St. John African Methodist Episcopal Church is the first African-American church established during the antebellum period . The original congregation of St. John’s were a small group of ex-slaves chartered in 1836. The group continued to grow, and service members moved to 2261 E.40th Street in 1908. As racial tensions continued to increase after World War I, membership grew to over 3,000 after World War II. Previous speakers hosted at St. John AME include Booker T. Washington, W.E.B. Dubois, and Marian Anderson for her first concert in Cleveland in 1919. St. John AME was recognized as a Cleveland Historical Landmark in 1974 and was placed on the National Register of Historical Places in 1982.

Scripture Lesson: Colossians 3:17-24
Key Verse: Colossians 3:23
17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
18 Wives, be subject to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.
19 Husbands, love your wives, and do not be harsh with them.
20 Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.
21 Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged.
22 Slaves, obey in everything those who are your earthly masters, not with eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but in singleness of heart, fearing the Lord.
23 Whatever your task, work heartily, as serving the Lord and not men,
24 knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward; you are serving the Lord Christ.
