Hogwarts Legacy in Proton
Hogwarts Legacy is an amazing game! I've waited a long time for a world that is completely interactive, exploration is rewarded and the architecture is completely modeled inside and out. This is the most detailed open world I've ever seen and you can explore on foot or flying on a broom.
Its not without issues in Proton...

Nvidia Auto Throttling Audio Drop Outs - Linux Mint
❤❤❤
How to do it
I haven't played Dead Frontier in years... unfortunately the "Pipelight" feature is no longer available and Unity 3D doesn't support Linux Chrome versions. I may try the stand alone client again. So give me some time to troubleshoot. Proton is really good these days and I noticed the Dead Frontier team created their own browser too... but sadly I bet we have to run it in a prefix with Proton or Wine
I messed around with the Dead Frontier stand-alone client and even their custom Chromium browser and couldn't get it to run. I tried using Heroic Launcher and both will install, but when I run the Dead Frontier executable the Unity window opens and then Chromium, but nothing loads.
Man, this is the ONE game I can't get working on Linux Mint. Of course it's 10 years later so they might have changed a lot with Wine since then, but trying Proton, Wine, PlayonLinux, all of it, it just crashes during loading. Of course, the game was unreliable on Windows so you can't really blame Linux for it probably.
I recently converted my Battlefield 2 from PlayOnLinux to Heroic Launcher. Heroic is amazing because when you do a manual installation it has a quarter of the steps required in PlayOnLinux. I'm using Proton Experimental and just created a new prefix in Heroic, copied the EA GAMES folder with Battlefield 2 in it over to a folder in my home directory. Then I pointed the new prefix to the bf2.exe and ran it. It was tricky because the initial manual setup requires you to select the "exe" first, then a prefix. But once I got it all setup the game ran perfectly! Just remember you need to have the original game installation first. Mine is from CD ROM and then you install the most recent patch from EA Games which removes the need for a CD in the drive. Once you have all that, it will run.
how to run? mine is crash when open
I am playing with Steam and this is a Linux version of Tomb Raider. It should run without Proton or Wine. Be sure you have a good video card and install video drivers in Linux. If for some reason it still won't run, but compatibility mode in Steam and select Proton Experimental
@@brianmccracken7000 i'm using heroic not steam
I got this to to run using Nobara. The second i tried to update Nobar from the "out of the box" state the system was hanging on the reboot prompt leadign me to believe that if you get stuff working on Nobar to not update it all anymore an djust leave it. Possibly even taking the machine off of the net and do off line only. I got all sorts of games working on it usign Proton through steam. I think i will keep a nobara partition jsut for games and run mint on the other.
Mine has some slight stuttering using Mint and i bought it from Steam. It works smooth and flawlessly in Windows. what should i do if i want to optimize it in Linux mint? Im using Proton 8 point something in the compatibility feature.
Proton is really great for gaming in Mint! If you are having some performance issues it may be due to the video card and drivers. What video card are you using? Laptop or Desktop with dedicated video card? What version of drivers are you using? Is Vulkan installed? This is definitely an older game which should run good on most modern hardware, but sometimes a CPU can cause issues as well. Proton is basically the same as Wine and requires some extra processing power to translate all DirectX data into OpenGL or Vulkan.
@@brianinthered it's a desktop I put together. The cpu is a ryzen 7 1800x and my card is a geforce msi rtx 3070. I think I have 16gb of ram. I'm not sure how to install drivers or where the GeForce experience app is available to linux.
Sounds like a great gaming machine! For Mint, search the start menu for "Driver Manager" Click the one with "recommended" and then apply to download and install the driver. Once its done, reboot and then your games should be flying! The newest Nvidia driver is 550, but I've been using 535 for a long time and it rocks!
Hey, do you know what happened to Ravee? And are there any backups of his games online?
That is a great question! I did a google search and found this on archive.org archive.org/details/exsynchronos_win
@@brianinthered Thank you!
Nice!
