Love from pakistan...
Thank you! Great!!
Very Helpful . Thanks
Thank you!
Do you know why the stroke on the object disappears when trying to draw inside an object that has a stroke?
Thank you so much! i was always afraid of the perspective grid now i love it! you made it so easy to follow - i can't wait to use it. thank you
👍👍🙏🙏
Very good
Thank you!
I have been working with Ai professionally since the Macromedia days - more than 25 years now and am a senior designer working with established mega brands but to this day I have never mastered the mesh tool (I know it's relatively new but still) even with great tutorials like this I find it incredibly frustrating to get accurate results when working on complex shapes - its so much easier for me to just manually draw in the shadows and highlights to give things texture and shape, sometimes I even draw a linework mesh on a layer I can hide or lock to define the shape for me over the object then manually draw in the fills and highlights and gradients using the heck out of blur and feather then delete the mesh - I haven't given up though so here I am lets try again
Yes, even though you can figure out how to get shading to generally go where you want it, it's often trial and error, and you may never be able to replicate the results exactly a second time. But it's still a cool way to add some highlights. It sounds like your artwork is very detailed. I imagine it's wonderful!
Hi Susan. I have a question for you. Can I do the following? Draw a line, set the angle of the line, set the X and Y coordinates of the start of the line, and then manually (using the mouse/trackpad) extend the line along the angle that I previously set until it intersects with another line.
Good question. It's not quite that simple. Draw your line. Direct select the starting anchor and make a note of the X and Y coordinates. Then, select the line, go to the Transform area of the Properties Panel and click on the elipsis. In the panel that pops up, make sure "Scale Corners" and "Scale Strokes and Effects" are checked, then type in the NEW length of the line. THEN, direct select the starting anchor and type in the original X and Y coordinates. Your line should be where it was when it started, including the same angle, but the length will have changed. Hope this helps. Too bad there isn't an easier way. Let me know if you find one.

Hi! Great explanation...I followed your instructions, but my align stroke to outside option is greyed out. Any idea why?
In order to use the align stroke to inside or align to outside options, you must first covert your text to outlines (see 1:21). It sounds to me like you might have missed this step. Let me know if this helps.
@@SusanRutledge I did check to make sure I had outlined the text. Any other thoughts? Thanks for responding! :)
I dont exactly know why but every time i use Repeat > Radial The outside square that has the slider to change the amount of objects doesnt show up for me, and i dont know how to fix it, is there a key combination for moving it up and down or any other recommendations?
It sounds like you don't have the Bounding Box option turned on. Go to View>Show Bounding Box. On a MAC, the keyboard shortcut is Shift+Command+B. I think this will solve your problem. Please let me know! FYI, the Bounding Box can be a very useful tool for resizing and other actions. I usually leave it turned on.
Thank you! This is the first video that actually makes sense and easy to follow.
You're welcome. I'm glad you found it easy to follow. Thanks for leaving a comment!
But what if I don't want two separate layers left and right? But I want to have one whole object after Expand? how
Unfortunately, I don't think you can join the layers, even after expanding them. At least, I couldn't find a way. But if you can figure one out, please let me know!
Wow, This is amazing. Love it a lot.
Hi Susan! I am a student studying graphic design at art school in Glasgow, Scotland. I always find your videos very helpful and informative! Thank you for providing such useful information, keep up the good work!
Thank you for the encouraging comment. I'm glad you find my tutorials helpful. Best wishes on your studies!
Can a Gradient Mesh exist without a color fill,I prefer having empty paths accent with highlight,mid-tone and shadow
No, the gradient mesh always has to be applied to a fill color. However, you could use a VERY light white as a fill. Try RCB 255, 255, 254. It won't be a transparent fill, but it will at least allow you to create your accents without a visible background. Hope this helps.
You teach with detail and clarity - I shared this with my design students - thank you!

When I place objects on a perspective grid, I sometimes want to change the angle of the perspective... However, when I modify the grid, the objects don't follow the grid modification! Is it possible to modify the perspective grid at the same time as the objects placed on it? Thanks.
I wish I could say yes, but I'm not aware of a way to do this. Sorry.
@SusanRutledge I looked everywhere... And this feature doesn't exist! It's incredible that Adobe never thought of implementing it, as it would be very useful for fine-tuning a project... And technically, there would be no difficulty in magnetizing objects on the grid! I find that this company sells its software at a very high price, but that the development is not up to the price paid... Thanks anyway for your help 🙏
Merci Beaucoup

How do you create a brush that you can adjust the fill? (Keeping the stroke black but changing the negative space to be a color)
Unfortunately, I don't believe you can. You will have to create each brush with the fill color you want to use. It shouldn't take much extra time. You can even duplicate the original brush to save time, then bring in the new pattern tile (hold down the OPT key on a MAC, ALT key on a PC) and drag it right in on top of the first pattern tile (it will be the second slot from the left). Hopefully you can make sense of my response. Best wishes.
very tricky but explain best way to guide.
I couldn't tell if you were asking a question here.
You are a great teacher I have been using the pen tool randomly for a very long time I saw a lot of tutorials to understand this tool, but not like your clear explanation Thank you very much from Egypt
Thank you for your comments. I'm so glad you found my tutorial helpful. Isn't technology wonderful where I can create a video in Texas, USA and you can learn from it on the other side of the planet. I love it!
Whats the license use on the generated patterns?
I wouldn't want to steer you wrong, so please consult the Adobe website for answers. I BELIEVE most of your generated patterns can be used commercially (without images of people in them) unless specifically designated otherwise by the product. But I don't think you can copyright them. Please consult Adobe for their official answer.
Hello, Mrs Susan . Thank you for your information. May I suggest another way to straighten paths? If we move the centre of the rotate tool to the left point of the line, then click a little to the right of the line and drag it to the left point, it straightens the line. This works for complex shapes.
Thanks for the suggestion. I'll try it!
Thank you, detailed and very pleasant! It helped me out a lot for my college assignments!

How can I remove individual pedals from the design?
You'll have to expand your design, and then ungroup. You should be able to select individual pieces after that.
Love this a lot. It is so helpful for me the create the shadow for the book 👍🥰. I would be nice if in the future you can create a tutorial of a book mockup in Adobe Illustrator.
