Inspiring creativity with nature for the average person.
I Put a DIY Terrarium in an IKEA Cabinet
Today, I built a stunning DIY terrarium in an $78 IKEA cabinet. I did this on a tight budget, but I still made it work! Watch as I take you through the incredible process of building the beautiful tiny garden inside. I was able to put lots of awesome plants like an orchid, a bromeliad, and lots of other plants too! Trust me, it's worth subscribing to see more of this unique project!

It would help your seo if you added #blaliden to your video tags. I watched this ages ago and it took me three months to find it again.
Wouldn’t have thought of using some of those plants in there. Cool build. I’d like to do one of these one day. Thanks for the video.
No problem! Nearly a year in and it's still going strong!
Amazing!! What camera are you employing… fantastic work
Thank you! It's actually just done with my iPhone 13!
Where did u get that piece for ontop?
That piece is actually a glass shelf that came with the IKEA unit.
I like the video but I like you more 🙄🙏🏾
Lol thanks!
@@SaltedCarmel no fucker come blow my back out 😭😭😭😭
@@RoAnime1bro your disgusting
Love your video ive been trying to find people that makes things like this so what do u plan on putting in it if u do
I have plans to put a very special reptile in it!
Noice
Thanks!
'promo sm'
?
What kind of moss is that? Is it live?
It is live! Moss is pretty cool because even if it is dried out, you can just hydrate it and it will come back to life!
@@SaltedCarmel what species?? I like it
@@HumilityListens I'll be honest, I'm not 100% sure. I bought it at Home Depot simply as "Live Moss"
@@SaltedCarmel oh wow very cool ill have to look it up
@@HumilityListens Go for it!
Looks awesome. You can apply substrate directly to the wet expanding foam and skip carving and silicone. Ever Evolving Exotics does it on all his builds. Makes sense. The foam is stickier than the silicone.
Definitely could have done that. However, I decided against it as I wanted to have direct control over the shape of my background. Expanding foam tends to expand in directions you don't always intend it to, but that method would have definitely saved me a lot of time!
WOOOOOO
😂😂
This is amazing! But will you please not change and go into the internet voice like how dr plants did? He was so calm and now he is like screaming and so annoying. I really enjoyed this so please stay this calm
Thanks for the tip! I’m definitely trying to find my niche right now, but I’ll always just be me!
Nice work! I'm heavily considering starting a project like this to create a living room set piece. This video serves as an excellent inspiration!
Thanks so much! It's definitely an awesome low-maintenance piece! I do nothing other than spray it down daily, but you could even automate that with a misting system!
Great job, that looks awesome. You also gave very good explanations for every step :)
Thank you! I try my best to make it clear what I’m doing so others can recreate it too! Having awesome nature displays should be for anyone :)
I love goldfish so much. They can learn to „kick tiny balls around and swim trough hoops. Unfortunately they need really big aquariums (500 liters) and my apartment is too small for that 🥲 If you want to look further into intelligent fish I recommend the elephant nose fish. Seems they have their own kind of language via electricity. Absolutely fascinating!
Will definitely have to check that out! Yeah, I agree goldfish definitely need bigger aquariums than they’re given most of the time. Glad you know your stuff!! 🙌🏼
Hi! Nice job! What type of lighting are you using with this terrarium beside the LED back lighting strip?
Hi there! The light I’m using is a SANSI 24W LED light from Amazon!
@@SaltedCarmel thanks..is that a grow light for the plants ?
And how & where exactly is that placed /attached in the terrarium? Thanks so very much!
@@plant-a-holic The light simply rests on top of the terrarium. I used one of the glass shelves instead of the metal top to allow the light to get through! Hope that makes sense!
@@plant-a-holic Yes, it is a grow light! From the research I did, it's the best budget full-spectrum light on Amazon.
Maybe by taping a nittle to the end of the turkey baster
That could work! I'll see if I can try it out.
Thats so cool... are you going to add anything other than springtails and isopods?
Maaaaaybeeee… 👀
Soil in the bath...noooo
Wasn't my brightest moment...
The sound of you cutting that foam makes me want to scream.
My bad! I didn't know it would be that bad!
