One of the very best practical teachings on giving I just read recently. It was by a Mr. W.M. Robertson a brother in assembly fellowship in 1915. It was called; On The Subject of Giving. Let me quote one part of it for you that I think is very instructive and helpful as well. Mr. Robertson said this; We should all as the Lord prospers us have not only an offering to give unto the Lord but if possible, a sacred fund from which we can disburse to any in need if and when the need arises. And let us remember when it comes to giving, the Apostle was clear in regard to how one should give in 2nd Cor. 9:7 - Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity (Compulsion): for God loveth a cheerful giver. This is the standard in the New Testament. No one is to be made to give under any coercion. That which is given is acceptable according to what a person has, not what he doesn't have. (2nd Cor. 8:12). That which is solicited and almost demanded as we see done under some sort of promise of profit for doing so, or judgment for not complying is foreign to the New Testament Scriptures and the Church that is found there. There is no such thing in the New Testament as the pastor or any one elder being completely supported financially in all areas of life. And there really is no such thing as the saved people of the Lord hearing from the pastor the Gospel week after week. The Gospel is for the unsaved in the world. The emphasis of financial support was on missionary and evangelistic work of a nature outside of the Church and not locally on the Lords Day. And what did the Christians do on the Lords Day? A simple reading of the Acts and the Epistles will tell any honest inquirer. The Christians gathered to remember and worship the Lord Jesus in the breaking of bread. There was no Pope, no Priest and no Protestant Minister. None are needed. The Holy Spirit and the word of God will do in these matters. The modern-day pastor that does all the preaching and all the teaching and everything else for a certain salary is an assault on the blessed Holy Spirit and every New Testament truth the Lord Jesus has secured for us as His people.
