HOW TO MAKE HANDMADE HORSE TREATS I COMPLETE TUTORIAL
Hey guys! I owned a horse treat company called Royalty and Reins Bakery on Instagram and sold lots of fancy, hand-decorated horse treats. Today, I'm showing you exactly how you can make them yourself at home!
Ingredients for cookie:
-Flour of choice
-Water
-Molasses
Ingredients for icing:
-Water
-Powdered sugar
-Pasteurized egg whites or meringue powder
(Optional):
-Food coloring
-Sprinkles
Directions for cookie:
-Combine 1 part water, 2 parts molasses, and 8 parts flour
-Roll out and cut dough then bake at 350 degrees for 30-35 minutes until the bottom edges of the cookie are slightly browned
Directions for icing:
-Add a whole bag of powdered sugar to a mixer and slowly add the egg whites until you get desired texture
-Thin the base icing out with water as necessary
-Add food coloring and flavoring if desired
Decorate & enjoy!
*IMPORTANT*
-These are horse treats-just exactly that-a treat. They obviously contain sugar between the icing and molasses, but are fine to give as a snack once in a while as long as your horse has no dietary restrictions. If you're ever concerned about what you can and cannot feed your specific horse, please contact your vet!

Where do you get your molasses and egg whites?🫶
@@jensen.equestrian the grocery store:)
wait guys can horses eat flour??
What OTHER food coloring would you recommend? I don't think i can get that brand where i live...
@@willowacademyWillSchroeder any food coloring is fine
How healthy are these for them? My ponies are on a diet...........
Just to be safe I wouldn’t
This is not hate at all, you probably know better then me but I thought horses could not eat flour. If you know please tell. Again this is not hate.
Horses can eat flour, certainly I wouldn’t use it in my treats if they couldn’t!
is there an alternative to eggwhites in the icing????
You can use water but it won't set as hard and will easily dent.
@@slbequine4624 okay ty❤️
My icing is way too thin and get kinda clear! Any advice?
sounds like you need more powdered sugar!
My cookies seemed to shrink the next day, or the frosting lifted off. They come out perfect once I frost them but the next day the icing falls off, how to fix this? I tried poking holes but it didnt help
I'm sorry I've never had this problem so I'm not sure I can help. Is there too much flour on the top of your cookie? Sometimes I would have to dust off my cookies with a paper towel to ensure the icing sticks.
Thank you so much
Hello, can I take sugar instead of Molasses ?
No, you need something sticky like molasses to keep the dough together
So you did say you had a business. Could you link it so I can check it out please?
I don't anymore unfortunately. My instagram account is still up if you want to see the old treats I used to sell! It's @royalty_and_reins_bakery
These are awsome
I made them a month ago or something and all the ponies loved them!
you can use all purpose flour if you cannot find oat flour
@@berit286 Thank you! I did make them a month ago or something and all the ponies loved them!
Very clever and talented.. and patience
So much patience…. 😅 thank you for the kind words!!
What is the shelf life for the cookies with icing? Does it last for months in an airtight container without the icing going bad?
Yes! Up to six months stored correctly.
What kind of food coloring did you use??
I like the Americolor brand gel food coloring, you can get it on amazon!
I hope I get to make these soon I usually bring mints or something like that so I hope I get to the this recipe soon because I love baking but I’m away from home right now to help with my cousins for the new year’s lol and I’ll try to come back and tell you how great the recipe worked later lol and have a nice day to and thanks for sharing your recipe to <33 !!! 😊😝😆
i love these! wanna make it for my horse, but do you know if donkeys can eat these too? my neighbors have some mini donkeys and i would love to give them some too!
I don't know a ton about donkeys but I would personally say no, just because donkeys have a slightly different diet than horses!
@@slbequine4624 thanks!!!
is that 350° Celsius or Fahrenheit
probably Fahrenheit
Thank you SO MUCH for this! I’ve made these before but for the icing I used water and powdered sugar and they got moldy, so next time I will try this!!
