The RG Haley cleanup site on Bellingham Bay is the bottom of a large bluff that originates up at Sehome Hill. This site was where trees were milled, stored and (most significantly) treated. The chemicals that were used to treat wood such as pentachlorophenol and petroleum hydrocarbons are present in soil, groundwater and marine sediments at potentially harmful levels. Local agencies are cleanin...

i am able feel this - a plantation can never evoke such emotions like a real forest - people made jokes about me - but i have this deep experience - landscape is alive - an entity - because it is not possible to express such happenings to ordinary citysens - they think this would be only a belive - there is no fact to this assumption
The government should sponsors professional miyawaki gardeners to fix up forests….24/7 365 days a year or at least from spring to fall
great video, really appreciate the work that went into this.
Oh man. My only complaint is that it's not 3 hours long
It's important what he said about water yield...how plantations use more water, and how longer rotations can lead to higher quality water.
So cool! What an amazing individual. Thanks for a great video.
Thank you for this video! I have been a PNWer all my life (I now reside on southern Vancouver Island) and our waterways are such a key part of what makes me happy to live here.
thanks for this
A true jedi
😂 thank you for the video
I have 40 ac of forest, development of other agricultural products a methods are needed to allow for an 80-100 year rotation. Small forest holders do not have enough trees to function as an industrial forest.

THE LORAX
Yes,of course. Cut 1/3 the volume every 25 years. Manage density so the birds can fly through (and eat the bugs) let the berries grow. Don’t slash all the alder maple willow, leave enough stems that it won’t reroot but those remaining remaining stems become trees to fix nitrogen and shade the floor. If you cut all the trees water will only complete half the water cycle. (Victor Schauberger) It will runoff and the soil and all plants dry out. Our forest policy is set by accountants. (Greed) Fungus is the digestive agent of your soils. Soil is the true source of wealth. Thank you for saying it so well.
right on! no more cutting of old growth! and we don't need to build houses out of wood. i live in Bend, Oregon and the forest service is now clearcuting a lot do to their fear of wild fire!
I really like Dr. Jerry Franklin, we need more wise old men with intelligence, humility, humor, and above all wisdom. " If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him." James 1:5
he inspires me

Thank you, a very nice and meaningful video. Now I am living in the Pacific Northwest and I was born in the English Northwest; both very meaningful in my life.
Thank you so much for the kind words!

Amazing video! Conveys the genius and complexity of forest ecosystems in a deceptively simple way. This needs to be shared much more widely!!
We need more foresters like this man here.
thank you so much- its so good to see Jerry and like Old Growth he hasn't changed a bit in the 30 years--- For folks who are new to Jerry let me share a little story- in the mid 1980s when we were doing as Jerry describes "changing forest management". .there were "wars in the woods" many people were afraid for the changes, changes in ownership, employment, management. . Bill Clinton called a Forest Summit in Portland to talk the issue- it was televised and I remember seeing Jerry Sitting At the Right Hand of the President of the United States- he was speaking the truth of science and what we were already learning about ecosystems, resilience, mychoryzal fungi, water, wildlife- I was in awe- here we were seeing the powerful presidential decision maker getting a briefing from the most powerful forest professor in the West- a tenured forestry faculty at hte UW School of Forestry, interns, grants, a proposed Forest Science Center getting funding in Forks- I was elated-- Monday morning I woke up to a barage of phone calls- over the weekend this mny who had sat with the President-- had the UW clean out his office, ,let his interns to and reassign Franklin to a sort of infamy--- Jerry left and worked in Chile for a few years- but seeing this video reminds me of his passion, authenticity, and willingness to speak truth to power- thanks to the new generation of forest ecologists, landowners, Tribal leaders and people who can see the forest for the trees- its still awe inspiring. thanks!
A legend!
Beautiful film
protect this man at all costs
❤️❤️❤️❤️
I thought only city workers do that?

Great job Nate! I think you are right - he wouldn't have accepted it. I'm so happy that not only Jeremy but the Natural Resources Department team was recognized for all the amazing work that they have done over the decades.
The Center for Biological Diversity (CBD) is a wealthy and radical anti-development activist and litigation organization that specializes in manipulating the Endangered Species Act to prevent resource production and human activity. Its activities have involved breaking the law - including a shoplifting conviction for its founder - and framing innocent people to ruin their lives and livelihoods.Despite its hard-left anti-corporate stance, it has collected large donations from Goldman Sachs, Bank of America, Microsoft and the ExxonMobil Foundation. It also enjoys support from some of the largest left-wing foundations in America, including the Tides Foundation, The New York Times Company Foundation, Rockefeller Family Fund, and Pew Charitable Trusts. The Center for Biological Diversity has incorporated several times in three different states, has changed its name and address and merged into a holding company, which is not only puzzling, but also makes tracking its activities, officers, and funding difficult. In 2002, CBD was caught inserting falsified evidence of range damage into the federal grazing permit file of an Arizona ranching company the group had targeted for destruction. The wronged rancher took CBD to court in 2005, and a guilty verdict at trial required CBD to pay $600,000 in damages.
The following is from a PBS.org article concerning the comeback of sea-stars in the Puget Sound area: "They’re mounting an epic comeback, after a sea-star wasting disease decimated the marine animals in 2014. It’s no secret that the condition triggered the biggest sea star die-off along the West Coast in recorded history. What’s less known is that this steep decline in purple sea stars has been followed by an unprecedented flourish of younglings, according to new research from Oregon State University. “It is remarkable,” said ecologist and evolutionary biologist Pete Raimondi of the University of California Santa Cruz, who wasn’t involved with the new study. “It’s hard to even appreciate that this massive replenishment event is happening so quickly after the loss of the adults.”So the ridiculously wayyyy over done fake/staged drama with the tissue box prop to wipe the fake tears can stop now. They are seeing more young sea stars than ever before on the beaches, so perhaps Ms. fossil fuel hater should have spent a few more minutes on the beach with her eyes open. I wonder how she earns a paycheck spreading fear to the uninformed; who is paying her for this nonsense? The next time her family goes on vacation, she should ditch the airline tickets or trip in the family car, and hop in the horse and buggy and live it up. Without fossil fuels life as we know it on this earth is over, no cars, no planes, no trains, and no trucks. Back to the farm with a horse and plow, the anti fossil fuel gang lives in absolute fantasy, but it is a way to make a buck off of snake oil rhetoric!
