Grazing versus Mowing - 10-24-2014
Переглядів 6979 років тому
This is a short video to capture the stark differences between where we have managed grazing and where the landowner mows the grass just outside the fence. NOTE: About a minute into the video, I mis-identified the grass directly in front of me as fescue. It is actually bluegrass. You can see lots of mowed fescue, too... just over by my right knee. Sorry for the error.

    Thank you for this. One question is how do you keep it from happening again? It sounds like you were rotationally grazing the horses before (maybe even in a mob grazing fashion) and that is way the shed area got destroyed. Now that it is fixed, what is the difference in management to keep it from happening again? Thanks:)

    Thank you Vail - came across this looking for regenerative agriculture in horse paddocks. We are going away from Grazon and chemical fertilizers at our place in Fauquier County and working to restore healthy soil. Love the idea of spreading the hay! Do you drag your fields to spread manure as part of pasture management? How about mowing?

    I see this video is 6 years old. I hope by now they no longer need a sacrifice lot and can rotate their animals year round. That way they can keep and grow the new grass.

    Thank you for this encouragement. We have recently purchased property with 4 small pastures. They were not maintained and we have lots of “wild lettuce “. We were mowing them down and my husband went and spot sprayed chemicals on them 😢. I’m so concerned because we are going to get a milk cow or two, we have 22 free range chickens. I pray we can move to this method of allowing nature work this land.

    To get your fruit trees that have been started from seed do they need to be inoculated.I can remember working on a orange tree farm that they did inoculate those seeds so they would bear fruit.

    No offense, but I don't understand having horses. Seems a huge waste of money. I raise cattle. Anyway, beautiful stand of grass you have. In fall, I overseed with Marshall ryegrass and the cows walk it in. It's a great cool weather grass.

    This is a great video. Especially if you don't have the means to till it all up, like traditional methods. We have to consider more natural approaches to maintaining the soil biome, as opposed to disrupting the entire biology. Rudolf Steiner had a very natural approach and broad understanding of the importance of the microbiology within the soil, and even the importance of weeds. I had even started an approach similar to this video, as it only made practical sense to lay the old hay out in order to seed the ground. I find it odd that you have over 10k views, and only 98 likes. And who gives a thumbs down, for crying out loud?

      Victoria Allen yes I did! I love her work :). Feldenkrais saves me when I tore all of my spinal ligaments :). For that training the horses were the first ride out of the field so things were a bit rough - coming off of over three years of pasture rest while I was farming and making our soil and grazing mentorship programs

    • @victoriaallen8271
      @victoriaallen8271 6 років тому

      Oh that's great. I have been taking Feldenkrais lessons for a few years. I am going to a clinic with Wendy this weekend. I will have a Functional Integration lesson with her and then I will get on a horse for the first time in ten years. I'm so excited. I bought a set of firm pads for my horses and I found the video you did with Wendy very interesting. I really liked how respectful you are of Paloma. Grace is such a wonderful goal.