How can I run Oblivion and Skyrim offline and without any launchers on Linux Mint
Great question... You may have to look it up online. It really depends on which version you have. If you have them in Steam, then you can play with Proton and hopefully the launchers are gone... if anything the launchers allow you to set the graphical settings. Steam does allow you to set it to Offline mode.
I can't get Bioshock or Bioshock Remastered (I own them both on Steam) to play. My system: Ubuntu 20.04 Ryzen 3 1200 nVidia GeForce GT 1030 16GB RAM I've tried both games running Proton 8.0-5, but neither will launch. What am I doing wrong?
Are you able to run any other Windows games in Steam with Proton? Make sure you have 32-bit libraries installed and also Vulkan. Those are pretty important for running games with Proton or Wine. Also, did you add this launch option: bash -c 'exec "${@/2KLauncher\/LauncherPatcher.exe/Build\/Final\/Bioshock2HD.exe}"' -- %command% -nointro
Hello! Could you share a step by step guide installing and playing FS9 in Linux?
I would love to, but I don't have Flight Simulator 9
is this for chromebook
Nope, for Linux desktop. Chromebooks can play some Linux games, but I'm pretty sure you can't install PlayOnLinux, Lutris or Steam on them. If Steam works, that is your best bet because it will use Proton to play games.
@@brianinthered Ok thanks for telling me

Thank you my wife has been want to run this under Linux for years herself.
Was she able to run ABZU in Linux? I only own the game on Epic Games but was able to run it with Heroic Launcher and a version of Proton.
@@brianinthered I haven't tried it yet, I will work on it during the holidays she wants me to put a 2 TB SDD drive in her computer dedicated just to her games. I know I'm going to use Ubuntu for her OS. I will let you know what I find.
Ubuntu is GREAT for gaming and a 2TB SSD would a fast upgrade. Have you already done some gaming in Ubuntu?
@@brianinthered yes as a matter of fact I have... I have run City Skylines under it and Chicken Invaders however the 2 games I play most is DCS World and Microsoft Flight Simulator which I long for a day in which I can run them under Linux.
That is awesome! I know some online games that use Anti-Cheat probably won't run in Wine or Proton. for City Skylines and Chicken Invaders did you use Lutris, Wine, PlayOnLinux, Bottles or Steam?
My pc is down for the moment (gpu fan shit itself, waiting for replacements), but I’ve seen 2 potential fixes that you may or may not have tried: 1.) running nvidia settings app as admin: open terminal and type “sudo nvidia-settings” without the quotes, enable max performance, save settings and (allegedly) it will save the settings. I tried this but didn’t get enough time to test bc I was having major os/UA-cam and video lag, but oddly games were fine. 2.) uninstall nvidia settings entirely and just install drivers alone: “sudo apt remove nvidia-settings”, then either “sudo ubuntu-drivers autoinstall” OR “sudo apt install nvidia-driver-(latest driver number, which I think is 535, so it would be “sudo apt install nvidia-driver-535” but double check) Again I haven’t tested either of these but the forum posts I found claim that they’ve solved their system stutter problem!! If you want to try them out feel free and I will try them as soon as I can get my pc back up and post the results.
Those are great suggestions! I have experienced so many issues with Nvidia drivers recently on all of my computers at home. Even the update from Mint would crash each one of my computers. so frustrating! Just this last week in Oct 2023 Nvidia has pushed out a new update for Driver 535 and apparently they have fixed the problem. Now my computers do not crash when updating Nvidia drivers. For the issue in my video, the temporary fix is to run a start up command in Mint: nvidia-settings -a '[gpu:0]/GpuPowerMizerMode=1' This forces PowerMizer to Maximum Performance every time I login. So far it is working on all of my computers... even my Media Center connected to my 4K TV
Oooohhhh I see, smart. I’ll have to try that too if admin/uninstalling all together doesn’t work. And it’s very frustrating! Especially since we’re running on modern and good hardware. But I recently switched to Linux and otherwise love it, I suppose just getting used to the quirks of another OS and figuring out how to make it run right are just part of it! Thank you for the tip tho I’ll have to try that first I think, it’s pretty annoying to see tearing and stuttering on UA-cam with an i9 9900k and 3080ti lmao, the one thing I miss abt windows was that it would just work. Still not worth it tho!!!
