John Peel plays Billy Bragg for the first time 29th June 1983
Переглядів 10 тис.Рік тому
Finally, Tim from the Peel Tapes group has located and digitised the legendary first play of Billy Bragg by John Peel in June 1983. The tape starts just after Peel has messed up by playing the track at 33rpm. He then struggles to re-cue the needle in classic style. After the track finishes he admits "it was Billy Bragg that bought me a mushroom biryani earlier on this evening, this is corruptio...

Billy Bragg Argument - Derby Assembly Rooms 17-Nov-1988
Переглядів 585 років тому
A group of blokes hung around after the gig, specifically to argue with Billy Bragg. One guy seemed to view it as a political failure that Billy hadn't used his platform to instigate immediate revolution on the streets of Derby, and another seemed to be criticising him for the consumerist elements of doing paid gigs. Still don't know to this day how he had the patience to bother with them. The ...

I love you, I am the milkman...
Absolutely love this!!
Excellent, the edit is spot-on, thanks for taking the time to do this! Also nice to hear the songs uninterruped without applause and commentary etc :)
Wow thank you. I got very emotional listening to this.
Terrific. A very tasteful edit.
hi, can you upload the blancmange gig from this same episode? thank you

Just how I remember it before the railings on brook walk got washed away.
Only on Peel's show right? Billy had the career Lennon probably would've have wanted if he wasn't tied in to that big band! Bragg walks it like he talks it.
Just saw him last night at The Roundhouse… as relevant as ever. And what a show!!
just as strange if you play it at half speed.......
And yet another recorded version of Ride into the sun?
I had that tape recorder
I wasn't listening to the show that night, but some months later Peel played this again (or it might have been another song from "Life's A Riot..." ) and afterwards said "all for the price of a mushroom biryani, quite extraordinary". I thought this was just a comment on the cheap price of the mini-LP (£2.99 from memory) but now, 40 years later, it all makes sense!
scripted AF but I can understand
pete was so punk/new wave ❤❤❤
Phill Jupitus and me, stole Billy Bragg's cooker when he was away touring around 1988/1989.......Guilty.......as charged.
I was there. Well, i mean I was tuned in when this happened. Heard the call for a curry earlier and then this later.
That warm analogue sound
I got shivers down my spine listening to this.
Beautiful
I loved to listen to John and even spoke to him a couple of times when he was on air.
Almost 40 years !
oh this is amazing
A review in the NME. I think CharleSharr Murray. Rumours that Billy Bragg had mellowed were put to rest at the hope and anchor last night. His rendition of The milkman of human kindness was to guitar's what joy rider's are to gearboxes. Brilliant
Legend + Legend = Legendary.
Milkman of Human Kindness, somehow seems odd for a first play from John Peel, but not a bad choice at all.
Very cutting, raw as it is, I suppose.
Thank heavens for that mushroom biriani.
Then Bill did ‘The Tube’ and ‘Top of the Pops’! The rest is history… all thanks to a veggie curry & the magic ear of the sainted John Peel.
The voice of John Peel as warm and welcoming as the Shipping Forecast under the covers on a stormy night
I knew the story of the curry, but it sure is fun to hear Uncle John's comments. I remember seeing a Xeroxed handbill on a telephone pole for an early show. For some reason I went to the record shop and bought the record unheard. It must have been fate. :o)
Love it!54yo german here!Grew up with the wednesday night PEEL-SESSIONS!Plus thats my alltime favorite of Billy!🍀Thanx for posting!

john peel, god among men
Never heard this, thanks!
That’s great craic. Thank you.
At a BB concert last week in Wellington, New Zealand and Billy told the same story Great night.
What I'd like to know is . . . where in God's name have the last 40 years gone?
@@bennyhillschineseblokechar3689 55 now. And...how did that happen? (I'm still 18 in here. Honestly.)
@@bennyhillschineseblokechar3689 Dunno. I went out for a laugh with my mates in 1979, I just haven't gone home yet.
I'd never heard of Billy, until I heard A New England by Kirsty McColl, and happened to mention to a friend that it would sound better if it was sung with a Male voice. He soon put me straight. Thank You Zoltan Kasa.
Great to hear this as a BB fan.
This is so fascinating thank you for uploading it!
Peel at his (wonderfully) amateurish best.
Its such a lovely song I can understand why you would attempt this. I just don’t think it works. I remember being so excited when I heard about the vocal version 30 years ago, and being underwhelmed listening to it. It’s definitely not from the same session. My conclusion is that the late September ‘69 recording released on Another View was actually intended to be an instrumental piece, as each new chorus brings an additional overdubbed part that functions as a new “solo.” Maybe it was intended for an imaginary movie score. I can’t prove this of course. I just think the track would have fewer overdubs if it was intended to back a vocal. ❤
real cool time
Great work - I love this! Thank you very much.

@@robf1970 Any chance you could reupload the flac link? I love this so much!
Interesting.
What "acetate" vocal version did you use? Is it from an official release?
I can't actually remember, but it was probably from the 7" that came with the italian lyric book bootleg (the one pictured in the video here)
It was officially released in 1991 on the 3 CD Australian box set "What Goes On" (Raven Records).
Exactly what the fans have Ben waiting for.
That’s five minutes of my life I won’t get Ben.
