My brother teaches elementary and last year he turned me on to the Amazon Basics presharpened pencil 150 pack, they are great quality pencils and the 150 pack is less than $17 right now. I got 2 last year and just kept a cup of pencils at the back of the room and it was a total sanity saver for me when so many kids seem never to have a pencil! I do have a sign that pencils are 25¢ , but I say they "can borrow one for free" - I don't enforce the charge and it made free write days so much less stressful!

I inherited a massive paper cutter from the teacher I used to share a classroom with when he retired, it seriously is the best thing to have in the room!

I agree that proximity and eye contact are very effective and easy to do! Choices sometimes include presenting in different modes (writing versus speaking) or offering different reading or listening selections on the same topic and students can pick which one.

This is an area where I can always improve.
