I firmly believe this - if you and I have aspirations of becoming a consciously-aware Christ follower, that journey is going to require us to be “An Odd Duck”. So we had better learn how to be comfortable in that uncomfortable space. Today we t...

Jesus the Christ, the Perfect One that was without sin, was killed by the Roman government, on behalf of the mob majority, because of something he said. People within his own tribe, a Jewish mob lead by the Pharisees, Sadducees, and Teachers of the Law, took their hatred to its absolute extreme. To use more modern-day vernacular, they deemed his rhetoric to be “hate speech,” engaged in an escal...

“You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.” - Inigo Montoya (The Princess Bride) As I considered our topic today, that phrase came to mind. There is a frequently used word around Christendom that I believe fits this movie line to a “T”. As soon as I say this word, you are going to recognize it. It just rolls off the tongue in churches across the globe. But, if I...

It’s 15 degrees outside, we’ve got about 10” of accumulation on the ground, and it’s snowing again. Hard. You realize it’s dangerous, but you don’t have any choice. You absolutely must go out in the storm. For some inescapable reason, you have to drive from point A to point B. In your garage you have two options: a 1975 half-ton pickup with a single drive rear axle and absolutely no weight in t...

I’ve been to our two major oceans and experienced them from multiple countries. I’ve been in the Rockies, the Smokies, and the Sierras. I’ve been in the Jamaican rain forests and deep in the pines stateside. And our trip to the red rocks of the Sedona desert was one of my favorite family vacations. But as beautiful and impactful as all of them have been, my favorite is the mountain forest of ei...

The concept of time is weird, isn’t it? It is constantly moving. It is fleeting. It is impossible to control. You can’t stop it. And though we seem to have mastered its measurement, it is still relatively arbitrary, and we have minimal control over its contents. Yes, we have our plans, schedules, and agendas. These are good, and they help us to be better stewards of this volatile resource. But ...

The Glory of the Cross poem See him there at Calvary dressed out in full array The penalty for sinners Gods justice on display The slaughtered lamb now speaking, His soul is open wide I'm smitten and forsaken, My God My God Oh Why! A mocking crowd comes tempting, with wagging heads allied A crown of thorns they gave him, set hard above his eye Yet some in sore amazement, let out a desperate cry! 'Tis Jesus friend of sinners, My God My God Oh Why Then the earth began to tremble and the sun now shut its eyes Lest sin should reign eternal, the cursed of God must die With troubled hearts we see him, but faithful we must be This blessed act of mercy , t'was My God My God for me! His sheep had all been scattered, alone and all undone His Fathers heart now grieving, they'd soon have aid to come His work was now accomplished, the trembling cup lay bare Sins darkness now upon Him, as he hung in great despair Before the day was finished, His parched lips would rehearse The only words befitting, My God My God I Thirst Through smitten, bruised, abandoned, faith eye would let him see In three days he would be risen, with the keys of victory At the dawning of the morning on the first day of the week He left the grave behind him, now gone to tend his sheep He spoke with his disciples, at a dinner by the sea Three times he asked one question, Peter lovest me? The Righteous King Eternal, t'was this man from Galilee By faith, you can receive him and live life full and free All nations now are groaning, while silent hearts just cry A broken heart of sorrows, O' our God will not deny Return thy tears of sorrow, to the One who died for thee No! You have not been forsaken, just but look to Calvary JS 2014
