5th Metatarsal Base Fracture Foot
The 5th metatarsal is the bone on the outer aspect of your foot. This is commonly injured when you roll over on your foot. The muscle pulls so hard on the bone to stop you falling over it actually breaks the bone! This common foot fracture will heal on its own without any surgery most of the time. Simply rest, ice, compression and elevation will help it on its way!

    Thanks for your video and advice, I sustained this injury this morning after falling off my bike. My fracture is ‘non-displaced’ so my doctor has put it in a temporary cast for 5 days. He said after 5 days, it is vital to start serious mobility to ensure that I regain full range of movement. He said it would be painful but necessary. He said there those who wait for weeks until pain goes away to start mobility who end up with months and months of mobility exercises and subsequent pain, and those who start mobility after 5 days who regain mobility within a few weeks. What is your opinion on this?

    • @fractureinfo
      @fractureinfo 2 роки тому

      Be guided by your treating clinician. In the first few days it can be painful to move the elbow so resting in a cast is appropriate for some patients. I agree that prolonged immobilisation in a cast will result in needing to do a lot or stretching exercises to get the movement back.

Not easy..not ideal but doable..I mean I have to drive to work! I just have to remain in 1st gear a little bit longer when making a turn as I can't shift from 1st to 2nd and hold the wheel too! Hi Maddy, if the wrist is still painful after 2 weeks it would certainly be worth going back to be checked out. A broken scaphoid can be difficult to see on initial xrays. Sometimes you can see it on a repeat xray as the bone is trying to heal. If the wrist is very sore and the xray is normal a MRI scan might be needed to check it out in more detail.
