Olean Center Mall: A Beautiful Critically Endangered Dead Mall In Western New York
#deadmall #deadmalls
Today's visit is to the Olean Center Mall in Olean, NY. This mall opened in 1977 and was a joint development venture between Zamias Construction Company of Johnstown, PA and L' Alcove Castle Inc of Olean. L' Alcove Castle Inc was formerly headed by Guerino "Butch" Butchello who had developed numerous hospitality ventures in the region prior to the 1970s. Butch died in 1976 and wasn't able to see the grand opening of his downtown mall. As with a lot of these smaller town malls it did very well in the 1970s and 80s but when newer shopping developments came to life in the late 1990s the mall began to suffer. The last few years have unfortunately not been kind and the mall is down to three remaining active tenants inside.
Enjoy the tour.

The Point at Carlisle Plaza: A Small Dead Mall Treasure

#deadmall #deadmalls This is a visit to the Point at Carlisle Plaza, a little dead mall in Carlisle, PA. This mall started life out as an open air shopping center, and was enclosed in 1976 as the Carlisle Plaza Mall. In the early 2000s the mall was renamed the Point at Carlisle Plaza, and was reconfigured to accept a Lowe's in the eastern end but the remaining interior portion was mostly untouc...

The Warner Center: A Downtown Mall Where the 1980s Meets the 1930s

#deadmall #deadmalls This is a visit to the Warner Centre (sometimes known as the Warner Center) in Pittsburgh, PA. This was one of the attempted "downtown revival" malls that were popping up everywhere in the early to mid 80s. This one is still standing, with two retail stores inside and operating offices in the upper levels. This $25 million endeavor opened in 1985 and had a rollercoaster rid...

#deadmall #deadmalls The original Sunrise Mall! Today we take a tour through Sunrise Mall in Citrus Heights, California; a suburb of Sacramento. Although there are a lot of vacancies, the mall is well maintained, has three of four anchors ...

This is always sad for my wife and me to see. When our kids were young, we spent many winter Friday nights at the Mall, eating at the Ponderosa or at McDonalds, waiting for the movie to start. My wife and I watched other families shop while the kids played at the arcade. The whole place went from "busting at the seams" to simply busted, like so many other malls across America.

Before the mall went up, my mother used to take me shopping up and down State street. It was glorious. I'll never forget the floor in Bradners and how sparkly it was and all the sales girls behind the counters and the chandeliers and the stair case. We always had to go ride the elevator too. My mother knew all the shop keepers and since we lived in PA she would buy clothes and have them shipped to PA to avoid the sales tax. I remember everyone getting ready for the mall to open, it was big news. It also put downtown Olean out of business eventually. I remember seeing Star Wars at the theater on State street where the Bluebird center is now.

Sunrise Mall should’ve been long gone at the same time Florin Mall went down. I also see Arden Mall being next on the list to go. Malls used to be a great hangout for teenagers, but now a dying waste of space. Sad as great memories are formed during its peak, but failing due to keeping up with the trend (online shopping).

I moved to Citrus Heights as a teen in 1990. Walden Books, Kay Bee toys and the OG food court were great . In 1992 when Suncoast motion picture co opened next to the theater,I boght so many films and anime VHS and DVD from them. Good times. Now I have no reason to visit. Amazingly the theater was still in operation until March 2020 when COVID shut it down.

I remember when that Mall was bustling back in the early seventies. My brother and I would go to the United Artist theater 🎭 go watch a sinbad movie 🍿 or whatever was playing while our folks were shopping 🛍️. It wass really a great site to see and go in then so new and so nice 😊definitely the best they had to offer during that time. Weinstocks had a very nice high class restaurant my mother worked there. It’s really shocking to see now 😮 what it is left just a shell 🐚 of what was once a big time mall. 😢

Wow, the algorithm came through with this one! Definitely spent some time there as a kid. You should walk the Bayshore Mall in Eureka, it's totally zombified (along with the people in it). The most lively 'store' in it is the DMV. I don't think it's all that vintage though, they built it in the 90s.

