Ten years ago, @homeofbombay and Heatherwick Studio partnered to transform an old water-powered paper mill in the heart of Hampshire into a distillery at Laverstoke Mill. The project involved the meticulous restoration of over forty derelict buildings, along with the addition of two cascading glasshouses - heated by the warm air generated during the distillation process - to display the botanic...

Heatherwick Studio reimagines South Miami’s Sunset Place

We are working with Midtown Development to create new walkable streets and permeable buildings on the site of an under-loved and closed-off shopping mall. We'll introduce intimate alleyways and flexible spaces that cater to local businesses, gyms, independent stores, and pop-up ventures; while above this village, new homes will add density and bring more people and life to the area.

Heatherwick Studio is working on a project for Hanwha Galleria, one of Seoul’s best-known department stores. Hanwha Galleria lies at a major crossroad framing the Han River in the distance. Located in the Apgujeong-dong neighbourhood in Seoul, our project acts as a focal point between the residential and the shopping districts of Gangnam and responds to the city's vision to revitalise the banks...

Great gin!
Love your work. Any emerging residential architects in London you recommend?
fantastic work
Omg...fantastic
Favelas of South Miami.😂
I went to see their site, This studio, which I believe sets new records for architectural monstrosity, already shows its disappointing potential through its renderings. And on top of that, it’s going to take ten years of construction to see this disappointing array of towers and shops, as if we were in China. I’m very, very worried when I see their past projects. When a project looks stunning on paper, the reality is often underwhelming; so, when the design already looks awful on paper, I can hardly imagine what it will be like in real life. When will elegance be taught in architecture?
Sunset plaza should stay the way it is. There’s no need to tear down a shopping center and replace it with something new. Add more housing to surrounding areas, that should help with foot traffic. Also, the welds on Vessel in NYC needs to be inspected regularly, the structure just doesn’t seem safe. Why build such a pointless structure and put people at risk?
Why are we letting out-of-town developers dictate what they want to do for South Miami? This is not right. Shame on you people allowing this to happen. Also, anything taller than 5 stories is a tragedy for this area. Do the residents get a voice to sound off on this ridiculous project? I'm not trying to sound like a NIMBY, but what's fair is what's fair for this area's growth. This is not it.
I understand the need to build and am glad that this firm intends to put intentionality to the future design. However I am nervous by how people's fond memories are brushed aside to build. I don't intend to sound like a NIMBY. Please by all means build but don't say Sunset was ugly. The limestone waterfall is a treasure. The ringed tower represented the optimism of 1999. All I'd ask is that the iconography of the old space is honored in its evolution. Some homage or preservation of the same kinds of spots that people still came there for. A nice cinema, an arcade, a small tea shop that's the venue of countless new up and coming bands.
No to 30 story high rise buildings. Irresponsible development. The infrastructure for roads, water & sewer is already overstressed as it is.
What killed Sunset places none of the above! Greedy cash grabbing landlords charging ridiculous rent don't care if you stay or not after your lease expires ridiculous paying for parking for customers that are coming to your mall to spend money no safety no security for the businesses or the people visiting the mall every big company that left left because of crime and lack of safety Niketown back in the day numerous robberies mayor's Jewelers numerous robberies even shot the security guard for the last straw.
Sunset Place needs retailers like Ross,DSW, Martials, Bed Bath and Beyond to move in along with banks ,restaurants and cellphone companies.
They cant fill current retail spaces but want to build more.😂
Horrific!!!!!! The new FAVELA at Sunset Place…the massive, brutalist buildings will ruin the skylight for everyone around it.
Favelas of South Miami 😂
A few more years to go and I will be the part of the team.... Heatherwick studio is the dream to me
how I wish I had the chance to interact with you guys during my school days
Love this idea.
Why? It will do nothing for South Miami.
