    Still holds up. The jazzy noir feel in the first half switching to the mind melting existential dread of the 2nd half is one of my favorite dynamics in any media ever. Deserves just as much as the original

    4:02 Oh my god I'm so glad you brought this up. The charscters jsing these quotes to try to rationalize the world around them and root themselves in a physical and spiritual reality whose existence is continually and increasingly questionable is one of the most fascinating parts of the movie to me Its doubly interesting when you compare it to the Major, who has seemed to wholly accept the jew reality that exists within the Net. If you wanna get deeper into it, theres also themes of the characters being stuck in Samsara, with the Major seemingly having escaped

    Rewatching this in theaters ive come to appreciate it on another level. Besides the incredible, dense, and profound writing, the cinematography is incredible,theres a whole story in those "camera" angles. Specifically those uncomfortable, unflattering, slightly off center shots with the characters looking right at the "camera".

    Hey, Harrison! I've not watched any of the Alien franchise except Prometheus, which... honestly I didn't enjoy. I laughed a little because they played into the sci-fi trope of "barren women are capable of birthing alien creatures" and I totally predicted it. But. . . that movie screamed "sequel" in a way that I didn't think "Aliens" was an answer to. And then her unceremonious offscreen death in said sequel just felt insulting. That said, I enjoyed your commentary. I also noticed you're doing talking to camera mixed in with your film footage! Is that working better for you?

    • @harrisonchute1458
      @harrisonchute1458 2 роки тому

      Prometheus is one of those movies I consider a long-standing nemesis, for countless reasons. As far as the camera setup goes, it's never a preference for me. On another channel, I was doing videos with all movie clips until a video about The Departed, which got clocked for copyright -- maybe three or four times -- so I had to break up future videos with my mug and eventually lost interest. This was gonna be a podcast episode until I wanted to point out that scene in AVP where the two scientists look at each other. If I do this again, I'll have to work on the teleprompter aspect (as you can see, my eyes rarely meet the camera)

    • @LetterheadStudios
      @LetterheadStudios 2 роки тому

      @@harrisonchute1458 placement and practice I'd say. You're gonna do it badly a couple of times before you get it good. But Id say placing the camera just right helps. If it means anything, I barely noticed. In fact, it felt more or less natural to me. So perhaps you can improve, but you may just be your own worst critic right now.

    Ghost in the Shell 2 was an absolutely horrific abomination. I had seen the first movie and absolutely loved it and I had watched most of the actual ghost in the Shell series, I had never seen the second movie and my boyfriend asked me about what happened to the major after the first movie because he watched the first one with me one night. I was like "Oh there's a second movie that I've never seen let's watch it" and it was the worst abomination I've ever seen and the only reason we stuck it out was for the fact that I wanted to know how it ended...

    So I learned about that Studio ADI clip ("I'm getting dark pictures here, Tom." "Shut up, Dave.") through forums, where it's sometimes used as a smoking gun that the production was sabotaged from the inside. I can guarantee that nearly that exact exchange happened somewhere along in the production among producers, but ADI had nothing to do with the lighting. They might have even been poking fun at the set policy in that moment. Tom Woodruff and Alec Gillis did a commentary for AVPR where they mostly promoted their book, but that might be worth looking at again for any possible references to the eternal question of Why is AVPR so DARK?

    This movie is one of my favorites. I've seen it multiple times and each time I discover something new about it. Your analysis of the films structure helps make it make more sense than before. I never picked up on the grief angle, but I did get the "lonely" bit. It makes much more sense that he's grieving the loss of the Major. I always felt is was something more complex but it was pretty basic. Can't believe I missed that.

    If you think about it, what are Gynoids, other than glorified fleshlights? They’re a recreation of the opposite sex, without autonomy - a slave. As with slavery, it’s another form of *dehumanization.* Until mankind can recognize and overcome its nature to otherize, dehumanize and dominate; it will never evolve beyond a species capable of universal empathy or understanding.

I thought to myself "wow i must've hit another big movie channel" until i realized this is a video from 7 years ago with only 28k views from a channel of only several hundreds subscribers. This is way too high quality for the little amount of exposure it gets, should've atleast hit a million in few months with this effort Also i found this vid from the cross-border spitting contest scene video

    After rewatching both the 1995 and Innocense back to back after recently finishing the Arise series, you come to appreciate the relationships between the characters more and the emotional impacts of it. For Batou, Motoko isn't just a friend, she was more akin to his significant other and you understand his grief even more in Innocense. I've seen it in real life, a man loses his wife, shuns out the world, stoicism/nihilism, and lives for nothing other than his work and dog. And him questioning the meaning of life and existentialism, like how Motoko did. Batou is looking for answers to why Motoko left him, where she had gone and is she happy. And at the end when she says that she will forever be by his side gives him some closure and acceptance. In his own way, he had found some solace in continuing to live on. In some ways, I envy Batou because unlike in the real world you don't get closure directly from the dearly departed.
