Maples in the garden

Приєднався 24 бер 2024
This is a channel that showcases my passion for Japanese Maples and how the garden evolves through time. While the focus is Japanese maples, I'm an avid plant collector so many plant varieties are discussed.
I'm Mariano, I started gardening in late 2020 - right after the Covid pandemic hit. Fell in love with Japanese Maples and gardening altogether.

Maples in the garden First video! Spring 2024 - Part 1
I just got this one, and I am so excited!
One of my favorites! Great choice.
Oh man all your maples are so incredible.
Thanks!
Your Umbrela pine looks great! How are you taking care of it?
Thanks! I actually don’t do anything to it, it’s the easiest plant for me. It’s in a pot.
Which was the one with all those colors right before Attaryi?
It’s Acer Takesimense. Really a beautiful tree during the fall, very consistent.
👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Unas arces preciosos .
Thanks for the great video! 🙂
Glad you liked it!
Your maples are amazing as always 😍
Thank you! Cheers!
Love it!! Great job
Thank you!
Beautiful! Which varieties would you say have done the best in the heat while maintaining color in your collection?
Thank you! Several have done quite well. Black Lace, Anne Irene, Sherwood Elfin, Amagi Shigure, Noel, Sunny and anything variegated.
@ awesome. I’m currently growing moonfire, hot sauce, hot blonde, Monticello gardens, seiryu and orangeola in central tx in containers
I’m not very familiar with Monticello gardens, I believe it’s a dissectum? How do you like it?
This summer was very brutal for my tress in NC as well. Goodness!!!
Hopefully you didn’t get impacted by the hurricane!
He’s back!!! Man I’ve been waiting for this!!
How are the maples doing?? Miss your videos!
Hey there! Thanks for reaching out. It’s been a rough season for the maples… I’ll be adding more videos once they start to show Fall colors, in a couple of weeks. Stay tuned!
Thank you for takings us through your garden!
Thank you for watching!
We want to help with the garden, clari and I🥰
Come visit and help me!!! ❤️
The garden looks great! Nice to have rain.
Thanks! It’s been a strange season weather wise.
🥰 someday I will walk through my own maple garden 😍
You can do it!
amazing collection!!
Thank you!!
Your collection is unbelievable. Must be a lot of work!
Thank you! It’s not too much work and the work is my therapy!
🏆 goes to Amagi shigure 😃👍, so lovely in your garden !! The Bananapeel Iliceums are fun, I like em!
Amagi is a champ! And the illiciums are great for winter interest. Thanks for watching!
Do you agree that the japonicums have some of the best long lasting color on the JM?
Japonicums are the best for Fall color!
What was the tree to the left of Morton @ 25:51
That one is Sharp’s pigmy
All things considered your garden looks great. I can’t believe you have kept up this far!
Thank you!
why are they all in pots? do you bring them inside in winter ?
Mostly because I collect so many and I don’t have room to put them in the ground!
Great video, your plant selection is unique. Where did you buy Ligularia ‘Garden Confetti’ ?
I got it at a nursery in Hendersonville, NC
Where did you buy your Japanese maples? They are healthy and have many varieties.🙏🙏
Thanks! I got them from many different places, some local nurseries and many from online sellers like MrMaple, maplestone, etc.
Have you ever counted how many maples there are in your garden?😊
I have over 250!
In wintertime I said I miss summer. But this summer is so hot that I will never say that again. Enjoy the chill my brother.
I’m already missing warmer weather. It’s been very cold and humid!
Very interesting to see the plats we have inside, grow like this in the ground outside 🤩
It's so hot here it would be nice to be in Argentina right now! I enjoyed your video. Thanks for sharing.
Been here for two weeks and the cold is getting old! Thanks for watching.
I know the feelings. My Summer Gold Japanese maple is burning.
Hope things are looking better now!
Thank you for another amazing video! I see most of your maples are growing in glazed pots. Do you prefer these types of pots over the typical terra-cotta clay?
Yes, glazed pots are my preference. They offer more protection in the winter. Also, terracotta pots are porous so watering is more challenging as water dissipates.
Thank-you for the garden tour! - so many really cool plants in your collection, wonderful variety of colors and texture - I’m in northern VA and it hasn’t rained here at all this June, bracing for my water bill 😬
Thanks for watching! It actually rained yesterday, much needed. Sending rain vibes your way 🌧️
Hello from the other side of the world, Bulgaria. We have the same problem here. My Orangeola and Skeerat´s broom look dead in 2 days time. They were hit by hail and a lot of heat the days after. Five more maples are looking bad. It is strange that your maples are feeling the heat because most of them are in shade. Are you afraid that they will root rot if you water them more? I learn a lot from your videos and I hope to see all your beautiful maples recover! 🥰 This red star hibiscus is amazing! Never seen that kind before!
So sorry to hear about our your maples! We share the maple pains. It’s so dry that I’m not worried about root rot, even in the shade the conditions are awful! The hibiscus are looking great! There’s a different one that bloomed today. Thanks for watching!