lol I just turned the volume down at that part! Loved the rest of the video!
@@Beth_Amphetamine So glad you did! I'll keep it in mind for next time 🤣
awesome man!
Thank you! 🙌🏼
100 subscribers and I'll go find a dragon to put in the terrarium!
Well that was quick...
Really creative and cool. Glad I randomly found this. Aftern 10k into a reef tank years ago, I’d like to try this… for less $ hopefully. lol.
Haha I totally feel you on that. Reefing can get expensive! This was a super fun project and, so far, it's very low maintenance too!
@@SaltedCarmel yeah I’ve been wanting to do something with my son.. a small ecosystem or something. This is great. I’d love to do a salt aquarium again but make it much smaller. Maybe 25 gal and after I move so I don’t ever have to break it down. lol. Subbed and looking forward to updates. I also noticed people mentioning these rare plants being sold at big stores for cheap all of a sudden. It’s all over Reddit. You know more about that than me but a heads up if not too late to find any. - Pete
@@peter-radiantpipes2800 Thanks for the heads-up! I'll definitely keep an eye out for those rare plants. A small ecosystem would definitely be awesome to make with your son. Maybe I'll make a small saltwater ecosystem at some point!
how much did this cost you, from cabinet to plants to substrate?
The cabinet was $78 from IKEA. I purchased about $50 worth of plants, but I also used some plants I already had at home. Substrate was about $30 and silicone, expanding foam, and foam board was around $40. I'd say this project is pretty easily done under $250. Hope that helps!
@@SaltedCarmel thanks. you definitely turned $250 into something worth 4 times that. 🙌
@@SoTypicallyMeh Thanks so much! I really appreciate that!
I've always wanted to try one of this builds This one came up great! I had a good laugh when you tried to get the background into the cabinet! I had the same issue in my last foam build 🤣 Keep an eye on leaks apparently that's the only real weakness in these cabinets.
Thanks for the tips! I actually took the metal top of the cabinet and ended up using it as a tray underneath. I'll definitely keep an eye out though!
@@SaltedCarmelCould we get a 6 month or 1 year update on any changes, growth and lessons learned?
im the 70th subscriber
Let's go! Thank you!!
nice
Appreciate it!
I really like that you prebuilt on styrofoam board and not directly on the glass. Good luck with your springtails and isopods! Looking forward to a follow up.
Thanks! What makes it super nice is the foam board isn’t even siliconed to the back glass. This way I can take it out for maintenance or easy moving if I ever need to! I’ll be back with an update soon!!
did you get the idea from serpa design?
I saw his video on it, but to be honest it was just a way to have a larger enclosure for less than the price of any big-brand tank! SerpaDesign used glass panels to build his own, but I just used the whole shelf!
@@SaltedCarmel hmm I thought he made one with the ikea.
@@SaltedCarmel ua-cam.com/video/XfF2QNpEFPE/v-deo.htmlsi=vlASBaTN6-tz6-gy
@@Carsonschickens Maybe he did, I'll go look and see!
@@Carsonschickensyeah Tanner did it a while ago with an ikea cabinet as well. Not that it’s a big deal. There are no original ideas anymore lol
dude this is awesome, i just know your channel is gonna have a massive grow in followers considering this is your first video, so much skill!! the terrarium looks sick🔥
Thanks so much! I hope you’re right! I’m definitely going to make more videos!!
I thought I saw a carbon footprint on the carpet...
You may have 😂

Ahhhh man!!! We getting there Big steps man, love to see it🎉

That bag had a lot of water in it. It must not of been in there for long.
I only kept it in the bag while acclimating it. Once it was ready to go, I took him out!
@@SaltedCarmel yes I assumed that. I meant overall. I knew it hadn't been shipped a long distance, because that low amount of air would of killed it if it had been, and I assumed you knew enough to be aware of the time limit
@@zan6102I understand! I picked him up from a local fish store, so there were no worries about oxygen depletion in the bag. Great point! 🙌🏼
@@SaltedCarmel that's a big relief! Hope the little bud stays healthy
I really appreciate it! Had him eating pellets already, so things are looking good so far!
awww, they are cute!
they really are!
Let the little buddy go
This type of fish will only have a territory of about 2 square feet in the wild. He is right at home in the aquarium doing the same things he’d be doing in the wild!