I remember being brought here as a child, down from the hills high above. It was a magical place full of the stuff you see on tv. It was huge and scary. There was a fountain in the courtyard that granted many a wish. The last time I recall going to the sunrise was for my 8th grade graduation. I needed a suite and was sent on my way in fine norcal fashion.

Spent many quarters in Aladdin’s Castle Arcade that was down that far end hallway near JC as well. Watched Beauty and the Beast at the old cinemas now long gone near where the Bon Ton is. K Street mall is now the arena for the Kings Town and Country made a comeback with Winco and Planet Fitness, along with Cosco across the street Florin Mall is pretty much shuttered except for Walmart but there used to be alot of gang activity down there (still is but it’s calmed down) and Sears is kind of hanging on like the little engine that could. The only ones really still standing without needing some major changes are Arden Fair Mall and Roseville. Not sure what they did different but they’re always busy, especially on the weekends and during Christmas.

You forgot about Gottschalks, I think they were the 1st to go under. Only about 1/2 if that of the mall is being used now. Back in the day, that was the only mall to go to without going all the way down to Sacramento. Last time I was in there, about 5 years ago. I was doing a job to repair the phone lines for the alarms in the old Sears portion after thieves had broke in and ripped them all out. Kinda eerie going into a dark vacant building and into the basement.

When I was a kid I loved going to the Sunrise mall! It was like a whole other world. The hustle and bustle made it feel so alive. I loved the big fountain they had in the middle. Where you would beg your parents for change so you could throw it in to make wishes and at the same time dream about all the things you could buy in the mall if you had all the change from the fountain lol. Then in my teen years in the 80's it was the hang out spot during the day on the weekends. My friends and I would ride the bus from North Highlands to the mall and spend hours there. Saturday night was spent at Birdcage Walk. Going to the movies, walking around the closed stores, watching the cruise (before they shut it down permanently) flirting with the cute boys lol and when we were seniors in high school we would go to the midnight movies there. It hurts my heart to even drive by there seeing hardly any cars in the parking lot. I don't remember the last time I went in there, but it broke my heart. More stores closed than open, hardly anyone there. The hustle and bustle was gone. It has been gasping for breath for years now. Just an almost empty shell of its former self. 😢😢😢😢😢

I worked at Mann Theatres there from 1977 to 1980. I loved that mall. I remember most all the stores there. There was a Curtis Mathis TV store ( kids will have to look that up ). Next to that the owner of Model Dairy owned a coffee store. It served fancy coffee roasts, espressos, lattes etc. You could buy the coffee beans and teas. Also coffee and tea making equipment you couldn't find any where else. This was way before Starbucks. Then there was a tee shirt store where you picked a design to be heat applied to your shirt. Next to that was Round Table pizza. There were clothiers 'In Good Company', 'Saturday in San Francisco' and an expensive store upstairs that I think was Stefano Ricci. There was Grey Reid department store. A Stride Right shoe store. Ince Jewelers, a leather goods store, a hair salon. French themed Cafe Marjay in the center that had the best chicken crepes. Same owners with a reverse take on their two combined names owned Jaymar draperies. There were short lived tenants too. Like the steak house restaurant upstairs next to Grey Reid. It was good. But that mall was a hard one to get foot traffic into. For a while there was a soft pretzel stand gazebo in the front entry area. There was even a nightclub disco, The Magic Factor. And of course there was Raley's. I loved going to that Raley's. The mall was in a part of town that I liked. Also when I worked there, across the street where The Atlantis Casino parking lot is now, was the Governor Sparks Mansion. It was still there on it's rural ranch property with all the out buildings. It was in disrepair but still was something to look at. I thought it was so cool. Felt like looking at Reno's old west past. They moved it during this time to South 395. I hope the Old Town Mall doesn't get torn down. It really was a unique mall. I have great memories of spending time in my younger years there.
