2017 Fisk Arrival into Oshkosh - Simultaneous Landing with T-6 Overhead
This was our first trip to Oshkosh, and it was a exciting one. We flew the Fisk arrival from Ripon on Friday morning (7/28/17) right before the field closed for the Blue Angels practice. We were wheels up out of Wichita, KS at 4am, and landed at about 9:30am in Oshkosh in a Cessna 182 Skylane RG.
After one hold around Rush Lake, the video picks up before we were cleared for the right turn to runway 36. After turning final, we were instructed to go around because one of the B-29's was on final behind us. Coming back around on right base, we tried to mesh into the other traffic turning final, but went around again. On the second right base to final, we were instructed to angle it in and land on the yellow dot. Over the numbers, the tower told us to set it down as quick as we could for traffic above us.

Nothing like Oshkosh in the world. They get a waiver from the FAA to land 3 planes at the same time on the different colored dots. It's like this everyday all week. 10 000 airplanes, 600 000 people.

Oshkosh approach is CRAZY! I'm not a pilot, but it has to be one of the busiest fields in the country at that time of year.

Good skipper. "Shut that off." I want to make a version where the GNSS is all, "Traffic. traffic. traffic... WTF?!?!" This perfectly captures OSH arrival season. Well done.

Why did his guy not square up his pattern and then he lined up for the right when that runway was clearly not in use. Pretty shabby flying to be honest and I don't usually criticize people on line.

Thank you for posting this. I am a 700+ hour pilot and have flown in/out of Airventure 6+ times during slow and busy times. I was two aircraft ahead of your arrival in a Piper Lance. I was in the Rush Lake holding pattern too and got cut off by a twin - which shows how busy it was before even arriving to the runway. On base for Runway 36 I saw that B-29 ahead of me. (Awesome sight!) At 3:50 on short final I was instructed to go-around. You can hear the controller then instructing me to stay left of the runway and not overfly the crowd. At 8:51 I landed and was instructed into the grass. This was the most intense flying experience I've ever had. An experience (from holding to landing) that lasted about 30 minutes. Some suggestions for those planning to fly to Airventure: make sure you know every detail of the KOSH NOTAM that applies to your plans. Know your options (divert etc.) and be prepared to adapt/change your plan. Have a capable right-seater. Stay calm and fly the airplane.

Been there, done that. Had to follow a J-3 Cub with a Cessna Skylane, coming in. The Cub did a good job keeping his speed up. I had to fly over him, on landing, just like the war bird, in the video did. We ended up being stranded there for 6 days, due to storm fronts rolling through every day. We only intended to stay for 3 days.

I worked as volunteer for taxi assist and its very organized with a special NOTAM explaning all procedures. Last year they were landing on runway 18 busy as usual and a cherokee pilot tries to land 36 out of nowhere. This actually happened again several hours later with a Cessna trying to land 36 when ATC was clearing aircraft for 18. The FAA Tower personnel are all highly experienced at Oshkosh. They have eyes looking all over the sky. I was lucky to be on flightline during both the Cessna and Beach arrivals. Seeing 5 landing lights on final never end for ten minutes is impressive.

I remember working ground crew at airventure 2001. So many planes coming in at once. So much fun wing walking planes and parking them. Never seen so many rv's and long eezee's in my life.

I flow into KOSH in the late 80's. It was pretty hectic then, but not like this. It's time to scrap the old visual approaches and "rock your wings" stuff. Mode C or ADS-B should be mandatory with all arrivals contacting approach control for vectors to final. This low altitude last minute stuff will get people killed. This has become a full blown simultaneous intersecting runway operation, and it should be managed as one by the book. If warbirds want to do their flight of xx and overhead break it should be limited to specific time slots so not to impede the flow of arrival traffic.

Electronics and systems are no faster than this process espicaly with pilots of a multitude of aircraft flying in. It has been done safely for 50+ years this way all with a radio and pair of binoculars under FAA rules. Separation is well established over the ground tracks long before base and landing. Point landing and efficient runway exit is where airmen are falling apart. Get in line and do what you should know how to do since your solo, land on a 20 foot dot, slow down and taxi off the active.
