For those interested in how watch jewels are made there is a video on tick tock guru that shows how jewels for ships chronometers were made for WW2. Its by the Elgin Watch Company and is in old black and white but shows the process of how jewels are made. Its very informative and quite interesting.

Jewels/rubies that are essentially pink colored sapphire are the most common, but what if I want jewels that are red or purple? Who do you buy your watch jewels from?

I always thought they used rubies or synthetic rubies... As someone who has machined a number of materials over the years I can imagine cutting into sapphire is probably a slow and tedious process... I mean I used to cut most of my material with tungsten carbide bits but sapphire is harder than that.

Well said. I wish you much success. I’ve seen several small American watch shops open in the last 20 years and I hope it continues. I love mechanical watches. I’m in my 60’s of course, but I think even younger generations are starting to see the beauty and design in timepieces like yours. There is just something about a well made watch. I’ve worn one my whole life and feel naked without one on the wrist.

It is truly inspirational that a professional watchmaker is recommending hand cleaning, while most amateurs and UA-cam charlatans are singing praises for ultrasonic cleaning. Keep up the good work. Also, I subscribed after watching the first video, partly because you didn't ask to subscribe.

Sept 2024 Veterans Watchmaking Initiative Update: Spoke with admissions, you test for an admissions spot. If selected you attend a 6 week Quartz Technician class as the prerequisite to the full Watchmaker Program that lasts 16 months. There COULD be as much as a 1.5 to 2 year waiting period between both programs, but you must complete the 6 week course to be considered for their regular program.