Sunset Place is the right size for the City of South Miami, it already has apartments and people have lived there and the place also has plenty of parking .Sunset Place should be advertised and storefronts should be opened facing 57th avenue to promote pedestrian foot traffic ,something the building housing the Wholefoods didnt do with South Miami commisioners consent.
Whose pockets are South Miami comissioners in ?
A London architectural firm? AMERICA FIRST.
ahahahaha are you joking? after the mid 20th century America knows how to build only highways and parking lots.
Foreigners trashing South Miami. These buildings will be so tall that everyones backyard in South Miami will be visible.
I have to agree. We cannot continue to let out-of-town developers ruin this community.
@@AndrewCrazyhero No one is joking. People want smart growth, not 30 story towers hovering over their neighborhoods. This is not it. South Miami is not zoned for high rises like Downtown/Brickell or even Dadeland.
@@MrMelgibstein Not only that. These monstrosities are eyesores that don't complement South Miami's past in any way.
Was interesting and doable until the four monolith buildings popped up.. no one cares about this community only want to develop it into oblivion.. Shame on the south Miami commission for approving yet another disaster for this space
Disgusting what these commissioners have done,I wonder what they're are getting out of it.
It's called "kickbacks".
@thedirtybubble9613 🎶Welcome to Miami 🎵 Bienvenidos a Miami 🎶 South Miami in this particular case.
In my youth it was widely known that folks in South Miami did not want outdoor restaurant sidewalk seating. There were then and there are now contrary Marys, i.e., folks who seek to keep changes from happening. There may indeed be valid reasons for fearing too much density but if the fear is justified then Plan Bs need to be brought to the table.
멋지당
🩷wow!!
Yes!!! Build it!
Arquitectura para humanos vs. arquitectura para carros. Así de sencillo.
Let's get it right this time!
Terrible. More high rises? More traffic. Buildings look horrible. Will cover the sky. There are better ideas than to place more apartment buildings and a hotel. Hope it doesnt materialize.
Too funny, Owner cant fill current retail spaces but promises to bring more retail spaces to a mamouth project.😂
Yup!!!
We like the old part of the city because it’s less congested! Because it has more soul, which I guarantee you this will not have. We don’t need 1500 units to add population density we already have it. Give me a break!
After reading the PDF 212pages and all the details (pavers, wall, colors...) Horrible! I know tastes are personal and subjective, but class and refinement are not... (Sorry to be so direct maybe it's because I live in south miami and am more concerned)
Where we can see that PDF...
@@AndreaB1286 How strange-the PDF seems to have been removed from the site. I have it on my HD but it is big 175MB , may be ask Thomas Heatherwick
LOVE IT!! Live near by, CAN NOT WAIT! Super excited, great job, i hope it really ends up looking this cool and nice
pedestrian only alley ways! how exciting. maybe something Instagram worthy, like those colorful umbrellas
Glad to see the idea of brining back a large tree that used to be in the entrance of Sunset Place.
i feel a human concept behind, a strong concept. that is the future: material details, human scale. we need to be poetic, romantic, artistic...sensual.....diferent shapes, different materials in the same project.
It won’t be the “City of Pleasant Living” for sure anymore. Even now when I’m walking the dog around town I have to be constantly avoiding cars through our streets. I see plastic bottles with urine from people who come around town at night. There are already 2 more bars opening on the same street as Bougainvillea’s Old Tavern, meaning 3 bars in one short street. This beautiful city will start changing its face with more and more buildings that cover the sky view from our homes and full of people and businesses everywhere. Horrible.
Those pee bottles were all me, sorry.
@@sergioisevilthat can’t be because I recall doing the same thing
In my "good old days" there was a bakery facing US-1. There was a shop where you could buy day old bread. There was a restaurant on US-1 near the bakery. There was a bookstore where the man would yell at anyone who was not an adult and who had the nerve to pick up a book. Now there places where you can sit outside and have a bite to eat. It has evolved into a much more pleasant place than it was. It is indeed the "City of Pleasant Living." May the evolution continue.
This will be great for South Miami! I can’t wait to see more.