I've been using Mint for about 10 years now and mostly for gaming! I will never go back to Windows, even with Linux bugs. In the last 3 years Proton has really accelerated gaming in Linux and I love it! Recently finished Titanfall 2... now playing Borderlands 3 again and started The Witcher 3. All are running well despite some of the issue in BL3. I love Proton! Anyways, I posted this video because I couldn't figure out why my 4K TV was having audio and stuttering issues. I tried EVERYTHING to fix it! Then one day I realized setting "Maximum Performance" in Nvidia PowerMizer wasn't working. You could literally see the speed numbers moving back-n-forth. Thanks Nvidia for countless hours of troubleshooting! Here are some issues I've been recently dealing with in Mint 21 1. Background Slideshow has a limit of images available 2. Updates /video updates - Crashing Mint 3. Updates corrupting /home drive 4. Steam shortcut no longer starts Steam 5. Drag-n-Drop files to folders doesn't work 6. Uploading/Opening a file doesn't remember path 7. Login Screen background doesn't load 8. OpenShot Video Editor doesn't open, have to re-install Resolved: 1. Steam - Vulkan Processing Shaders Bug 2. Waking from Sleep (no video) 3. Mint 20 & 21 - No drivers in Driver Manager
@@brianintheredyes I see the way now haha, the customization, learning command line, the control and lack of bloatware? It’s all awesome. Totally worth ironing out some bugs. I’ve started learning offensive cyber/red teaming and being in a Linux environment helps a lot! And yes I had always heard how much Linux sucked for games in the past but I’ve had no problems with gaming specifically, actually cyberpunk runs better for me on Linux! Proton is an awesome thing. Sorry to hear you’ve had so many issues, I did also encounter the login background bug and haven’t fixed that either. It’s on my short list once my pc lives again!
I was able to temporarily resolve the background issue by finding the default path to the background folder and putting my own image in there. Keep having fun with Linux and learn all you can! I have Linux on 4 gaming PCs, 2 TVs, 2 Laptops and 1 Server.
Glad you're enjoying Titanfall!
I am, never played the first one but for $3.00 I'll give it a try. I used to love playing Armored Core on the Playstation years ago. Titanfall brings back those memories!
I made it a little easier, ditched Nvidia and installed Amd )
I've been thinking about it with this Media Center computer, but all my other PCs run great with Nvidia GeForce video cards and gaming.
using kde on manjaro, updates don't install nvidia-settings any more, im ok with that.
Do you think the updates reset my settings for Nvidia control panel? I can't change Preferred mode to "Maximum Performance" and quit because it doesn't save.
@@brianinthered yeah its not great is it, i have approached the same issue, cant save, when i save; did i save it to the right conf, errr... no, it didn't take after reboot, what if i save it to this conf... errrr.. nope, wtf do i haz to do to save me settings rofl, it is a farce. giving me bouts of lack-of-confidence. it should be easier than this, ffs its my hardware, my system, why isn't this much much easier! ergo, therefore, nvidia-settings not being reinstalled after update is kinda welcome lol
Same problem here! I've got a Linux guru friend who can help me figure out how to make the settings save. I will post my solution here!
So this is what a Linux machine is capable of...
Yes, and much more! I post games every few weeks on our website. With Proton, Wine and native ports from developers almost all of my games run. Not always perfectly, but they run! www.gamersonlinux.com/forum/portal/index.php
Hey man, question on the game settings, are you able to run with dx12? I am not able to run sottr with dx12 on proton 7.0-6😢
Is it a 1.10 or 1.5 version of the game?
that is a good question... I'm playing on Steam, so where would it tell me the version?
@@brianinthered as I remember, version number should be in the down right corner in the first window
I found it, I am running version: 1.10.4.2
Game looks awesome. No crashes?
