Just wondering,why rat terrier? In The UK terriers are named for whatever breed they are. For instance,Jack Russel,border,norfolk etc, but described as "ratters" for the job they do.

My Rattie was the smartest dog that I ever met. He would do abstract things to fool my Jack Russel, much to his enjoyment. I miss Pepper greatly.

Our rat terrier pomeranian mix is spoiled senselessly. Got me cooking liver and bringing her ribs. I call her "my little dinner companion" who only shows up for meals. Precious little girl!

i have a pit/rat terrier/GSD/lab mix. after watching multiple videos on rat terriers i can tell thats where he gets his personality and coat from. he is only 45 lbs and super spunky, does not care for any new dogs and just wants to be with hi human friends all the time. great off switch too! god forbid anything happens to him i think i would definitely get a full rat terrier next time

I just lost my little rat terrier Kileigh 4 days ago and I have loved many pets over the years but she was so special. The vet is still baffled at what was wrong with her. she developed a cough but seemed healthy other than that he ran tests and could find nothing wrong. she ate and drank very well and was active. 2 weeks ago the cough stopped all together and she started breathing fast. the vet took x rays and she was showing signs like she had pneumonia still ate very good and was very active with a normal temperature. He put her on predizone (sp?) seemed to help until the last 3 days then she started breathing hard again (still eating and drinking very good but could not walk short distances without panting hard). he put her on antibiotics and did a bronchial wash - 5 hours after the bronchial wash she passed away. The vet said he has never seen anything like it and asked permission to remove part of her lung to send off to be tested. my whole family is heart broken she was by far the best pet ever had.

I had many dogs growing up all were mutts and not very smart. One day in my 50's I decided I needed another dog after building my new home on 40 acres that was next to a national forest. I stopped by the local Humane Society to see what they had and saw the cutest puppies that I knew my wife would fall in love with. Not knowing what they were I took one and found out later that it was a rat terrier and the smartest dog I had ever owned. I learned that throwing a ball expecting the dog to chase it and bring it back. The dog jumped up and caught the ball before it hit the ground. I never took the time to train him since he seemed to know what what I wanted him to do. I have now retired and live in Thailand, I bought a couple of Jack Russell's terriers but found they are not as good as a rat terrier. I am wondering how I could buy some rat terriers from America and introduce them to Thailand. Any one,have any ideas?

Just put my 16 yo down. She was a good dog. I highly recommend this breed, but DO take care of their teeth. We could have done a better job with this. Also, I pretty sure they were bread in England.

The rudest dog in my neighborhood is a Jackhuahua. Half Jack Russel half Chihuahua.

They are IMHO incredible dogs I am on my 4th one and each of the last 3 I lost were my kids and I cannot even describe how heart broken the loss of each one was. If you like a dog to do stuff with and is also loyal and loving the rat terrier is the dog to get.

I have a Standard Poodle and she is the best dog ever. She's 8 years old. She's very protective, affectionate and loyal. She's a great dog and I love her very much. I couldn't imagine life without her. She is very smart and learns tricks right away without me even really teaching her. She is eager to please and always wants to do things to make me happy.

I am now a new owner of a rat terrier I received him as a gif when he was 8 weeks old. I live alone. But on occasion I have company and family members to drop in. He is very friendly. I guess he's one of a kind LOL I find him very hard to train especially to housebreak. He can be outdoors for 15 to 30 minutes and come in and urinate as soon as he steps inside. Which he does very very often! As far as wanting to play he's always ready to do that, and he's very fast. He's very curious. He is into everything! I find them very stubborn when he goes outside to play which I have to assist him, for he'll run away at any given chance. He is terrified of water! I'm thinking it may be he was sprayed with a water hose before I got him. No evidence of that, but I wonder, giving him a bath it's like giving a wild cat a bath. So I haven't exposed him but to one bath. And he is in desperate need of another one. LOL he wants to eat anything that I eat. But he is very picky I've tried several dog foods dry and can. Which he does not have a liking to. I really don't know what to give him that would be healthy besides table food, cuz he won't eat anything else. Poor baby. I try to starve him down so he'll eat his dog food. Not! I'm sorry for him so I'll put together some food that he will eat it's small quantities so it won't make him sick. He's not a Barker! But he sure is a whiner. Runs me crazy. Even though I do love him. I find him quite hemorous at times. He does the cutest things. But he is a naughty boy. I would not recommend him at all for an elder person. And because of maybe breaking the ligaments in his ears I wouldn't recommend him for children even though he loves to play with children. If you have a rat terrier love him. If you don't have one, good!

I just got a 3-4 month old rat terrier but he's pretty freaking crazy and hard to train he likes biting too much and isn't all the way house trained yet plus he chews everything he can get his paws on lol

My rat terrier, named Nutmeg, yawns in a very expressive way. She goes, "Heeeeya!" whenever she yawns, and when she's excited about a walk, it sounds happy, but when someone is taking too long to do something, like making her food, it sounds disappointed. Does anyone else know a dog who talks by yawning, or is it just a Nutmeg thing?

I had a rat terrier for 16 years, lost her in 1998 and to this day people remember her fondly. She was the most loving, mischievous, and intelligent dog ever. Miss her!!!

I always heard rat was a nickname for jack Russell fox terrier min pin or chiushua terrier mixes. Rat terrier us busy a nickname they was not a real breed It's like so called pit bulls are most usually mixes that people get wrong all the time. It's a bull dog mix Because they bolt when the see a chipmunk bird or squirrel. Or they chased off nice and rats in Victoria. Edwardian period.
