Differences between 4WD VS AWD Cars
So you have seen an AWD and a 4WD but you cant tell the difference? #4wd #awd
A four wheel drive is a term that is not new to many, even the not so car enthusiasts. Some of these cars are boldly labeled 4×4 at the back.
It is important to note that there are Front Wheel Drives (FWD), Rear Wheel Drives (RWD) and these refers to which wheels the engine drivers either Front or Rear.
But let us look at these two modes an All-Wheel Drive (AWD) and a Four Wheel Drive (4WD). Terms that very few people can differentiate.
Four Wheel Drives are mostly large SUVs specifically made for very harsh conditions. Some examples of these 4WDs are the Land Rover Defender, Toyota Land Cruiser, Nissan Patrol among others.
A 4×4 uses a series of either front, center or rear differential that can be manually operated by a press of a button in newer models or pull a lever in older models to provide power to all four wheels when needed.
Some 4×4s offers either a high or low gear ranges. The low gear range is for maximum traction when off road while the high range is used for slippery road conditions like snow and ice or loose gravel.
There are two types of 4 wheel drives; a full time 4WD where all wheels are powered by the engine. In some designs, a driver can choose how to balance the power to either the front or the rear wheels.
The second type is part time 4WD where the power is mostly at the rear wheels of the vehicle and can also engage all fours when more traction is needed.
4×4s are more expensive and less fuel efficient compared to the AWD systems.