Nope, I did experience some slowness when I cranked ALL the graphics to Ultra, so I turned down Ambient Occlusion and AntiAliasing to High. I'm pretty sure I disabled Motion Blur as well. But I'm surprised how well its running with the Virtual Desktop setting. I haven't used that in years!

I normally don't add a Frames Per Second display because I'm trying to keep everything as vanilla as possible. I guess I could add the DXVK one, but have never used it before. Honestly the performance was great for ABZU with all the settings maxed out.

Your screen is full of Tearing, its impossible to play that like this, should use vsync or Gsync
Most of the tearing is due to recording and playing. I've always had issues with screen tearing in Linux. I'm afraid if I enable vsync it will just slow down the game.

Hey, were you able to get Multiplayer working? The Game Crashes when I try to Host Or Join a game.
Geesh I haven't played this game in years. Did you search online? Maybe post on www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/new
I tried using Proton-GE-10-1 as well, but I found out that FO76 doesn't play well with that one, it feels like I'm rubber banding all over, It's smooth for 1 second and then the FPS goes down and back up and then down..hope you get what I'm trying to say xD. It's super weird! I figured out that just using regular Proton-Experimental (I think it works with Proton-6.3 too) gives me so much better framerates and smoother experience, yes the sound doesn't work out of the box, but that is fixable by using this command "protontricks 1151340 faudio". Now you will have audio too! BTW it is wise to turn down the texture quality, the game uses way too much VRAM and can easily cripple a GTX 1060 6GB. Your probably not playing the game anymore because the Free Weekend is over, but I hope I can help other people out :)
Yeah the free weekend is over, but its great to have this information for other gamers as you have mentioned. I enjoyed Fallout 76 a lot! So I will probably pick it up during a sale in the future. Maybe the Summer Sale? Then I'll try installing faudio as you said and use experimental. Maybe by then ProtonGE will work better? Thanks for your tips!
that's not 8 bit.

Unfortunately I don't have any of those games.... You can follow just about any of our guides on the website and insert your game instead of the game in that specific guide. this isnt working for me at all, i have an rx570 and a ryzen 3600x, does anyone know any possible solutions? I'm new to this and i dont know anything about it
I'm not too familiar with AMD video cards and drivers, but make sure your RX570 supports Vulkan drivers. Then make sure Vulkan is install on your distribution. That is critical for Proton to handle DirectX translation. Does the game launch at all?
Hello. I'm surprised to see that the videos after each chapter work on your setting. In mine case, they don't play and the game freeze at the end of the video. I try to install Media Foundation (perhaps is wuat you've done ?), but, it's not working ... Some message error in winetricks. How do you do that ?
it has to be media foundation. It is such a pain to figure out exactly how to install it. I have a step by step guide for Borderlands 3 that should help you! www.gamersonlinux.com/forum/threads/borderlands-3-in-proton.3166/
@@brianinthered Thanks for your very quick answer ! You help me very clearly. It works just with the step 2. ^_^ Great. And, of course, I've subscribe to your channel : we have the same purpose (but me it's in french). ^_^ Thanks a lot ! ^_^
@@dlAdM - Awesome! Glad to hear it was useful. I actually have a PlayOnLinux prefix with DXVK and Media Foundation already installed. Then I just copy/paste it and rename it before installing a new game. Its more difficult for Proton in Steam, but I'm happy MF is working. Wine developers are already boasting MF and DirectX support in newer versions of Wine. So hopefully one day we won't have to do all these workarounds.
@@brianinthered Yep, days after days, the number of games easily playable increase. And it's very good. ^_^ Now, I try to fix an other problem (with all Windows games ) : I can launch them with Proton 5.0 but never with Proton 5.13. With that version, games never launch at all. The script stop after few seconds, without any error message. It's very strange ...
@@dlAdM - That is strange... Try deleting the Proton 5.13 folder in "Common" then run Steam again and it should download it again. I immediately switched to 5.13 and haven't had any problems. I'm on Nvidia with a GeForce GTX 1060
