The Good, The Bad & The Ugly: Episode #109
If we beat dundee 3rd is possible
Would certainly like to think so, but just want the focus on reaching top 6 for now... anything else is a bonus
Great show as always boys. Dens Park this weekend will be an interesting test of the new arrivals should any of them manage to work their way into the team for it. Going to be intriguing to see if Shanks starts as well. I think we desperately need another CB in as cover with the Halkett injury. Kabangu has eased my concerns about the attack considerably! If Shanks can salvage at least a half-decent second half to the season, we can send him on his way in the Summer and look for a replacement more comfortably. I'm optimistic about the types of guys we're bringing in this month, and pleased to see the club spending - and bringing in - decent transfer money. Aldo son... you and I will be having a wee tête-à-tête when I'm next through in Edinburgh after this outrageous CG slander 😜😂 Keep safe lads and catch you both soon. John
Bit of a difference in format this week due to a shortage of time - let us know what you think in the comments... all should return to normal in the not too distant future 👍🏻
What’s the name of the tune in the intro?
ua-cam.com/video/dCOO0MhvDRM/v-deo.htmlsi=PHLh9mTV0yISWSNZ Fantastic song from years ago featuring vocals from oor very own Ewen 👀 🔥
Ewen guesses 2012 for the last player to score a brace on his full debut, but it was a bit later. I knew this one because there's a funny story there. Was Uche Ikpeazu. 5-0 win over Inverness in July 2018 at Tynecastle. League Cup. I had a ticket but patched it for a girl I was seeing briefly. Spent all day with her in Bathgate. Was fuckin fizzing at myself for missing it when I saw the scoreline! Another great episode under rough circumstances lads. Alan, I respond to the question do I play Shankland in the ten with a question of my own: who plays in that role if not him? The answer to which is why I 100% start Shanks there.
Always appreciate the fact checking from your good self John ❤️
I'd be keen to see the Kabangu/Wilson front two again mind... Critchley to go 4-4-fucking 2 perhaps? 😂
We won more when Boyce was a regular he always linked up well and held the ball up and was effective at this even during the Covid era. He was never a goalscorer but he gave his all and when fit he played his part
That would be an UNDISCLOSED £600,000 Rowles is away for Ewen haha. All the best to the big Aussie. I rated him more highly than most like Alan. I'm fond of Rowles. On Grant, the occasional decent game is marred for me by his persistent fucking up in big games, be it by receiving a stupid red, making a daft decision / mistake or just generally being our least reliable midfielder. Critchley using him as much as he does is suggestive of either Critch's inability to suss his best eleven or us being in a worse state squad-wise than we thought. Granted the penalty save isn't something he can really control for sure, but it's a must-score opportunity and he's not done so. It's the latest among myriad failures. Of he and Boyce, Liam being the one to depart the club is just ridiculous. I've said it already and I'll repeat it one more time: Boyce being in the starting lineup in the 10 again was the catalyst for us finally winning back to back games this season. It's no coincidence we dropped points again after his departure. Hopefully Grant will prove serviceable enough until season's end, but he's in no way, shape or form fit to be offered an extension. The moves we're making in the market in terms of incoming players, I'm quite excited about. This being our first stab at it using Jamestown, I'm intrigued to see where the roster is come 1st February. We probably aren't close to done in the market. At least, I really hope not. In closing, great to see you back on the show Ewen! Haven't lost a step big guy. Jihn
All I'm going to say regarding Liam Boyce is, I said back in July in person to you when we went to the Leyton Orient game, these exact words: as Liam Boyce goes, so go Hearts. I believe I might have repeated it on the podcast back in the Summer as well. Boyce is now finally back in the starting lineup in the 10 role, and Hearts have finally won back to back matches in 24-25. This is not, I would argue, a mere coincidence. His being 33 is less a factor than most seem to think. I'd offer him a one-year extension in a heartbeat. He's proving he's still capable of playing at the heart of this attack. The proof is in the pudding. John
Don't disagree mate, but he wants to play regularly and hasn't been all season long aside from the last couple of games. Adore the man I really do, as you know - but we should be looking beyond a 33 year old leading the line. He'll definitely be a big loss, but the club have room to bring in a replacement which I'm fairly sure they'll do
Thanks for all the positive feedback on the socials for this week's episode - I'll try to actually look down the camera a bit more should I need to do this again 😂😂
Liam Boyce & Jorge Grant agree we can do better surely.
