Where I agree with Ryan Topping is his claim that art is more important than pragmatism. Our society and church doesn’t value beauty. However as a Protestant I disagree with everything else that Ryan Toppinh teaches
Erika is a dogmatic Catholic. Her views are totally unrealistic. Women need to control their own bodies to be fully free.
Excellent!
Can't wait for the second installment "Catholic Satanism". Things are progressing nicely in the church...
If women having equal rights is Satanism to you, then you need to do some serious soul searching about why you're so angry and hateful. I'll pray for God to open your eyes so you no longer feel as compelled to attack others who don't bow to your narrow-minded, misogynistic worldview.
When dr Schindler talks about our problems, he sounds right. When at the end, he talks about concrete solutions to this problems, he sounds hollow and unconvincing.
Americans finally discovered that Americanism wasn't "phantom heresy"?
Not yet.
@@rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr1 Sad.
Fantastic talk from Prof. George - Q and A great as well....
I'm always intrigued by Dr Thompson's insights, ever since I learned Thomistic Moral Theology from him in Catholic Studies. So good to hear him share about another topic he's passionate about. Thanks for posting this!
These people pressure Protestants to be Catholic. I know from experience with Ryan Topping and his friends. I became a Catholic at age 24
That San Joselito chapel is just marvelous. Beautiful work!
Ryan Topping is a narcissist
I wish this was available as a podcast since you don't show his slides anyway.
Another thing to note about Tintoretto's vast Crucifixion scene is the V-shaped area of ground just behind the Cross. It opens up like great wings, contributing powerfully to our sense of Christ's triumph as He reigns from the cross. I'd also like to add that one of my drawing students, Valerie Volpe, suggested to me immediately after the lecture that, in El Greco's painting of the Arrest of Christ ("El Expolio"), the Lord appears to be praying for his persecutors: "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do." Yes!
Jump up till about 11:20 to skip the audio glitches and enter into Reid's profound meditations on these masterpieces.
It's no wonder that the American people, regardless of their faith tradition, have believed for generations in a generic moralistic therapeutic diestic god. It's the only sort of faith that the liberal state tolerates. That was the solution to panprotestantism that existed in colonial America at the founding. Thank you D.C. Schindler. Faced with a plethora of creeds, we must conclude that they can't all be true, not even two can be true as they contradict themselves. So the solution is either to say they are all incorrect and thus endorse a private deism, or choose that one which is universal and True, and has her authority directly from Christ the Lord (the Catholic Church). But, of course, the actual form of government and economy would not be directly dictated by the Church and therefore we must consider what that would look like in practice. Therfore public dialogue in the form of apologetics/evangelization in all its forms is necessary to promote the Church, and discussion must be had to determine how such a state and economy would be formed and how we might get there from here. Such conversations should have been had as the industrial revolution and political revolutions that occurred as a result of the enlightenment were developing. Basically this problem should have been apparent by the council of Trent. We shouldn't have doubled down on medieval monarchy. Better late than never.
I think a large part of Mr. Schindler's argument relies on the observation that America is unraveling. Unfortunately, I think the reason why it is unraveling is precisely because many Americans are busy not observing this. Even Covid did not wake up enough people to how deeply rooted America's problem is.
Lincoln shows that the claim of neutrality and individuality is merely a symbolic and alienating claim to be analyzed and capitalized on by those capable. Otherwise, the south would have remained individualistic. After the Civil War is when These United States became The United States and tradition was slowly sublimated into the conforming powers of marketing. This is another way of showing that American Liberalism as you've phrased it here is already playing the same game as Catholicism.
Sad that our intellectuals could be so deluded... Of corse if a country is liberal it imposes a liberal ideology on religious people, however, its the same if the roles were reversed. It all depends on what perspective you take. The only difference between liberal and religious systems is that liberal values are formed from social consensus between free and rational individuals, while religious values are largely arbitrary (tradition).
Tradition is not arbitrary- see G.K. Chesterton's idea of the democracy of the dead.
@@GRIFFIN1238 Defined in this way, yes. Yet, as it exists in real institutions, tradition is not decided by democratic communal consensus. It is validated by the religious authorities who hold responsibility for imposing it on their communities as dogma.
@@sudabdjadjgasdajdk3120 What the comment above means when it says democracy of the dead is that the traditions validated by religious authorities are actually validated by all the past lives of Christians now dead and gone. It is called a democracy of the dead because your dead ancestors also get a vote on what traditions you should follow today because their experiences matter as much as yours do, or mine, or our neighbors.
@@alexandersmith7518 “Defined in this way”. I understand the sentiment yet disagree with the characterization of these ancestors as anything but themselves arbitrary religious authorities and not people like you and I. Not saying that is a bad thing, democracy isn’t always appropriate. However, recognizing that in this conversation does poke a hole in the speakers argument.
Essentially what you're saying is that the past isn't as important as the present. The past is arbitrary to put it in your words. @@sudabdjadjgasdajdk3120

Here we all are.
US is not a Christian country. The last Christian country was Spain before the civil war there.
A profound, if not challenging, blessing of peace in the midst of a particularly harrowing storm. Amazing! Thanks Dr. Schindler!
I'm reading this book. It is one of the most powerful books I have ever read.
Why Elizabeth Lev lessens the impact of her insightful and quite informative lecture with lame stabs at humor bewilders me. What could have been a sublime analysis of Catholic art is too often marred by her presumption that we share her humor. Was the audience too weak or too generous granting tittering laughs? Her attempt at bonhomie as a speaker makes what she has to say less not more. Keep your natural enthusiasm and warmth, temper the comedy.
I must humbly disagree. Enjoying learning and being able to occasionally chuckle is a gift not normally offered by most intellectuals. I love that she has both a wonderful point of view and finds humor and joy in sharing her knowledge. I thought it was a wonderful lecture.
Remember that one of the reasons the Founders hated the Catholic Church because it refused to see itself fit within and subordinate to our Church of England/Episcopalean/Protestant foundations. There wete more laws criminalizing Catholicism in place in 1787 than criminalizing abortion. Catholicism thrived here because it came to understand that it was one among many sects. Catholicism is feeling emboldened by having bought several seats on the Supreme Court. Our first Catholic judge wrote Dred Scott. Alito authors Dobbs, the new Dred Scott. There's a pattern here that runs counter to our Founding. Catholicism has lost it's way here.
What kind of broken reasoning concludes that it is Dobbs, not Roe, that is the analog to the Dred Scott decision?

I sense a Christian revival on the horizon. I am a millennial and grew up in the age of Porn, care free hedonism, and just a degradation of morality. I have been more drawn towards the teachings of Chirst as I have aged passed 30 , got married and started having kids.
