Winter Soil is Alive!

Take a look at the visible signs of life in winter pasture. See the signs that the soil food web is actively building and recycling resources. This is a pasture ecosystem recovering as we nurture it back from a depleted, chemically farmed cropland.

Grazing versus Mowing - 10-24-2014
Переглядів 6979 років тому
This is a short video to capture the stark differences between where we have managed grazing and where the landowner mows the grass just outside the fence. NOTE: About a minute into the video, I mis-identified the grass directly in front of me as fescue. It is actually bluegrass. You can see lots of mowed fescue, too... just over by my right knee. Sorry for the error.
Weed Root Ecosystem in Our Pastures
Переглядів 99410 років тому
As part of the Grazing Power series, we take a look at what is going on under a perennial weed in our pasture, and talk about alternatives for dealing with the presence of weeds in our pasture system. Early April, 2014, in central Virginia.

Thank you for this. One question is how do you keep it from happening again? It sounds like you were rotationally grazing the horses before (maybe even in a mob grazing fashion) and that is way the shed area got destroyed. Now that it is fixed, what is the difference in management to keep it from happening again? Thanks:)
Thank you for informative video. What is the ratio of water to sugar for the sugar solution?
Tip: innoculents have an expiration date
This stuff works so well it's just super messy lol I am trying to find something granular that does the same
How can we get that in Europe,on Balkan?
I cannot find soil biology boost or soluplex
Thank you Vail - came across this looking for regenerative agriculture in horse paddocks. We are going away from Grazon and chemical fertilizers at our place in Fauquier County and working to restore healthy soil. Love the idea of spreading the hay! Do you drag your fields to spread manure as part of pasture management? How about mowing?
I see this video is 6 years old. I hope by now they no longer need a sacrifice lot and can rotate their animals year round. That way they can keep and grow the new grass.
What IS THIS STUFF and where do you buy it??
Haven't a CLUE what you're talking about. Trying to find out WHAT an innoculant is and you're assuming we already know that. 😢
Rhizobia inoculant - various strains of bacteria for legumes, the Nitrogen-fixation bacteria that legumes use to fix atmospheric nitrogen.
Дуже сподобалось вас слухати. Супер свідчення. У вас реально талант від Бога навчати людей цій темі. Дякую
Дякую за цікаву розповідь. Ви дуже чітко все пояснили .
Was a content video supposed to accompany the intro?
Just move your water tank.
Thank you for this encouragement. We have recently purchased property with 4 small pastures. They were not maintained and we have lots of “wild lettuce “. We were mowing them down and my husband went and spot sprayed chemicals on them 😢. I’m so concerned because we are going to get a milk cow or two, we have 22 free range chickens. I pray we can move to this method of allowing nature work this land.
How did you break the hard layer up where the bad bacteria was flourishing?
Yeah I’d like to know that too.
great, beautiful, important. You know about Quorum Sensing and insects?
Good
Yes it is great video giving lot of information on farming . I do farming in organic way
wonder if it would help to have water troughs located in different areas. Maybe with a shade source or some type of protective cover close to each.
Brand info in description would be nice...
Great video about your process. What brand are those pants in the first section? pockets on the side…
Soluplex?
Thanks so much for sharing this. What was the plough used for the test swale cut mid march
To get your fruit trees that have been started from seed do they need to be inoculated.I can remember working on a orange tree farm that they did inoculate those seeds so they would bear fruit.
Great content. I learned a lot about inoculation.
No offense, but I don't understand having horses. Seems a huge waste of money. I raise cattle. Anyway, beautiful stand of grass you have. In fall, I overseed with Marshall ryegrass and the cows walk it in. It's a great cool weather grass.
Interests and passions are not about money. Any recreational activity is a "waist of money", but the time enjoying it is worth more then the money spent
@@bossyblackdog7691 "Waist of money" is when you spend too much on food and you get fat ;-)
A passion that feeds your soul is never a waist of money. Horse people understand this.
An incredibly beautiful, intelligent, young lady spreading knowledge and intellect. Shame she stopped posting videos.
There is one a month ago.
@@wayneessar7489 Awesome, thanks
This is a great video. Especially if you don't have the means to till it all up, like traditional methods. We have to consider more natural approaches to maintaining the soil biome, as opposed to disrupting the entire biology. Rudolf Steiner had a very natural approach and broad understanding of the importance of the microbiology within the soil, and even the importance of weeds. I had even started an approach similar to this video, as it only made practical sense to lay the old hay out in order to seed the ground. I find it odd that you have over 10k views, and only 98 likes. And who gives a thumbs down, for crying out loud?
Excellent video....more people should do it just like you have. Simple, great examples and explanations. Thank you!!!
Thank you so much for a very well laid out video chronology. I started with Greg Judy videos, found others that used various drags, all are of great benefit, but I liked your multi year display. Thank you very much
Thanks for talking too much
Listen here, buddy.
Thanks for watching lol
wow never heard anyone explain this so thoroughly....thnx
Just curious how would this technique work for Wyoming ......mostly clay?
I compost my manure using a static aeration method engineered by O2 Compost. We have allowed such a disservice to our soil. Have you seen DIRT The Movie? All of my animals eat certified organic so my compost is very valuable. Your work is very exciting and of the greatest importance.
Did you do a Sure Foot training video with Wendy Murdoch?
Victoria Allen yes I did! I love her work :). Feldenkrais saves me when I tore all of my spinal ligaments :). For that training the horses were the first ride out of the field so things were a bit rough - coming off of over three years of pasture rest while I was farming and making our soil and grazing mentorship programs
Oh that's great. I have been taking Feldenkrais lessons for a few years. I am going to a clinic with Wendy this weekend. I will have a Functional Integration lesson with her and then I will get on a horse for the first time in ten years. I'm so excited. I bought a set of firm pads for my horses and I found the video you did with Wendy very interesting. I really liked how respectful you are of Paloma. Grace is such a wonderful goal.
I like how talking/narrating attracts cats, dogs, children and sometimes livestock. I don't mind a casual introduction like "Hi Fluffy"
lol That is Jerry Kitty - he was being quite insistent to be part of the LOVE!
THAT IS RED SOIL!
Heard your talk at NOFA 2016 (for 2017) I loved your talk and hope you keep putting up these great vids! TFSN
I am listening to your 2016 conference talk with the BFA... love what you're doing and glad I found you on youtube!
Awesome - I LOVE your organization and what you are about. Are you coming to BFA this year?
Really amazing projects
Awesome example of ecological succession! From annual weeds to perennial grasses.. using nothing but animals properly managed :)
Stay tuned as we will be releasing more segments from several emu ears of filming land rehabilitation in detail Also check out our workshop and online training course starting soon: Grow-Your-Soil.com GrazingPower.com