@@Maplesinthegarden is it the first summer like that for your garden? For us this year the heat come too early. I can't wait to see the garden in Argentina.
I’m sorry some of your trees are struggling. I live near Richmond, VA and we haven’t had rain since June 2nd. I have been hand watering my garden and like you some do my trees are struggling. I’ve moved my struggling trees to an area where they get 2-3 hours of morning light and then are in shade the rest of the day. I hope your trees recover!
Let’s hope for better conditions for our maples! Thanks for sharing your garden ❤️
Fellow Atlanta JM lover here. The roots are showing on Autumn Fire at 20:28, so perhaps a layer of mulch would help to reduce the heat stress on that plant. I am in awe of your collection!
Thanks for the suggestion, I’ll do that. I typically don’t cover the root flare but I’ll inspect what’s going on there more carefully. Great to see another ATL JM lover!
Same story here in NW Alabama. Your garden looks nice despite the heat. It's been oppressive 90s for days and days more. Hopefully, we all get the much needed rain soon!
The funny thing is that I was awaken in the middle of the night by a thunderstorm out of nowhere. So we did get some rain but it didn’t lasted long.
Yes, we need rain - lots of it! 🌧️ We have all our potted plants under umbrellas- Kennesaw
The thing is I was awaken in the middle of the night by a thunderstorm so we did get some rain over here in Atlanta! It didn’t rain at all there?
@@Maplesinthegarden not a drop in over 12 days.
@@anabrockway2065 it was the same here until this storm popped up overnight. Maybe uploading a video with a We need rain message made it happen 😂
You have some of the most spectacular maples, especially in the south! I would love to know your secret weapon you’re using to fight off Phyllosticta and Anthracnose fungal diseases. I’m a few miles west of you in Alabama and the humidity is bringing the spots pretty bad. Any tips?
Thanks for your comment! I do have fungal issues on many of them, on top of spider mites and Japanese beetles. And this sudden warm weather is causing wrecks on many of them, leaves are changing colors and dropping. So no super powers here. Most of the maples are under a tree canopy which helps but I’m not doing anything special!
New subscriber here, 🤩 wow your Hana Matoi is electric!! What light conditions made it this way? I saw one last week amongst other many weeping reds at a local nursery and it was so boring and disappointing, forgettable light green and dull pink, low graft but very mature in a 15g container - I couldn’t stomach paying $200 for it (on sale from $300) - but seeing yours makes me think about it again, maybe in the fall when it’s 1/2 price I’ll swoop it up if it’s still there, sadly because of budget and upcoming summer heat I think I’m done buying trees this spring 😢
Did you see my Manyo in this video? I don’t think I captured it on this one? I love the variety. But right now it’s variegated with a two tone green.
@@Maplesinthegarden 😳 oops I meant Hana Matoi! Don’t know why I typed Manyo, my cat got me up way too early - anyway, so what light conditions does yours receive? Thank-you!
Hana Matoi has kept its colors longer than usual this year! It seems to like the dappled shade it gets all day. No direct sun. I’ve seen folks growing it in full sun though.
@@Maplesinthegarden it is stunning, I know you must really enjoy it - Thank-you!
Your maples are always perfect! I love the tours you make and show us 🥰 Nice to see what I can expect from my small maples at home 😂
Thank you so much. Some of them are far from perfect lol glad you enjoyed the videos!
Nice tour. Yup that’s exactly what I do when I see spiders in my yard… just keep walking. They’re everywhere, you got to love them 😊
After all, they are beneficial!
How many Japanese maples do you have in your collection? They are beautiful. I’ve only been collecting 2yrs now. This week I’ve been repotting some of mine. This week in Central NC my Amagi Shigure is really showing off with the dark green veining on the pink reticulated leaves.
I have about 250 varieties give or take. Amagi Shigure is such a neat variety! That one and Firefly are fantastic.
@@Maplesinthegarden Wow 250! I love it!!! I think I’m between 40 to 50 maples. I have almost completed the Ghost Series with missing only Sister Ghost and Martha Ghost. I did get a Snow Kitten and so far it looks great. I feel I need to baby that one a bit.
It’s an addiction! Lol My first Snow kitten died but I gave in and got another one. It’s stunning , but finicky. Keep collecting!
I am drawn to variegation, too. What was the name of the first tree you showed? Green with heavy variegation. Very impressive, and you said it holds that variegation. ❤
Yes! It’s very consistent. The name is ‘Kumoi nishiki’
Awesome! Thank you@@Maplesinthegarden
@@Maplesinthegarden That one I must find🩷
Hermoso jardín párese un bosque encantado se ve k se respira mucha paz
Muchas gracias! Es mi terapia y me desconecta de todo 👍
I really appreciate your Japanese maples. 👍👍How can we prevent them from burning their leaves? 🙏🙏
Either you move it to a place with no afternoon sun, or you let it get its leaves burnt for a couple of seasons, most varieties will adapt after some time. Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much, my dear friend for another great video. Thanks for sharing your beautiful garden with us.
Thank you for watching! Hope you’re well.
😍
Beautiful garden!
Thank you so much!