Definitely, although both have played themselves in to starting line ups for the time being, but as I say, medium/long term thinking we should be looking beyond them both imo
Right wing
Couldn't agree more, the wide options are lacking in pace... we need that to stretch teams for sure
👏🏻😎
Quality, confidence and ability is one thing. The lack of desire and effort completely floored me on Sunday. I am only starting to get over it! I agree the league is taking priority. Relegation is a possibility if the teams in the bottom 6 start winning. We are very lucky so far there has been a lot of draws so far. I thought after the Dundee game we were not going to start our season. I was wrong and we were diabolical. The players must stand up now! Also I still think scoring more is the biggest priority. So 1 or 2 strikers in January please and try being the CB (name?) back from St Johnstone.
Yeah certainly think we'll still prioritise a striker in January, as they've openly said that's what they need. Critchley did say the defensive situation will need to be looked at too. . I'd imagine a loan would be the target there, though
Even last year i know how to stop Hearts ,defend and catch them on the break, we struggle to break teams down so even Killie going down to 10 men i knew if they scored we would struggle to win or draw. We have 2 midfield players that don't play into gaps and our centre halfs cannot do it either. You mentioned Oda but he was coming back from injuries and it was a plastic pitch. Our wingers never get to the goal line to cross and neither our right back.
Couldn't agree more 👏
Rhys Mcabe is the gamble appointment!
Would be a huge step... reckon he'll be in the running for St Johnstone though for sure
Rangers fan. like watching all podcasts. Dont mind hearts. Why are use playing back the way? shanklin looks heavy? Hpe use can turn it around. The football is not free flowing.
Thanks Peter, yeah not sure what's gone wrong from last season to this... and we've not even hit the European schedule yet... which is a worry. Still enough time to turn things around but it's a hard watch right now.
After allowing “dust to settle” I’m hoping beyond hope that things will click but I’ve played football in different countries and I watch Hearts every week and all I can say is the players don’t know what Naismith is wanting from them and the anxiety of this is coming to the surface in various areas of the park and for different reasons. The problems I see, and this is only my opinion, is that the issues are so many that it has to be laid at the manager and coaches door. We know the abilities of the players, yes we have certain players who are “limited” but a good manager and coach would allow for that. We have Celtic and then St Mirren away. I won’t be surprised if Naismith resigns after our trip to Paisley.
If "we were good in the first 15 minutes" - how many chances did we create during that time?
Agreed- as we said as the episode went on, we didn't create enough, which has been the issue for weeks. It's the typical reasonable build up followed by a final product being the wrong one.
Boyce and Oda are not Hearts standard
There he is! Welcome back Ewen, was a privilege to fill in for you, and I look forward to joining you boys again for a chat. My boys are back together ❤ the football barely registers a blip by comparison. The football's been pish mind you...
Definitely a winnable tie over both legs. 100% agree that we never had enough pre season games.
Good to see Ewen back 🎉
The thing about Shankland's goal was that as soon as he was through on goal I was out of my seat ready to celebrate. Never crossed my mind that he wouldn't score, was just a question of how he would score. The dink was just brilliant.
The Kingsley right back was to show Steve Clark he can play there
I got called lego head at work today... I can see it now 😂 booking in with my barber ahead of next episode 💇♂️
Did our Ewen get lost on the way to commentating the golf or horseracing? Nice jacket son!
We have been cheated in the remaining games only 2 games at home
Yeah, was expecting 3 at home. Our away record is strong so I'm not complaining too much
Two home games against Dundee (winnable) and Rangers (could be tough considering they'll still be on the hunt for the title... Let's just wrap up third after the first game v Killie
Ewen lad you gave the Killie game as much coverage as it warranted anyway mate. Great to see you boys back.