Can you use syrup instead of molasses?
I'm not sure exactly but I probably wouldn't. There are a lot of extra ingredients in syrup depending on the type you use.
@@slbequine4624 Ok, thank you for the answer😊
Hey, would u write a list for the perfect icing technique?
do you have to use a special kind of food coloring? Or can I use normal food coloring?
normal food coloring is fine! I prefer gel personally but either works
Can you do some other kind of design tutorial??
OMG I love it it's so cute and I want to eat it! TYSM I really love this video I think is my favorite video on youtube I really love your vids looking forward to more interesting videos!
how long will these treats last ?x
Roughly 6 months as long as they're kept in an air tight container :)
how hard should the cookies be?
firm but easy to break!
my icing comes off in one big sheet off of my cookies. how do i stop this?
Hmm, I'm sorry I've never experienced that before so I'm not sure how to help!
I love this! My horse Ozzie loved them!
After I bake them they become hard as rocks… what am I doing wrong?? Any advice?
They cookie itself should be hard, but not rock hard. You may be cooking them too long or need more wet ingredients.
if you see this, how long can you store these for?
If they’re in a sealed container somewhere not hot, I keep them about 6 months.
What are some horse safe food dyes I can use??
Food dye from the grocery store is fine
What is a sub that you can do for the molasses?
Are all the ingredients in these cookies safe for horses?
Of course, wouldn't be feeding them if they weren't.
Why bother making the video 🤦🏼♂️. You don't want to give the recipe out maybe cause it's not yours to start with 👎
Even though it’s not exact, but I love the use of “parts” because the batch can be as big or as small as you want
me too!!
I LOVE THIS
Can you do how to make icing in comments and what to set the oven too! My pony would love these treats! We just need to know how to make them though!
check my most recent treat video, it goes through the entire process icing and all
@@slbequine4624 Thank you! I watched it! Can’t wait for my pony to enjoy the cookies!
Are horses allowed any type of food coloring?
Im pretty sure...Just dont give them too much
Hello sir.can you please let me know if we can feed horses biscuits which contains sugar in it coz my horse loves to eat a lot of biscuits.pls reply if it is good or bad to serve lot of biscuits as a treat.pls reply thanks.
Treats here and there should not be a problem unless your horse has dietary restrictions. If you are worried, consult your vet.
Awwww so cute
Thankyou for sharing 😊
Are you using a liquid measuring cup or a dry ingredient measuring cup for the liquid ingredients?
uhhh...I'm not sure. Just some measuring cups I bought at Walmart lol!
ok, they look like dry measuring cups but the amount of ingredients is key for baking so i just wanted to confirm
What do you recommend if it’s very thin and watery when making the icing?
add more powdered sugar, it will make it thicker
What would you say the shelf life for the treats would be?
I would personally toss them after around 6 months. Be sure to keep them in an air tight container
@@slbequine4624 do they need to be refrigerated? How often do you think horses can eat these?
@@Tinysadventures0123 no they should never be refrigerated. It depends on the horse's diet and special needs. I think one a day is plenty but if you have any worries talk to your vet, they know your horse better than me!
Where did you get that rolling pin from?
amazon!
How much did you usually sell your treats/cookies for?
it really varied depending on the complexity of they set. My pony rods were $10 for 6 rods while the sets were usually around $12-$14 for 5-6 cookies
What’s the tool you used to fix any mistakes you said you could use a toothpick or this tool but I couldn’t make out what it was called
it is called a scribe, you can find them on amazon
My cookies didn’t get hard. They’re still somewhat pliable after baking. Any ideas?
you may need to cook them longer, the specific time will depend on the oven
You were right. I made a second batch and they turned out way better with more time in the oven. My dough did get really springy or elastic while I was waiting to see how the first few came out of the oven. Talk about a comedy of errors.
are the egg whites safe for the horses? do you have to back after ?
Yes because they're pasteurized. They need to be baked as said in the video.
