Hi all, I started this channel initially as a way for me to record some of my own DIY/Vehicle work for my own future reference, & have since decided to share for others. I'm still learning how to make videos so please excuse me if the videos can be a bit rough at times....Each video is a learning experience for me & just a bit of fun....some times I will just throw in "special effects", as a trial/test. Helpful comments more than welcome.....All my videos are for entertainment purposes only, Thx Bob

VW T5 cheap fix sliding door handle lock Transporter Van & others

Yeah, I know the video is rough but hay ho, if you want to save lots of money and fix your broken lock with just a hex key, why not watch . My Van is a 2008 Transporter, I'm guessing other years or vehicles (Caddy, Crafter etc) may have the same or similar locking mechanisms. This fix is for when the door can NOT be opened using the exterior handle but CAN be opened from the inside. I recorded ...

Thank you …… I bought a 40 year old caravelle and wanted to find the spare wheel …. Now I know where it is!!!!! Excellent video. Now how to you close the sliding door from the inside?!?!
A 40 yr old Caravelle sounds like quite a project! enjoy & have fun! The sliding door should have a handle on the inside, sometimes the rods/connections can come lose causing malfunctions.
useful video, thanks for posting
Thanks for watching, glad to be of help.
Stupid question but do you leave the toilet in the Hol even when using it?
Yes, left the toilet in the Hol :-) Double hinged so you can lift top "lid" & open front "door", Suggest strengthening the floor part to tale weight of WC + person.
Silly question - but isn't that a slot for a jack handle between the bolts so you can move the retaining bar with some ease?
Maybe, thanks for the comment, will try next time.
I had to change also the 'Rear Bumper Mounting Guides' (large L-shaped parts) to my 2010 T5.1, because I accidentally bought a rear bumper which was for 2013 onwards (I believe it's 7E0807417E9B9). The 2013 onwards mounting guides are 7E0807393C (LH) and 7E0807394C (RH), 29 pounds a piece. The 2010 bumper which is same as in the video is probably 7E0807417A9B9. 2013 bumper has longer (280 mm) reflectors, so I had to buy them too. The newer bumper is vertically ~2 cm shorter than the 2010 bumper, but it's not a big difference. There is also in total 6 small rubber grommets (less than 1 cubic cm size) which are pushed into the mounting guides ('Grommet for Rear Bumper Support Brackets') which can be changed at the same time, but it's not mandatory because the old ones are likely still good (same grommets are used in T4). But if a shop sells the mounting guides, it also likely sells the grommets. I hope this helps someone 😁
Thanks for sharing all that helpful information, part no.s etc, very informative. Thank you.
Hi Bob, at home I used a trolley jack turned sideways so I could move the tyre holder sideways to lock on the captive bolt. On the roadside I used the VW jack with its rocking 'foot' it rocked sideways enough to remove the bar safely & refit it safely. G
Great suggestions, many thanks and thanks for watching.
Great video, but how do I remove the reinforcement beam underneath?
your video and explanations were excellent and I was able to do the full replacement of the unit. Thank you.
Glad you managed to complete the task, certainly need some air blowing for the hot weather :-) Have a nice day. thx for watching.
How do you get the plastic corner pieces off to access the first screws?
Hi, Sorry my van doesn't have any corner piece covers, I'm guessing the female slots are to receive male tabs from the corner pieces? Suggest using a flat plastic trim removal tool or flat headed screwdriver to release tabs.
@@bobsworld1863 Exactly. They are only clipped in. When you start pulling on that cover and look in the crevice you will see. Nothing complicated
This is the most thorough video tutorial for this task on UA-cam and definitely the first one you should watch. The care and time taken to explain the cable positions, attachment of ball ends and rings to control unit are something others don’t explain fully. Horrible job to do, but made possible by this video. Bravo.
Thank you for your comment, hope you have sorted yours, glad to be of help. Happy travelling!
What a poorly engineered 'solution' to house and secure the spare wheel. How do you reposition the spare without giving yourself a hernia? Of course- everyone drives around with a trolley jack so that they can reposition the wheel in the pissing down rain on a dark night. German 'logic' and engineering...........That's piss poor. At least the Ford Transit has a winch mechanism which take the weight of the tyre. I have a T6 in for full rustproofing treatment- so now I have to wrestle with the spare in order to spray the chassis fully.
Totally agree, I think it was the same "engineer" who designed the T5 cup holder! Have fun with the T6.
Helpful. Thanks very much.
Thanks for watching, have a wonderful 2024!
Very helpful, but next time get someone else to hold the camera, and back up a bit for a wider view.
Thanks for the helpful feedback.
Your lack of mechanical sympathy is a bit alarming!! 😲
Haha thanks for the compliment 😛 You should meet the guy with the angle grinder :-)
Remowed spare tire and newer will put it back in its place usless design just trow it in the van and no problems.
🤣 Haha Yes, the design could be better..VW! Thanks.
Undo bloody coolant pipes off header l, simply moves out of way better access🥹
Thanks for the tip, I'll try that one next service 🙂
I would use a jack under the wheel to take the load when unbolting the wheel, and also to uplift the load, when fitting the wheel back up, instead of trying to take the weight of the wheel while trying to tighten the bolts at the same time, doesn't look a good job to do in the rain, or the side of the road, without overalls or any other time for that matter, not a good design
Thanks for watching, the comment & subscribing, much appreciated :-) Yes, a jack sure makes things much easier....Luckily I've never had to change while at the side of the road ...phew
