500 Class Locomotives, Part 3: Riding Behind a 500 Down the South Line (New Release)
This is a new version of a video that was originally published on this channel two years ago. That version came out very dark due to a problem in the way UA-cam deals with certain video formats. As a result, it was of poor quality. This version has improvements that overcome those and other issues.
Some seventy years ago, a group of rail enthusiasts and their families rode a southbound freight, hauled by engine 501, down the south line through the Adelaide Hills. This is some early black and white imagery from that trip.
Since the scenes were recorded with a handheld 8mm movie camera, there is no audio track on this video.

V Class Locomotives
Переглядів 7633 роки тому
The 0-4-4 V class locomotives were originally acquired to work the narrow gauge lines in the south east of South Australia beginning in the late 1870’s. They proved to be inadequate for the task but were found to be more successful in providing shunting operations in various parts of the state. They could be seen performing these duties right up into the 1950’s. This short black and white video...

Why did our governments get rid of theses Magnificent pieces of machinery??Now long gone What a Disgrace South Australia
What great Times And Fantastic Journeys To our countrysides😗
Wow, wonderful content. I was surprised to see the Crocodile sitting in Islington - I don't know much about it but it was at the Mile End Museum in the early days, I don't know why but it has always fascinated me greatly.
went to see 523 last year while my visit to adelaide sadly its been moved to the open shed outside felt bad for the thing considering i went there purely to see it only to be dusty as hell
FJ Holdens from Woodville.
They were such an unusual looking beast, and I'm still trying to work out what that ungainly looking addition is, to the usual locomotive... I would appreciate any input 👍
This is awesome. How times have changed ! Now the old railway line is a bike track, which I have used many times... a lot more trees in the area now
I used to live across from the Ethelton station as a young boy in the 60s and early 70s. I certainly remember a couple of these coming down the track
Vintage narrow gauge steam power in action! In January 1969 I saw an ancient T-class 4-8-0 shunting at Port Pirie while we were waiting at the starting point for the Trans-Australian train.
Vintage power on a scenic route. Passengers help push train uphill on slippery rails!!!
Great to see my old home of Yunta and Paratoo. There used to be a manned signal box at Paratoo in the 60's.
04:39 is that a Silverton A class in the background? (next to the coal stage) It looks too big to be something like a Y, and it doesn't quite look like a T either...
I think this engine looks amazing - floating between the crawling water and oil (?) tenders. But very smoky machines. I also lived in Terowie when I was a kid, but after the line was decommissioned in the early 1970's.
Living at Yunta and Mannahill from 1964 to 1970, I still remember these beaut Garratts and unloading the tucker train for dad's store at Mannahill at 1:30 every Saturday morning, to prepare the town and stations weekly grocery and vegetable orders. Fond memories of great people manning both Yunta and Mannahill Railway services, Sadly, I remember all of the decommissioned steam locos standing forlorn outside of Peterborough for scrap. To me, that remains such a sad site and the significant end to a long era. Gee the small towns along the line also fell victims of the Standardisation and only a couple are clinging to some semblance of life.
Save rx191!
Wow! I was a T A there for ten years (1987-97) It's incredible seeing the vintage footage with the workshops and buildings I knew so well and whats left of it today.
It would have to be late 1951 as the Australian Standard Garratt steam locomotives shown in sections with the streamlined water tanks were purchased second hand by the South Australian Railways in 1951 from the Western Australian Government Railways for use on the Peterborough Division. They have newly arrived from Western Australia as they still have their vacuum brake system pipes on them. Six of these ASG steam locomotives ex WAGR were sent to the Islington workshops from WA where they were overhauled and converted to the standard SAR air brake system and renumbered to the 300 class before sending them to work out of the Peterborough Locomotive Depot between March and November 1952.
I absolutely loved this wonderful collection of locomotives and thank you!
My Dad Use to drive them and they werent very Popular these French Engines. There were Reliability issues and some were Coal Burners and others were Oil Burners. They had a bad Habit of losing or dropping there Fire {Steam} He Drove them out of Peterborough in the Late Fifties and Early Sixties.
