We teach tequila. Online tequila courses for all levels.
Why does Don Julio charge 2x for 1 year of aging?
In this video we discuss some of the methods brands use to price their product. Is it based on fair cost or more about consumer segmentation?!

So in 2021-2023 some Tequila brands prices jumped significantly compared to 2019....1942 was retailing between $85-$110....but suddenly jumped to $145-$160 in 2021-2022....Olmeca Altos jumped from $20 to $30...the Big 4 Cognac brands XO jumped from $150-$175 to $225-$250....PRICE GOUGING IS WHAT HAPPENED
@da900smoove1 hmm.. hard to imagine tequila being a "basic necessity", especially since there are cheaper "alcohol" alternatives like rum or vodka for those who are price sensitive. Also, there was a huge price increase of the base ingredient the agave for the period you mentioned, so it may be more reasonable to contribute the price increase you mentioned to that.
Why does he use rain water? “Because it’s free”, I love that. I’ll be honest G4 is my favorite brand of tequila, not only because it’s additive-free and because it’s made the traditional way, and because it tastes very good. I went to a tequila tasting event recently and they were giving out free samples of several different brands, including G4. I was telling the promoters that one thing I like about that brand is that it has a very nice creamy mouthfeel. They told me that comes, mostly, from the 50/50 blend of rain water and spring water, which makes total sense. I haven’t tried Terralta yet, but I have heard a lot of good things. I love Filipe’s strategy of rebranding his tequila because of the availability of the rain water as the seasons change. Since he knew the tequila wouldn’t have the same flavor profile with the deep well water, it makes honest sense to just rebrand the tequila so they can keep selling it.
Cheap tequila tastes horribly... Too strong, like drinking pure alcohol... If You put a few more pesos into it, You get a better product... My favorite is Herradura, not too expensive and delicious 😍
Why categorize aging if it can always be classified as a reposado?
@@robertmyers5763 probably for distinguishment as if a tequila is classified as añejo or extra añejo it had to have met extra criterias vs reposado which is extra value to certain consumers looking for tequilas aged for longer time periods in barrels.
I disagree as your comments pertain to myself. I am a recent tequila convert from bourbon. Since I like barrel influence, I like XA’s the most, then Anejo’s and Repo’s. Just so happens that what I like the most, XA’s, cost the most. Has nothing to do with level of my income.
@sevezane Thanks for your comment! I appreciate your point as price is subjective: you can buy an extra añejo for 100-200 dollars or you can pay in the range of 500-1500 dollars. Which one do you belong to?
Doesn't matter when they use additives in both. Might as well have been a repo would still have the same syrupy taste. Not sure if I would completely judge a different anejo based on aging alone. Some go for a lot of barrel influence, some don't. Though good for highlighting how out of whack the tequila market it. Traditionalists are not the same as the premium fancy bottle market.
Aging does change the characteristics of every tequila not just fully authentic ones. One of the big distilleries has an open barrel in their cellar and someone with experience can easily tell it is reposado at best, yet they claim it is extra añejo which is not true. We have to appreciate not everyone is in for the "authentic" experience and these commercially oriented tequilas are great "hook" for new people to enter the tequila world where some of them may become "traditionalists" over time. Unless someone is born in Los Altos or another region with strong culture, chances are they don't start with traditional tequilas. Thanks for the comment, much appreciated!
I love it straight from the bottle
Hello! Your Atanasio Orígenes Espíritu fuerte is amazing . I’m a huge fan of all your spirits !
So what is your go to? I don't mind paying a bit more, but the higher ranges hardly seem worth it. Also perhaps a very stupid question, does the aging process continue after the tequila has been bottled but alas at a slower rate?
We have several favorites! For the ones we actively support, we even have free brand courses for on our website. Not a stupid question at all! There are several producers that evolve tequila in glass or even stainless steel before bottling. The key is to control the oxygenation to be very slow and it allows development of character over long time. However after spirits are bottled, they are sealed tight that doesn't allow any oxygenation.
Because storing things is expensive
Yes it is! We decided to cover the "why" part as in one case the "storage" costs 13 dollars, in the other case a 100 dollars. As far as we can tell it is for the same or similar "storage". Just the storage costs alone doesn't seem to be responsible for the difference.
also great video from such a small channel!
Thanks so much!!
I think placebo also plays a roll, if you think it is supposed to taste better bc it cost more then it will.
Yes, you are right! Charging more probably creates a placebo effect as well - if it is more expensive it must be better and so our brains can help us feeling the "extra joy" through the taste as well.
Well yes anyone stupid enough to overspend on alcohol already knows that it has nothing to do with the quality of a product and everything to do with the *perceived* quality. There was an Aldi wine which won awards and yet was so cheap that most people would think that it tastes ‘cheap’. A good drink is a good drink and reason longer aged leads to a higher price is almost definitely just because storing things is expensive
@@Alphoric If you watch the full video, you will see that even "unaged" tequilas of the same/similar production method have heavy retail price variations. It is true for wines as well, though in wine world, the actual "terroir" can add to the cost as well. For example, wines from the Champagne or Chateauneuf du Pape regions are simply more expensive due to the land being expensive and so the price of the grape becomes more expensive there. Also, wines can even "over-age", and lose their body and complexity, and if so, they start to lose value and the producer may only sell them at a discount. Overall Aldi wines can have a similar quality but be cheaper simply because they don't come from an expensive denomination or appellation, not necessarily because they are aged less. (there are other factors to consider like offering a smaller selection of wines and buying them in larger quantities at a discount)
All new meaning to "hai vas a tragar mierda otraves" 😂
Sadly it is hard to find these two brands.
Yes, very sad indeed.
Not necessarily true
Yes we agree that there are exceptions. Do you believe this to be fundamentally untrue?
Filipe is an amazing guy! He is always willing to make time to talk to people who come to visit. i was fortunate to have him stop to visit while I was at my uncle's rancho next door to El Pandillo.
Why do you say El Pandillo is next door to La Altena? Its at least a 10 min drive from one to the other. El Pandillo is in the middle of nowhere, next door is my uncles rancho
El Pandillo is my favorite place in the world
Holla Chaves, Massachusetts U.S.A. loves Cascahuin !!!! 🇺🇲✌️😉✌️🇲🇽