There is no need for kicking banging it. If you look there is a hole beside that nut you use the lug wrench that came with the van to slide into that hole. The handle end and use it as a lever to help pull up the bar and carefully let the wheel down. That's how you would do it on the side of the road.
Aha! Thank you ;-) I learn a new thing every day. I'll have a look and do properly next time. many thanks.
Yes, I spotted the obvious place to pop a bar in to help both lifting down and back up again! My van has a screw in towing eye which fits perfectly into that hole and is around a foot long. Makes it so much easier.
@@andrewhamilton2773 Just to add to Dominick and Andrew's comments the screw-in towing eye does work, but is not made for this purpose, does not fit securely and you risk damaging the threads. The pistol shaped wheel wrench is made to make the operation relatively safe and fast. So use the wheel wrench/lug wrench supplied with the vehicle (Mine is from 2014 - not sure if they are all the same). Remove the screwdriver that is slotted into the wrench. First loosen the left hand (safety) bolt about a cm. +/- 0.5 inch, perhaps a little more. This stops the wheel and folding bracket falling on your hand. You then remove the right hand bolt completely. The assembly now rests on the safety bolt. Note that the wheel wrench has a small 'tongue' at the end. Now insert the wrench into the hole provided and wiggle it around until the tongue slots into a small hole at the bottom of the tube. Lift up the wrench until it fits securely into the channel provided and then pull it firmly across to the right until the larger hole is over the safety bolt. Lower carefully, use both hands if you want. The 'pistol grip' on the wrench should prevent your hand being crushed, but you could put a block of wood under the folding bracket if you are worried. I carry a 77 cm wheel wrench which fits nicely and could make this even safer, but I think it is overkill.
Thanks for the video! My yellow cable clip has snapped! Do I have to replace the whole cable? 😫
Hi Nick, Yes take a deep breath, a chill pill and yes change that cable.....Take your time and enjoy suggest you take photos as you dismantle to help remember how to rebuild ;-)
You have a new subscriber :) love your videos Thank you friend
Thank you for liking & subscribing :-) ... I have some videos (aka jobs to do) coming in the next few months: Repair/replace sliding door lock, changing triple bench seat to double bench seat , remove & replace front bumper & some odds & ends. thx
Amazing! Where did you get the bumper from?
It is the original black bumper, first I sanded the scuffs & deep scratches then sprayed with plastic primer followed by white prime, colour coded white & finally clear coat.
Thanks from Germany 🍀‼️👍
Bitte schön ;-)
My problem is the hot and cold adjustment keeps blowing holes in the nylon kam attached to the control unit I’m on my 3rd control unit at £180 per go the solid core cable (red) is absolutely fine, I believe my problem is season change shrinking of plastic etc. Or spilt cola
Cheers Bob 🍻
So smart!!!
Thank you for watching ;-) have a nice day !
Thanks for posting this, I did my one today and this made the job so much easier.
Glad to have helped. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for this mate, getting me out of a hole!!
Glad it helped. All we need now is to be "allowed" to drive somewhere exotic ;-) !!!
Hells bells.
Great job in:- doing the work; videoing and editing; explaining. Thank you but I dread having to do the same - mine is well dodgy OMG.
Glad it was helpful! Get all your tools & parts ready and go for it ;-) You will have the satisfaction of not paying the dealers ££££
Can someone tell me the partnumber is the black plastic bumper suport where the bumper slides in?
Sorry I don't know that one but it is probably printed on the part somewhere..... maybe try a breakers yard?
Did you find it? I'm looking for the same. I'll check when I open mine up.
Good video, does the air filter have a correct way to put in? I changed my pollen filter earlier and for some reason since replacing it my windscreen is steaming up, Im not sure if it's the pollen filter or the air filter that is causing this. Thanks
Air filter is for the engine, Pollen filter is for the cab, the pollen filter has a one way flow....I would guess it is the pollen filter wrong way round. thx
Your first video? This is an excellent tutorial.I enjoyed all the tips that are sometimes left out by others.Very very good.Thank you so much for sharing.
Hi, yes I think that one was my 1st video....probably took me 10 times longer to make / upload the video than do the actual job! LOL ....Thanks for watching.
Worked a treat, Air direction dial gear had jumped out of position. Prized it back into its track and job done. Now need to find why theres next to no heat getting through despite all cables being connected. Thanks for your effort :-)
If the cable was the original twisted wire cable type note that they can get buckled....so if it jumps out of position again will be better to change for a solid core cable.
@@bobsworld1863 Cheers chap
Absolutely spot on! Had the same fault bought replacement and thanks to you fitted it in an hour! Hardest part was getting stereo out! Lol great job thanks
Thanks for the feedback, good to hear you got it sorted so fast ;-)

Very helpful videos. Been a huge help. Hope you do more of them. 👍 are all 4 videos for a full service or is there more to do?
Hi Tomas, Thx for your feedback. Yes the 4 videos cover the standard servicing & your van will be much happier after!
Thank you, very helpful!
You're welcome, thx
Hello, I've been looking for some reviews of HOL so far and this is the most creative way of using HOL. Especially putting hinges on the edges is great idea! Thank you for sharing.
Thank you, sorry it is not a "How to video", if using for a porta potty sore you will also need to add some strengthening bars or panel to the base. Have a nice day ;-)
Good job bud have to attempt this on the wife's VW Thanks
Good luck! Just take your time, step by step & you'll be fine.....any questions just fire away.