Dad use to drive one of these at Peterborough and said they were the only steam engine with a drivers seat that would swivel out and the seat could be out the Cab a little. Also they were pretty quick and could pick up speed and easy to drive and Fire.
What an awesome piece of footage showing what it was like to travel behind a mixed goods.
I love brill railcar S
My Dad started as a cleaner in 1942 then Fireman on Q Class then went on to Drive all the Big Webb Engines. He Loved Tailem Bend and it was so busy.
Thanks for the memories I saw the circus 🎪 train a few times.
My grandfather used to drive the train from Strath to Milang his name was Bill Larkin
Can anyone pinpoint the station at 9:57? Different view of McLaren Vale or a station between there and willunga?
It is Mclaren Vale
Wonder if this is the old Glandore line.
Such a strange engineering decision.... What was the point of making two pairs of cylinders and another set of 4 axles? It seems ovecomplicating the whole machine. While the boiler size seems too small for 4 cylinders. Very unusual machine.
S class were made in 1893 and all of them were scrapped.None were saved.
wow
It's a shame we no longer have any rail destinations further than the metro network so that these types of tours could happen nowadays.
Can somebody tell me why SA governments have just closed and let these lines go? So many lines have been lost. Moonta line should never have been closed, it would have been a great tourist attraction over the summer months for people wanting to visit the Copper coast. Mt Gambier & Whyalla are SA's two biggest regional towns yet no train service. If South Australia is to grow and flourish it needs to have a good regional train network. Buses are uneconomical and contribute to increases in road traffic.
In the late '60s my Mother took me and my mate to the Mile End Railway Museum, my mate and I were about 8 or 9 years old. We lived at Taperoo and we went to Keswick station via Adelaide on the train. When we arrived at Mile End I felt like I was in train Heaven. So from then on, I went to the museum often, it was open every first and third Sunday of each month(with or without my mother).
Thank you for this trip back in time, I've always been curious to know what this line would have looked like when operational, and now I do.
I've always wondered what the junction at Hallett Cove looked like
How did they deal with the break of gauge?
Thanks for preserving SA Rail history!
Excellent video .... the best that I have seen for the Willunga line !
Does anybody know the typical length of these trains and where the interstate platform was? There are occasional calls for interstate trains to return to Adelaide Railway Station but it doesn't look feasible.
I went on a S.A.R.H.S tour in the 1970s behind 520 up to Wallaroo, we had a photo stop(one of many) at the same spot as 627 0:56
G’day SASL! I would like to contact you/copyright holder for permission to use some of your footage for a video I am putting together. If there’s a good way to contact you, that would be greatly appreciated! Many thanks 😁
If you Google my name (see credits, production), you will find links to get in touch with me.
Hi @@andrewthomas9017! Many thanks for that and I will try and seek you out with that suggestion. Expect a forwarded email via your Foundation, thank you for your time!
How come ever any sound ?
Wish more ASG where saved 😢
Excellent 👍👍💯
I’m from Melbourne, over the years I rode the IP from Broken Hill to Port Pirie and noted the triple gauge yard at Peterborough and Gladstone in 1978. In 1079 I rode the old Ghan from Marree to Alice and in the ‘90s I rode the preserved train from Peterborough to Eurelia. I drove around in my car to look at the remains of Carrieton, Bruce (a residence) and the remains of the Wilmington line. Eventually I rode on the restored line from Pt Augusta to Quorn and noted the junction at the end of the yard. At the Port Pirie station I noted the timetables showing the Slow Mixed (tea and sugar train). I regret never travelling on this train but the disincentive was that you were not allowed to travel to Kalgorlie, you had to break your journey somewhere on the Nullarbor. I wondered if the train staff would have enforced this rule. There was also a Fast Mixed.
I regret not riding the Bluebird from Adelaide to Peterborough when it was operating. Likewise the Gladstone line.
Just imagine climbing all over the coal tender these days whilst the loco is moving...
That was interesting, never thought of a train up in the Flinders Ranges. Ever time I watch the steam locomotives I see that black billowing into the sky.
Glad they took the time and effort to put a locomotive in the children’s playground 2023😊
How free we were sticking your head out of the windows . When the train stopped there is restitution from walking around the engine. Life was more relaxing then.