Enough to put us to sleep John... could have used multiple seats to lounge across eh 😂😂
Robbie the last person to score 30
Aye, 31 in the 87-88 season.. we were both born after that 😂 mental
Clear penalty, everyone in the stadium seen it so why not the ref
Halkett was shocking
Yeah he dropped a stinker, still worth a contract extension though IMO
Nice podcast. I'm guessing Frankie Mcavoy and Lee Mcculloch won't be getting a Christmas card this year!? 😂😂
That obvious was it? 😂
Congratulations on a hundred boys! Just tuning in now...
❤️ thanks mate
If we lose to motherwell, Naismith has to go.
Naisy aint a manager, hearts need experience. I would honestly consider joey barton even though hes nuts. And even though budget wise this is mental but ole gunnar might be a shout, great with molde, can easily handle pressure and has good contacts in the game.
If we lose to motherwell, Naysmith has to go.
Agreed... his time is surely coming to a end sooner or later at this point
Alan puts up with me ranting and raving and complaining every weekend so aye I'd agree he's had a more frustrating time 😂
Always a pleasure man, we wouldn't be Jambos if we didn't have something to rant about 😂
Disclaimer folks - apologies for the dodgy audio/visuals in the first half - but much like Hearts this season, performance improves in the second half 👍🏻❤️
I agree it was so stupid to move 3 players to accommodate 1 although would Halliday cope with the speed of Boyle .
A fully match fit Halliday probably could have - I'm guessing he just didn't have the legs for it.
Here's one that people won't like. There's 7000 on the season ticket waiting list. If the costs aren't prohibitive, why not do a season at Murrayfield, sell 30000 season tickets and allow 20000 away tickets. I know Murrayfield is awful, but could doubling income from tickets for a season be invested into the team to make a substantive improvement?
Would rather James Anderson just keeps his benefactor status coming in 😂 Budge brought him on board.... so there's that going for her 😂 Murrayfield is a horrific for football, good idea in theory but I'll pass
@alanscrimgeour3678 Yeah, me too but there needs to be a way to monetise those 7000 on the waiting list. I remember the Murrayfield days. There were awful but it was good being able to get the tram right to the door.
If you heard what the wee teams football commentary last night we gobed the result.
Don't pay attention to the wee team anyway 😂
Great show again lads but Remoaner Alan needs to stop blaming Brexit on everything 😂😂👍
Rowles needs to be put out on loan to strengthen up in a lower league. He can't head a ball and gets muscled off the ball like he isn't even there. With those deficiencies, he's no use to Hearts. A run in the Championship or league 1 is exactly what he needs.
Think as we say, Rowles needs to be managed properly. We'd never suggest throwing a player to the side, but in this instance he could do with a bit of a break - but again there is the point of not throwing toys out the pram this early and just letting the team settle in together... its a tricky situation that's for sure
@siwypod So we just continue to allow his lack of fundamental skills required of centre backs in our game to cost us defeats? It's not "throwing the toys out the pram" to identify a players weaknesses and doing something about improving them. Burying your head in the sand and ignoring what's clearly apparent helps no one. He needs loaned out so he can work on heading the ball and bulking up.
Late to the party but that intro is maaaaagnificent. Looking forward to your reaction to the 2nd leg! What. A. Match.
Glad you enjoyed it mate, thanks for the feedback 👏
Good stuff as always boys, love your new intro song. What is it? Cheers 👍
Thanks for the feedback mate - greatly appreciated. The new intro song is "Tasteless Living" by MACHU - vocals are our very own Ewen... he's a talented lad so he is (he also didn't even pay me to say that 😂)
@@siwypod No fucking way! That's our Ewen??
Alan knows he'd never hear the end of it from me if he didn't pick Gordon haha
100% factored in to my decision making - I get slaughtered enough for opinions 😂
@@alanscrimgeour3678 😂😂😂
Any Hearts fan that doesn't love Haring needs their head checked. The man is glorious.
Another brilliant podcast lads 👏🏻👏🏻
Cheers, thanks for listening 👍🏻❤️
What do you think of our predictions? Will either of us finally predict a correct scoreline 👀😂
What I loved about this game was when we needed goals, Naismith brought on attacking players. Back in the days of Neilson, when we needed goals, he'd have brought on defensive midfielders. It will take time to get over the damage Neilson did but Naismith is the man to do it.
Think it just makes a massive difference having the strong bench to call upon. Very pleasing indeed
