Old Ships Company

From our love for all things maritime, we produce documentaries about great ships and how they shaped the world. We celebrate our deep connection with the sea and how it shapes us. Our unique cargo of compelling tales, extraordinary characters, and stunning locations is brought to life with award-winning cinematography and story-telling skills.
Tasmania is small island at the edge of the world, closer to Antarctica than northern Australia. Our rich maritime heritage draws from a deep current of Aboriginal coastal life, whalers, convicts, polar explorers, ship building, and global trade. The deepwater harbour of Hobart is a working port where ship's horns echo through the suburbs and seagulls wheel in the city streets,. Our long dark winter nights are lit by the aurora australis, our weather dominated by the Southern Ocean.

Daring - Risen from the Sands
‘DARING - RISEN FROM THE SANDS’
A ship, thought lost to history, appears from the dark sands on the treacherous west coast of New Zealand’s North Island. The beautiful classic wooden schooner, Daring had laid buried and forgotten for 153 years. The huge task of excavating and preserving this vital link to New Zealand’s maritime past is extraordinary and unique. It’s a story of passion and dogged determination, of state-of-the-art preservation science and its battle with time and decay and noble efforts to tell an old story to a new generation.

& the Jubilee Sailing Trust of Britain is unable to keep her ships at sea. Scandalous.
wow and yeah more tasty giant squid meat will be amazing sir
SHIP SHIP, HURRAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
...ALL built with hand tools! Real talent!
Why the awful background music ?????
That was so magnificent to see it emerge from the sand like that! That's happening on the west coast quite a bit!
Cool and fair play to them but a ship built in 1863 isnt old, we have older wooden ship wrecks dotted all over the place here in Devon UK
Great... Love it
Brilliant.
Wow could this be the next Tally-Ho?
⛵️🇳🇿❤
We now know where Leo is moving his workshop. Looking foreward to "two years" of rebuilding this yacht..
Fascinating. However, this style of narration is vomit inducing. The dramatic music, the drama of will it work/ collapse/ be ready on time, blah blah blah. It's a real shame because it makes these documentaries unwatchable.
A good-looking schooner in her day, I'm certain. A fully functional replica would be awesome if someone were to go through the time, labor, and expense of building one
Amazing condition, I've watched iron and steel vessels slowing collapse in my time, but wood is definitely on a different level.
Built yesterday? Seriously.
Wood is good
'grit' is the operative word! Tons & tons of grit!
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
A ship lost to the ages and resurrected to share the past.. awesome
Well done to the rescue team
New Subscrib❤
Quite a daring recovery. 😏
I visited the Ship a couple of months ago, it’s magical to stand next to her , you can almost hear the ghosts of the builders talking
Few boats give me goose bumps. This one did for sure. She’s alive, don’t doubt it. The crew must have been sweating bullets on the dig. What a relief to see her on that truck! 🫡🇨🇦 from a life long wooden boat lover.
Des is fantastisch!!!!❤❤❤
I think it was a ship whose name cast a spell on on the sailor / builder. As for its beautiful FORM , so fit for,its purpose.
👍👌👏 Oh WOW, simply fantastic! 2) This ship looks just like the next project for Leo Sampson Goolden (the famous Tally Ho rescuer)!!! 😁 ;-)
Fans of Tally Ho will love this story.
As an amateur Underwater Archeologist, the idea of being able to bring the ship back to full order would be absolutely amazing to be apart of... Super jealous.. Will be watching with anticipation... From Lansing, Michigan, (United States of America) wishing everyone a great week
Hi, the plan is to preserve Daring not restore. The Daring Trust are in the process of securing funding to build a purpose built home for her so that the ship can be on display to the public. 💪🏻😀. Our film follows the journey of removing her from the beach and returning the ship to where she was build 150 years ago.
@@oldshipscompany709 Looks to me like there is enough left to build a very accurate and detailed fully functional copy. 👍👍
Save it mate !!
03:51 Copper sheathed! A proper well built old girl.
Amazing ! Looking forward to seeing more.
Wow.. preserved by the mud and salt...I have never felt emotional before watching one of these save vids....You guys are amazing.
Wow. This is going to be a great show! 🔥🔥🔥
Where can I see the full series? :)
Hi, we are still making the series. Keep an eye on our web page for broadcast details. Regards, OSC Crew
Very much looking forward to this series 🙏
What a stunning and beautiful story, not to mention she survived, thankfully to the shifting sands that buried her and ultimately released her - for her to live again. Oh just a very minor point - I heard her called a 'boat' on many occasions, she is in fact a 'Ship'. Thanks for posting this epic piece of maritime history. She certainly looks to be a very pretty ship, I bet she sailed really well and had a nice turn of speed to her with the right wind.
Actually she’s a schooner. A ship is a fully square rigged vessel.
'Splitting hairs'
I think these old guys were using the word "boat" loosely and meaning it as a term of endearment. I've used the words when seeing an old sailing ship, "She's a big old boat"..
@@robertbishop2732 The rig configuration has nothing to do with if it is a ship or not. The only thing that denotes if it is a ship or not is size.
Fair enough, completely understand your point. Best regards
my my ancestor fought james h craig in the revolutionary battle of rockfish in north carolina god damn him and curse his name he was not a honorable man
Why the heck do you people put background music over speech? All you're saying is that the dialog isn't worth hearing. Thankfully, the closed captions work fairly well on this video.
Helped in restoration years ago… been out to on her a couple of times…
Sailed on James Craig from Sydney to Newcastle . it was Great !
Thank you, great to see, cargo under sail.
I recall in the late 80s early 90s when I was carting timber by truck out of white bay and the James Craig was there in a dilapidated state but looking at her she was still a beautiful ship
Hmm this randomly showed up on my feed. Pretty interesting, is this ship actually running now (could it even be made to run if not)? Or is it a static vessel? Either way, nifty!
Hi, I’m not sure why this randomly popped into your feed. Our TV Production company …. The Old Ships Company produced a TV Docco about this ship and the clip you saw was a promo we produced for the owners of the ship - The Medway Queen Trust. They are a group of volunteers who are restoring The Medway Queen and they hope to raise enough funds to one day have her sailing again. Warmest regards, The Old Ships Company Crew ⚓️
The current Medway Queen is a replica. The only original parts that were saved when the vessel was scrapped at Damhead Creek by GPS were 8 bollards some dereks and the main block of the engine, conrods and shafts. The new hull and decks were built at the Albion Dock, Bristol by Ables Shipyard. The funnel was built by the Boiler Makers Union Apprentices.
Hi Mark, I’m not sure what you are talking about? We are a film company base in Australia. Warmest, Old Ships Company
No
It's a copy
You sank Kevin Kelly's boat thar tried to save you please pay him the money
Many thanks to ship savers.
