The only time I attended the state fair was in the 1960s. The only thing I remember about that experience was seeing a two headed calf.

My mom's people are all from Hinton/Nimitz. I know this place backwards and forwards. I used to walk my blind/deaf cousin across the bridge to the drugstore for candy. My cousin is the pharmacist there. My brother, Stanley, was one of the town doctors.

My Aunt Phyllis Bowling lived in the brown house on the right-hand side of the road just ahead.

I was at the cemetery last summer, I have several family members buried in this cemetery, the grass needed cut, a few headstones had grass growing up so much you couldn't read them. The cemetery in this video looks really good. The care for this cemetery needs to be better.

Im a Descendant of people of this town Mercer County Princeton and Roanoke with a Family tree dating back to 1690, Grandmother Iris Elaine "Basham maiden name" ...was born here and her husband my grandfather Arnold C McElyea and her Mom and Dad was from Matoaka. His Name Was Arley Basham " he was a Pastor and Jeweler and jewelry store owner and her momma was Aiola Shrewsbury "Maiden name" they left town in the 1950s after my grandfathers service in US Navy WW2 to move to Toledo ohio to then work at Libby glass. If she were still alive to see this drone footage of her old mountain home, she'd probably cry with Joy and sadness. To see it still here but see it the ghost of what it used to be. Thanks for sharing. ❤

They used to have a carnival wher the train station is now every year in late 70s and early 80s i grew up there. Worked for the town 4 summers on the jtpa program they had for youths back in the day. Emmett Painter was our boss.

I am going to Welch this weekend to check out a few homes for sale.. Nice scenery and looks bigger than Quinwood where my previous house/hideaway was.

Cool, i had an 'encounter' with someone in Welch about 8 years ago, she had a nice house and the neighborhood was fine, a drug store down the street had the 1908 flood marked on their building, wondering if thats the same drug store?

Another dead town. Over the decades ma and pa shops closed and the shopping centers/walmart took people out of the downtowns. In Athens, Ohio, Walmart moved in and the small downtown of Athens died, as did JC Penny, Kmart, and every other clothes shop. Walmart literally destroyed and shut down the only shpping mall they had.

I was born there and went back to Bluefield the year you filmed this. Very clean town. The sky was beautiful the day you were filming.

Wytheville, there's only one!! Named for George Wythe, first Virginian, to sign the Declaration of Independence! He was also the mentor of Thomas Jefferson!

Thank you James for this tour. I studied at VPI and lived in Blacksburg in 1972-73. I think I recognized the place where a sub shop called Choosie Mothers was located, at the crossing of Main & College Streets, it was owned by Bruce Thompson. I worked there along with several friends who also studied at VPI and were from Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela, Spain, and, of course, the USA. We all had a great time there and have fond memories of the town. Looks quite different now, but really good.
